    Continental Kennel Club

Does anyone know about the Continental Kennel Club registry?  I've heard people speak very negatively about it and have said that the AKC is the way to go.  Does anyone know why this is the case?  Should someone not get a puppy because the kennel does Continental instead of AKC registry?

As I understand it, they'll register just about anything, purebred or not.

And yes, AKC does register puppy mill pups, but they also do have a tiny enforcement arm and WILL check out at least some of the millers and they HAVE withheld registration in some cases.  They are basically just a registry, but at least with AKC you can find a history of the pup and his parents and their parents back for many generations.  Not so with CKC.....

And also, I think that their name was chosen to intentionally confuse people and make them think they were getting a dog registered with the real CKC (Canadian Kennel Club).

Yes, I agree Kelly....I think that the more they can confuse the average Joe or Joesette, the further ahead they are...after all the dog comes from registered parents and too many folks don't realize the difference.

Well, what about championships and pedigrees?  Do their championships mean nothing?  Just want to learn as much as I can.  Thanks.

I wouldn't hold a CKC championship as highly as an AKC one.  I think though that some breeds, and I'm thinking the pittie breeds are divided by "groups" and AKC won't register one or the other....but I could be wrong on that.  I know Jaime was at Westminster LAST year, so clearly her "group" is AKC so I'm thinking that the other one isn't.  In a rare instance like that, ok, but you'd really HAVE to know the breeds to make a determination as to which is an acceptable breed to be UKC registered.

Well, when you go on the CKC website, and do a search for "breeds and breeders"; all the breeders sell multiple dog breeds- which screams puppy mill right there. I typed in "Shih Tzu" and had breeders who sold Tzus, Lhasas, Poodles, Schnauzers AND Chihuahuas.
The big dogs too- Goldens and Labs are sold with Shepherds and Westies.

When I adopted Daisy, before we had her spayed, I got a suspicious email from somebody claiming to be a CKC affiliate who said that if I didn't spay her (and break the shelter/city rules and regulations about Speuter your dog XYZ days after adopting from a shelter) I could register her with a registery- especially if I didn't know her parents or where she came from. (this is the dog that I'm not even sure is pure-bred though! ) "For absolutely free!!" What creeps me out even more is how somebody got my email address and knew that I recently adopted a dog.

Nothing in life is free I've learned...[8|]

Obviously I knew that this person was either A) a spammer or B) trying to pull my leg so I obviously didn't reply and put it in the spam folder.

So it is THAT easy to register a dog, something has to be off...

ok i dont mean to hijack this the thread but i also have a question my boxer pup that i am getting is  CKC  and AKC   bad or good?

Well that all depends.  Personally, if I were going to buy a dog, I would want AKC, just because with them you can go back and research the dog's pedigree.  Now I have Shane who is AKC and I haven't registered him.  Probably won't.  I am not going to breed him so why spend the money.  I also have 9 beagles and none of them are registered.  They are our hunting pack, actually all but 3 have been rescued as strays or adopted.  So I don't have papers to even register them.  IF we go to have another litter those pups won't leave our care.  We maintain the pack for us and us alone.  Not for profit. Therefore why register them?  I do know that if I wanted papers I could take pics of my dogs and mail them to the Cont. KC and have them registered.  Which I think is a joke.  Thats way to easy to falsify papers in my opinion. Ok I am off my soap box now...hehe

A friend of mine has an African Grey Parrot, who is a CKC registered Dachshund. She wanted to see if she could.

The CKC is a joke. They'll register anything.

The Canadian Kennel Club is fine. The Continental Kennel Club is a seller of fancy papers.

I always tell anyone who asks, that if I could teach my cats to bark, I could register them with the CKC!

The UKC is a legitimate registry as well. Their standards are a bit different (my breed is an Am Staff with the AKC, it would be a Pit with the UKC), but they are fine.  The CANADIAN KC is great as well!

I bet you could register them anyways. You should try it, LOL.

When we were breeding our contract stated that buyers did need to AKC register the pups.  I want to be able to track my animals, simple as that.  And if someone LIED and didn't spueter, I wanna be able to track that too.
