Ours went out last year when it was 100+ here and on a weekend.  It took 3 days to get it repaired.  Same as Shelly, it was our compressor.  So this year we noticed when it was super hot (95-100), it never shut off and wouldn't get below 82, so I had DH call them to come check it.  They were supposed to do that today and I'm hoping the found something to fix.   Our warranty runs out July 24th [8|]

My house is hot too.  The swamp cooler was leaking through the ceiling so I had to disconnect it.  I called for estimates on central air and they are running about $1000 over winter rates.  I gave up and bought a room air conditioner from Home Depot.  It's not great (big & loud) but it has lowered the temperature about 7 degrees.

I have AC but I haven't turned it on in so many years that I wouldn't know if it was working or not - or care. I am sitting under a ceiling fan, though. [:)]

Home now and DH said the AC technician checked it and said it was 1 1/2 lbs low on freon and apparently that's a significant amount.  He refilled it and said to call for a recheck in a couple months.  It's already cooler in here and I'm thrilled.  It does mean that the electric bill will be even higher than it would've been thru a heat wave, but such is life, right?

Joyce - how do you do it without using the AC?  You can't be much cooler than I am and there is no way I could sleep without it.  You are one tough lady [:)]

The attic fan goes on whenever the attic temp reaches 115 and on hot days I keep the ceiling fan over the bed running on high all day, so by the time I go to bed the room actually feels fairly cool.  Not sure how cool it's going to be if we have another one of those two-week heat waves with temps of 110 like we have for the past two summers. of course DH is proud that he got it working. He cleaned a bunch of "gunk" off some "coil"? Heck if I know...I am still thinking a visit from the a/c guy might not be a bad idea...but for now it's working. The house is cooling slowly...it's only EIGHTY EIGHT in here now. [&:]
