My grandmother, an old Okie, never once lit a fire or did laundry.  She started a "fahr" and did the "warsh."  [;)]

    same as mine lol
my grandad was from West VA... he didnt say Boat.. he said Boot.. and other things like that,,, mouth was pronounced something like mooth.. my FIL is from the same area and has a similar accent, but not quite as extreme. he says warsh all the time lol

oh and one mispronunciation of words... is wallago.... even when i was a kid i had trouble figuring out what the heck a wallago was....  until i met someone from out of state that annunciated it... a WHILE a go.... [8|] then i started preaching to everyone who couldnt say it right that they were confusing the nations children with their bad grammar..

i am a little less tolerant on bad spelling.. you cant really help having an accent.. and if you grew up kinda sheltered then you tend to pronounce things the same way as those around you...

My mother says "nuke-U-lar" and everytime she does it, my brother and I jump all over her case.

Being from California, I think I speak fairly normally and without an accent, although I have picked up a few South Texas colloquialisms in the 10 years I have lived here.

Unfortunately, I say "poke" instead of "Polk" (like the president), but its more because that "olk" sound is very hard for me to make. For some reason or another I also say "arnge" instead of "orange" and "harrible" instead of "horrible." These are all the same things my mom says wrong as well (but I do say nuclear correctly) so I probably got it from her!

At least I don't say "wuff" instead of "wolf" and "guff" instead of "golf." My mom's from Baton Rouge so that explains that!

NO mispronounciaton of any word by any person...nor accent or dialect bothers me NEARLY as badly as people who say "you know" 15 times in every sentence...or "like"!

I am very glad I cut all those extragrammatical words out of my everyday speech. I used to interject "like" and "you know" a lot when I was younger, but since going to college I have stopped that bad habit. However... I think they have been replaced with "Well..." at the beginning of sentences and "um" anytime I can't think of what to say!

I love american accents and the regional differences. People from NZ sound mostly the same (with the exception people from the far south who are known to roll their r's, a la American english). One thing that really grinds my gears over here is when people say off as "orf. There is no r in off!
I would like to think I speak proper English, but the few times I've been in the US, my speech is met by a combination of confusion and amusement (though mostly confusion)- I guess Americans aren't so fluent in Kiwi! [:D]

lol in the 70's (before the Valley Girl films) Uhhh, and Yanno were more popular than Like and Um.. or so i am told.
i tend to say "Dude" a lot.... i cant help it.. i dont really use Like... i used to because thats just how every one talked in my school and you couldnt help but copy... it still slips in there every now and then.. and of course my husband's favourite is when i say  "hmm" as a responce. sometimes "hmph" depending on mood or how much i care.. rude, yes i know, but i had the communication skills of a wolverine when i first met him.... AH HA!
I KNEW that when I pronounced the "h" in the word "herb" for the first 18 years of my life, I was CORRECT IN DOING SO.

When I was 18, an ex-boyfriend's sister laughed her butt off at me when I said herb and not 'erb.
Made me feel like a COMPLETE idiot thinking I had been mispronouncing the word my entire life.
BUT I WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG.

I got made fun of too, for pronouncing the "h".

I took a phone call from a lady the other day.  Her accent sounded Aussie but different, so I had to ask "are you from down under?"  She told me yes and that I had to guess from either New Zealand or Austrailia.  I knew the accent was just a tad different than the Aussie one and said so, told her that she was probably from NZ.  I was right and she was impressed that I figured out the Kiwi accent!

For whatever reason I know many people that say " wind shield " vs "wind chill"

Kudos to you, Ed for being able to tell the difference! [:)]  Most people seem to have difficulty distinguishing Australian, NZ and English accents, though to me they sound very different!

i know the difference between Scottish, Irish, English and Australian... South African is.. erm.. unique too.. i know it when i hear it.
but i dont know if i could tell NZ from OZ. i have met MANY people from over there... online. never have talked to them in person.. just Scottish, Irish and English folks.
the OZ accents i know best are Paul Hogan's Steve Irwins lol
