If I were you folks with the ciggy bums I might take to carrying a jelly jar about with me....on it I'd place 'Cigarrette Replacement Fund' and ask that they donate any loose change upon their person before they received their ciggy...lol. I bet they'd stop asking pretty quick!

And that really does work! I don't have problems with friends so much, none of them are closet smokers, and ones who do smoke buy their own. But people on the street see me smoking, first thing they ask, "Hey, wanna bum me a smoke?" so I say, "got a dollar?" they usually go, well ... noo.. then walk away. Usually I'm pretty nice and give them one if they do give me a dollar, but it doesnt happen that often.

Take it from a non-smoker, if you've smoked within your past 2 showers and clothing changes, people can tell.

ditto. i dont know who closet smokers think they are fooling... themselves?

i like the saying that "Having a non smoking section in a restaurant is like having a no peeing section a pool"
i have almost no sense of smell, by the way, so smoking really doesnt bother me unless its so thick you cant see fine detail across the room.. then my sinuses lock up, my head aches, eyes water.. etc... THATS when i dont like smoking.

they banned smoking in restaurants in Florida in late 2003. for the first half of the year my husband and i would go out to eat a LOT. he always ate faster than i did, so he would smoke while i finished eating.. didnt really bother me much... but when they banned it and he had to go outside to smoke i was PISSED because there i was.. all alone.... no one to talk to anymore.... and there he was... outside in the rain/heat.. having a BLAST talking to all kinds of people! [:@]
just a different view point for you guys lol

banning smoking in a bar is just plum dum ridiculous - as a cowgirl once said to me - ... these people are alcoholics, depressed, sleeping around!! but do NOT smoke around them because you'll endanger their health... pfft! yeah right!

Yeah, but not all bars are like that. Most of the places I go are people hanging out, watching a band, or having some pub food and drinks. Not everyone goes to a bar to get blitzed, laid or to drink their sorrows away. (Although I think many country musicians would like us to believe that they do. lol! [;)])

I'd have to side with DumDog here...,lol clubs/bars are a place of vice...period. I like them that way, too! LOL...but again...off topic to remenisce on my younger wilder days...*wistful sigh*

But Ark lol they've banned the smoking in public. i bet if they hadnt done that everyone would be lit up and puffing on a Winston or Pallmall while watching the band [;)] lmao!

know what i hate? people assuming that I'M going to turn into a smoker because i live with one..... dont think it hasnt crossed my mind to swipe a ciggie and take a drag because... being the perfect child that i was... i never did get to give smoking a try lol but i have this inner voice shouting at me to NOT prove my family right... no matter how much i want to try it.. i think they did that on purpose too. they know me better than i give them credit for.

I too have the nasty habit of smoking. Cigarettes went up another dollar in my state so I now make my own. Bought a injector, tubes, tobacco. I find that I don`t smoke as much as I have to make each one.

When I`m at auction sales and people see that you have cigarettes they use to come over and ask if they could bum a cigarette from you. Now that cigarettes have gone up in price they ask if they can buy a cigarette from you. Its usually 25 cents that they offer you.

maybe i should get something like that for my husband... he's a nervous smoker.. for the most part he wont finish a whole pack in a day. but there are times when i've been outside gardening or doing something with the dogs and i'll see him come stomping out of the house, talking on the phone, reaching for the ciggies and zippo... my thoughts are "He's either talking to his ex, or his mom..."
when i first met him the deal was, when i moved in, that he needed someone to b*tch at him for smoking, so he could quit... it started out ok. he stopped smoking inside the house and in the car.. but as we got to um.. "know" each other better... he revoked my license to b*tch.... [8|]

You mean aside from the restaurants and bars and stuff? People can still walk down the street and smoke... to me that is a public place. So as far as I'm concered they still have plenty of freedom! But I really do feel as though "enclosed" public places especially should be banned from smoking (i.e. buildings, etc.) But that is my opinion! [:)]

i agree. i love to go out to eat. i dont mind my husband smoking or others smoking around me.... but i get snarky when smokers flood the place while kids are around. i knew quite a few adults while i was growing up that would drive around with the windows rolled up in the car, with kids inside, and still smoke. i guess they thought it was safe as long as the AC was running [8|]

i should also add that... i really wish smoking would stop completely... no slight against smokers really, but its a chemical addiction that alters the personality on some and if you dont have it you get angry - forget the dangers of cancer  and air pollution - i'm not saying ban it, but it would be nice if it was a group decision for all to quit willingly.
i'm particularly anal about smokers around my home because of a crime show i saw when i was really young.
someones kid either died or was deathly ill, cant remember, and no one knew why.. turned out the baby was chewing on cigarettes butts when no one was looking and had been poisoned by the nicotine. i dont know if thats possible or not, seems like it is.. but i reamed my husband out one day because he accidentally dropped a butt and my son grabbed it and was about to stick it in his mouth. when i saw what he had in his hands the memories of that show came back and i freaked..

To the OP, the only time I attempted to hide the fact that I smoke is when I was looking for a job.  Right before the interview I would use mouth wash, brush my teeth, soap and water, and a change of clothes.  Little did I know that I should have done this 2 days ago and then not have a cigarette.  No wonder I was passed up so many times.

Another little interesting story about cigarettes and job interview.  I went on an interview with the GAO in Washington DC.  Before entering the government building you had to go through a metal detecter scan.  I kept failing because of the pack of cigarettes in my pocket.  Cigarettes contain metal.  Everyone knew I smoked.

I don't smoke, but I feel that smokers shouldn't have their rights taken away.......no smoking in bars is utterly ridiculous.......
A smoke free work environment is a good idea, but, IMO, the smokers should have a place within a building to go to that doesn't take most of their lunch time to get to.

I am almost a reformed smoker.  I still have about 2 or 3 per day, but it's a couple puffs at a time before I get too dizzy to continue.  Chatix does work.  However, they still SMELL wonderful and I crack people up at work when they are outside smoking and I take their hand and sniff their cigs!  They think that's hysterical, but gosh darn it, keeps me from lighting up!  Although...I DID almost light a breadstick earlier in the week........was using it as a cig substitute, tooling down the road, forgot that I don't smoke anymore and flicked the bic.....oppps.

Yay - congratulations Glenda!  My friend is trying to quit but the Dr. gave her Wellbutrin and it's not doing the trick.  I'll have to tell her what you said.  Good for you!!!
