    "Bloat" in humans?

My mom took my dad to the ER last night and this morning when I talked to her she said that they told her his intestines had flipped.  I said that sounds like bloat that dogs get and she agreed as if she had heard of it before.  I have been searching on the internet and since these aren't medical terms I am having a hard time finding info about it in humans.  I know it is VERY serious in dogs.  My mom said he will have surgery but and they will put a tube through his nose and I guess further down I think she said, that will help straighten it out.  The only other term she mentioned was his colon which I think is the large intestine maybe.  He had symptoms of indigestion and bad gas like pains.

Does anyone know anything about this or a better medical term to look up for it?  I just want to get some info about what is going on.  I am really worried.

This has happenend to my hubby 4 times, it is very scary and very very painful, the NG (nasal gastric) tube is inserted w/the hopes that the intestines will untwist themselves around the tube, and all 4 times w/ Joe it did, thank God, if it doesn't  it's because there is an obstruction and then they need  to do emergency surgery. He has to for the rest of his life not eat any vegetable that is  not cooked well, and same w/ beans. I will say a prayer for him. And hope he doesn't need surgery.

Thank you so much for the response and the link.  They are putting the tube in so that is  probably the same thing.  At least now I have some idea what this might be.  Thank you!

She also said that he will have surgery.  They think it was caused by scar tissue from an old surgery.  He also has a hernia that needs to be taken care of.

I've had colic, which isn't the same as a torsion, but when the duodenal valve decides to close and won't open, resulting in trapped gas in the stomach. Extremely painful. And caused mostly by stress, I must mention.

Stomach and intestinal torsions happen in dairy cows, too. They try to pack them into too closely together and they get stressed and their stomachs or intestines flip. In cows, years ago, they'd sew the stomach to the side of cow it was supposed to be on. (I kept sneaking into vet classes when I went to UC Davis.)

That sounds scary and painful.  We'll keep fingers and paws crossed for your dad.  BTW. my sisters name is Bonnie Jeanne.

OT - Jean, when you were at UCD did you ever go see that cow that they used to drag out for every picnic day?  The one with the big hole (and a window) in her side so people could look in and see the workings of her stomach? I thought that was totally gross and they finally quit putting that on display.

Coming from the Queen of Intestinal Issues, that sounds beyond uncomfortable. I hope everything works out, and he feels better soon.

Yes! And I saw a cow, perhaps it was the Window Cow, who had had the stomach sewn to the side of it's body. I remember the plastic cover they put on the Window Cow's hole when she wasn't on display....[8|]

    B. Jean, I'm sending lots of healing energy toward your Dad! Hope he's better soon!

Thanks for all the good thoughts.  They ended up taking him into surgery yesterday afternoon b/c they thought if they waited there would be more damage than if they did it right away.  Basically some scar tissue from a surgery when he was a child had caused his intestines to be blocked and since the onset of the symptoms were so sudden they thought it needed to be taken care of right away.  His intestine had flipped.  The doctor milked everything back into his stomache and drained it.  He unflipped hte intestine which was VERY distended.  The only cut he made was to his skin to get in to take care of the problem.  If he had waited much longer he would have started leaking into his body which would have been really bad and could have even had a hole form.  He leaked a little but the Dr didn't seem as worried about that.

Anyway, he is on the road to recovery now.  I am glad the docotor took a very aggressive approach and now we know what was wrong and that it has been taken care of.  He said this is actually very common and even more common in women then men since women have more surgeries in their abdominal area that create scar tissue.  I am just glad it is over with and he can start feeling better soon.  He will be in the hospital for 5-7 days depending on how fast he progresses.

Thanks again for the support and all the good vibes.  This is a Father's Day I will never forget!

My dad had to have this surgery as well and he actually had post-op complications (infection) that required me to fly home from Germany (my ex was Air Force and we were stationed there).  He was very sick but it turned around and he was fine.  He'd had some other bowel problems prior to the surgery and afterwards he never had those again and was pretty happy about that.  I hope your dad continues to improve each day and can come home soon.
