Peeking in to say hi

Dreamer you have very glamorous butt. And look at that cute little Appy butt.

My fave Vet got to meet my horsey boys yesterday. We did vaccs and coggins. He said that Tonto's eyes lack pigment and they will always be a weepy mess. He said to keep them clean and to watch for small cell carcinomas which agrees with what my other equine vet said.

Tia, I got pics of my guys eyes. Tonto's isn't a very clear pic but you get the idea.

I see how Tonto's could be bothering him..the pink part (skin) for lack of a better term, at the corner of his eye, is becoming more visible on Sundance...did that make any sense at all?  Jet's eye looks fine.  Does he have problems too?  I don't remember if you told me that or not. Please forgive me!

Here's Sundance's eye before the drama started.  But! I figured out the problem.  He was poking himself when given the round bale. He buries his head into it and that's what was causing the problem.  I bought a (very expensive) guard mask (like a fly mask)this past summer and he wears it 24/7 when they are feeding off the round from now on.  His eye cleared back up and he is holding it wide open again...I am going to get the eye checked, but the urgency has diminished, so I will hold off til my week off (in 3 weeks)...since I will be trailering him to the hospital.

Tia, I was wondering if there was any news on Sundance's eye?
    • Gold Top Dog
No new news. (No news is good news!)  His eye is still fine but I haven't gotten him in to be checked yet. [sm=uhoh.gif]   I'm battling mud fever/scratches on him at the moment (it's much improved),  the rain we've had lately has been endless!  I'm gonna put in an all weather paddock next year.  I don't want to go through another muddy season! As soon as I get him in to see the specialist, I'll post it.

Tia, Something I found that helps with the mud fever. I buy generic listerine type mouthwash and keep it in a spray bottle. I spray ankles/heels and fetlocks before, during and after rains. Keeps my guys from having outbreaks. I heard some people use hydrogen peroxide? Good thoughts sent for SunD's eye.

Funny you mentioned that!  I did that just the other day.  I mixed it with water though...I didn't know if full strength would sting or not??
I've spritzed them a few times now.
I've also used batadine scrub, desitin cream, gold bond powder (when he's dry) it's only his heels. It hasn't migrated up on the fetlocks (knock on wood)  and I'm doing my best to keep it that way!

Does the listerine work for you?

    • Gold Top Dog
Yes it seems to work. I use to dilute it but don't anymore. My hubby who is an avid real listerine user says the generic stuff is already diluted compared to the brand name stuff. It seems to prevent and when I had forgotten to spray, Tonto got a little scab on his heel it cleared it up quick. It didn't seem to sting him either.

Thank God for snow...no more mud fever and their feet are nice and clean.  I like the listerine treatments.  I'm taking Sundance in to the specialist Friday morning.  His eye started running again.  Keep him in your thoughts.  I'm so worried for him first and foremost.  Second, I'm worried for my pocketbook! [:o]

Happy Holidays Tia, I'm glad your mud fever is gone. I'm sorry that it takes snow to get rid of it though. The listerine seems to be a cheap, easy fix. I use Fungasol if any scabs do get started. But haven't had any since starting the listerine. The Fungasol works good on all the other bites, scrapes and assorted owies too. We are usually pretty dry here but when it rains it is mud city. We need rain now. I will be sending up prayers on Friday for SunD's eye. (and your pocketbook)

What a relief!!  Ulcerated cornea with edema surrounding the ulcer and a single arborizing ventral blood vessel. (say that 4 times fast) is what's going on and she sees no reason the eye should come out.  Apparently he's doing a great job at healing this thing on his own hence the surfacing blood vessel.  We're going to treat the ulcer with the Trip antibiotic ointment and Itraconazole/DMSO suspension.
He is to wear his guardian mask at all times or most of the time to protect from further injury, but other than that, he's going to do fine and keep his eye as long as there's no discomfort.

I'm SO relieved!  I was able to get him on a scale and um, lets just say he's got plenty of stuffing to keep him warm this winter!  Yikes.  He's about 54"  14.1HH or something like that and he weighed in at 980.  That's alot isn't it?  He gets little (handful) to no grain and gets 4-5 flakes of hay per day.  Gives new meaning to the term "easy keeper"  I guess.

I'm so happy for Sunny that it's not serious.  The dr. says his other eye is perfectly fine.
