    The Truth About Canada.

I do not live in an igloo, but I do own sled dogs.  I am the minority.  Mosquitos are not our national bird but whatever is, is hiding from them.  A moose is about the size of a big horse, not to be messed with.  They are mean.  A bull moose once rolled a Festiva right in front of me.  By the way, do not honk at them, apparently they don't like that.  A guy I knew(cheesehead) asked me once if West Edmonton Mall was in Toronto... uhh.  Nope that would be in Edmonton... West Edmonton to be precise.  Same guy's dad told him they could not come up her to visit in the winter because we don't plow the roads.  Now that would make us pretty secluded, because apparently we have 10 months of winter and 2 months of bad skiing.  Its gonna be a balmy 25 degrees outside, but thats Celsius so about 77 F.  And if you want to talk about size, if you were to drive across my province which is Ontario, it would take you two days at least.  Three if you stopped to sleep.  It also takes me 3 days to get to BC from where I live.  And for any British Columbians out there, as well as Americans, No I do not know your buddy Mike in Toronto!  There are Millions of People in my part of the world, I don't even know all the Mikes in Thunder Bay!

Oh Oh! Huskymom! Is it true that all dogs in Canada like Timbits?
    • Gold Top Dog
    Everybody Likes Timbits!
    • Gold Top Dog
So it is true. I thought so, but I didn't want to assume anything.
    • Gold Top Dog
Oh god, timbits.  I miss timbits....and swiss chalet sauce......and ketchup flavour potato chips......I need to think about something else.

Born and raised in NH, but have moved all over the country, and the folks in Texas seemed the most.... disconnected from the rest of the US.  When they say Texas is a whole other country, I think they mean it!  (no offense)

    Example:
Texas native asks "Where y'all from?"
Answer "From New England" (don't want to confuse them by mentioning any specific state... because everyone thinks New England is a state, anyway...[sm=smack.gif]).
Response from Texas native "Oh!  Is that near Houston?"
    [8|]  um, no...
Oh, and after this conversation with an explanation of where New England is, my mom was forever referred to as "That Yankee Lady"...!

Also, there is a big difference in accents from NH to MA to Maine. I don't "paahhk my caahh" and I don't say "ayuh" at the end of every sentence.

I loved southern New Jersey!  Spring doesn't bloom any better than there!  But if one more person said "yous guys" to me, I'd want to rip their tongues out!

What I want is to try an authentic english pastie.

Aren't pasties those things strippers wear?

Seriously, I see them advertised around here during deer season and am still not sure what they really are.

Most people think it never gets hot in Michigan.  And that every man who lives in the state hunts deer.  Oh, and the U.P. is another state!

Being a native Michegander I have funny, rural relatives up there, yah know, Yoopers.... Gosh, since they have achieved statehood I hope Alaska and New Mexico can do the same soon!

I left Michigan when I was 8. The joke I keep running into up here is that almost everyone is from Michigan in one way or another. [:D] Michigan folks do pretty well in Alaska.

Candace, I hear you! Ten-four good buddy on ALL your points!! I'm always being asked if I know "Jan" in wherever, usually Anchorage, 350 miles away...

I know that's not true, but i'm from PA, so it is my duty to make fun of NJ!

That's OK, we make fun of PA!  LOL  Our oldest son and his family live near Pocono Raceway.  Talk about stepping back in time!  It's just like going up to where I grew up in NY State.

Pasties are a meat pie.  I make them with a basic pie crust and fill that with a combination of ground chuck roast...and I do grind it myself, ground pork, shredded taters, carrots and rutabegas (I think that's the round white thing with a bit of purple that they wax?), minced onions, lots of onions, and salt and pepper.  That all gets wrapped up in the pie crust and baked and it is GOOOOOOD.  My recipe came from my sisters MIL who was Finnish and lived her entire life in the UP. so not real sure if it's a Finnish recipe or a UP one.  Oh, and before you seal it up, you put a couple pats of butter on top of the meat mixture.

Now some make them with a combination of meat, veggies and cream cheese, and those are NOT as good.

Yeah, every man in MI has a deer head mounted in his livingroom, and by golly they sneak out and pooch off season.  An heavens no it NEVER gets hot in MI...that's why it's 90 here today....
    • Gold Top Dog
Not sure if those are rutabegas or turnips you described.  At any rate, the recipe you use, Glenda, sounds yummy!  A real stick-to-your-ribs winter dish!

    Okay, now I'm gettin' hungry.

I always get the two confused...and each and every time I buy them I promise myself I'll remember which it is, and I never fail to forget!
