I was going to ask if your DH can see if the condenser fan is blowing. It looks like a radiatior fan and it blows the hot air from the condenser coils out and away from the unit. When it's off, you can check to make sure that it rotates freely and easily. If not, it will eventually bind up and quit working. Also, on the hottest days, you might run the sprinkler low but aimed to wear it will hit the outside of the coils and help evaporate some of the heat.

Hey, I feel your pain. A couple of months ago, we had a $250 electric bill, which should be impossible considering we practically live in the dark. Our AC was running non-stop and obviously wasn't cooling off the house. So it's getting replaced tomorrow, finally. Hopefully, that will get rid of such a high bill, although spending $2000 plus on an AC isn't exactly what I planned on doing to correct the situation.

The best part about the whole thing was when the AC guy, my dad's friend, read the pressure of the unit and said that the outside compressor was so unstable that it could explode. The good news was that it wouldn't hurt us if we were inside. The bad news was that it would take out my living room wall. LOL Fun times!

Blah!  Mine has been out since Monday night.  And it is a 3 phase and blew 3 fuses so I had the A/C people Tuesday, the electrician Wednesday and then the A/C people again today.  They are replacing the compressor.  And fortunately our home warranty is paying for all but $350 of it!  Now, if I can just get them out here to install it tomorrow so I don't have to live this way through the weekend.

I broke down last night and went to Home Depot and bought the smallest cheapest window unit I could find for the living room where we spend the most time especially since I have been working from home all week waiting on repair men.  For $70, it has made the living room so much more bearable and I have fans running everywhere else.  It is still 89 in the rest of my house and cooler outside.

I would get the A/C serviced and looked at now before it goes out completely.  Might be worth it since Texas humid 100 degree heat is almost unbearable without A/C and it will for sure take a couple days to get repaired when it does go out.

Oh yeah he's coming tomorrow....because it's not blowing cold anymore...lol! We got maybe 10 minutes of cool air then back to lukewarm....*sigh*.

It sounds like the condenser fan is not blowing and taking the hot air away from the coils.

It was 90 in our apartment a few weeks ago (we are on the top floor) and our thermostat is located in the coolest part of the apartment.  Last summer, our college rental house was between 90-100 for over a week (was about 115 outside).  It was the hottest week of my life that I can remember, at least as far as indoor temps, humidity, and not ever having AC.

Dont cha just love summer? [;)]

That's what DH did last year when ours went out.  We put it in the bedroom and it made the room cool enough to live and sleep in.  It was worth every penny.

Is the condenser fan the thing outside? Cuz that's spinning fine.

    Yes.

Okay, then. If there's not a leak in the line sets ( low and high pressure lines runnong from that expensive compressor outside to the evaporator, another radiator coil thingy, in your central unit in the house) then the evaporator might be dirty. You can clean that with a spray bottle and a tooth brush. Or that expensive compressor could failing.

It's the story of my life too and I'm amazed we managed to get our repair in in time.  Usually we get the "well, if you'd brought the car in last week...." speech [8|]

Gina, fill a quart-sized Ziplock bag about 1/4 water and the rest ice.  It feels great on top of your head!!  The double-sealed freezer bags are best - aren't as likely to leak or to puncture from sharp pieces of ice.
