    home phone?

have any of you given up the home phone and now just rely on cell phones?

what are the pros and cons of giving up a home phone?

do you get telemarketing calls on your cell phone now?

my wife and i are thinking of getting rid of our home phone and going totally cell phone. i am just trying to figure out the pros and cons. our home phone bill is rather large and it would be nice to give it up and save that money each month.

    thanks.

My fiance and I only have cellphones.  I like it, and would see no real purpose to getting a land line.  We don't get calls from telemarketers.  The only thing that's kind of annoying is remembering to keep them charged all the time.

I have done without a home phone before.  It wasn't that big of a deal.  Now I have a very basic home phone package because I rely so heavily on my cell.  I don't recieve telemarketing calls on my cell.

did you guys give out your cell number as a home phone number to say your credit card companies, cable providers, or similar entities?

I know people who only have cell phones and hand out the cell numbers as their primary contact, I, on the other hand can't do it.....my signal here at the house blows big time......also, my DSL and fax line is with our local phone company......

dsl may be another issue. right now we have dsl, but if we do away with home phones do we have to get rid of it too?

we can get cable internet so broadband is still doable. i actually looked at the cable internet pricing the other day, and we may switch to it whether we keep the home phone or not. their prices looked way better than our dsl.

I wouldn't...I need the 911 and tracing cells takes time I wouldn't want spent, if for some reason one of my kiddos needed to call for help and didn't know their address or were too scared to give it.

You have to have a line for DSL, but when we did away with the home phones and threatened to switch to cable internet (which we eventually did anyway) the telephone company offered us a low use plan. It allowed for something like 5 incoming & 5 outgoing calls, separate from internet use, and it was like $10 month which was mostly taxes and fees.

I haven't had a land line since cell plans became completely affordable - maybe 7-8 years. I've learned, in that time, which places are 'safe' to give my number to and which aren't, so I no longer get any telemarketing calls, but at one time I did get a lot. They're pretty good about taking you off the list if you tell them it's a cell - much better than they ever were with my home phone.

i'm not in the states but i don't have a home phone line. the reason though is rather sefish:
my mother still pays my cell phone bills, cause everybody's cell in our family is registered to the same company. when i have a home phone i pay it myself. plus i hate dialing numbers...

Before I got married I gave up my home phone and only used my cell.  I only had a land line for my dial-up (GASP!) internet access...and the line charge was something like $12/month.  Anyway, this worked out just fine for me. I have never received a solicitor phone call on my cell phone.

Now that DH and I are married, we signed up for the Comcast package which includes their VOIP, cable, and internet, plus we have our cell phones.

i just got off the phone with bellsouth. sooner is right... the guy i talked to said that some areas offer stand alone dsl, but our's isnt one of them.

one of my coworkers has a plan similar to this. so i may call the phone co and push for that.

we arent really too worried about emergency calls since we dont have any kids and our cells are almost always within reach.

i am gonna call the cable co in a minute and see what they will offer us.

We are (hopefully) moving in a couple of weeks and we've been considering dropping the land line.  Here are the things that I've put on my "con" list: I don't wear my cellphone and can't hear it ringing unless it's in the same room, so I miss a lot of cell calls when I'm home. I work from home and I always have the people I work for call me on the land line.  If my cell phone is the only number, then I'll be getting work related calls when I'm out of the house, which I don't particularly want, and I hate to use up my minutes on work calls. I just got a new cell phone and I don't know if it has the same problem as my old one did, but my old one got pretty hot during long conversations (15 minutes or more).   Right now, the amount of free minutes is just about right for dh and I.  But if we go strictly cell, we may have to up the minutes, which will cut into the savings from dropping the land line. All in all though - we are leaning pretty heavily towards dropping the land line.

minimom.... i was searching around and looking at communication options... i found some places that offer a local or tollfree number that is basically a voicemail box, but you can have it forwarded to a live phone number during certain hours if you wish. so you could set it up as a business phone number and have it forward to your cell during your business hours and just take messages any other time.

i thought about doing it as a number to give out as a home number so i could just screen out the telemarketers.

here are the two i looked at....

    [linkhttp://www.evoice.com/evoice/twa/page/homePage]http://www.evoice.com/evoice/twa/page/homePage[/link]

the first one offers toll free numbers, but i am not sure if the second does or not.

    edit:
my old one got pretty hot during long conversations

mine does too. you might want to consider getting a "hands free" device.

I haven't had a land line phone in years. I have to tell you that it's like a dream come true - no more dealing with the crappy customer service of the phone company - no more telemarketers - and you take it every where with you rather than it being tied to your house.

I have learned over the years who to give my phone number to. I admit that I sometimes still give out my old land line number if I don't trust a company - just to appease them. [;)]

We've got this comcast package. And when our contract is up in a month, the ONLY part we're going to keep is the internet. We HATE the cable and we HATE the phone with them. We mainly hate it because if one goes out, ALL THREE go out. And it can go out for HOURS. No phone, no tv, and no internet access. That sucks.

Plus, I want more movie channels and the National Geographic channel back.
