Now NO Links Allowed in Sigs?

I've been ordered to remove the links I had to my blog and to the story of Sofia and her sister Athena.

There are lots and lots of i-doggers with links in their posts. The Rule #10 was referred to. That rule originally asked us not to post links to other, competing sites. That I can see.

Now a sentence appears to have been added (because I can't see how I missed it) that NO links are allowed in sigs.

What do you think? I think it's going quite overboard.

I agree, Jean.  Waaay overboard.  It's not like you're selling anything so your links don't compete in any way with i-dog.  I'm sure I'm not the only one that enjoys reading your blog every now and then.

Ive never given much attention to siggy links, no matter what they were for.  I understand maybe banning the ones that lead to personal sales or benefit sites.... but blogs and photo sites... thats definately overboard.  [sm=2cents.gif]

I guess I have to remove mine too :-/  That stinks, since it's a link to the GSD Breed Betterment registry (Tracks health issues of the GSDs).

That seems a bit silly, but...what can you do?

I want to know how many other people have also been told they can't have links in their sigs.

Please post here if you have. If you have a link in your sig, and you have NOT received an order to remove it, I would also like to know.

    Thanks, folks.

I know that this seems unfair, but I believe it was in reaction to so darned many newbies coming along and slapping links in their sigs and then, when asked to remove them, saying that it isn't against the rules.  And of course, "everyone ELSE does it"

I'm sorry for folks like you Jean.  Lets give it some time please and see if there isn't a plan in the works for established members.

ETA:  From my understanding this is to be universal.  At least for now.  I know that we did discuss a plan for established members but I don't recall if it was adopted and if so, when it might happen.  Jean, I can absolutely promise you that you are not being singled out.  please trust me on that.

My mom would have said tough titty, Kitty, the warm milk's all gone. Point being, that all the established members followed rules and then, later, were allowed to post links in their sigs and certainly in profiles. Newbies are the ones who don't want to follow rules.

In my trade, when we get a greenhorn ("fresh meat") they are ditch diggers and gophers. And when they want to cry about that, we can always find them another ditch to dig. And gopher this and gopher that. Sorry, I don't have any hankerchiefs but I do have this shovel with the rubber grip that you can use. You hold on to this end and put the other end in the ground. No, there's no starter switch. It's a manual backhoe. Enjoy.

I once had a crew member who's family owned a large ranch in Mexico and he was used to being foreman in charge of the ranchhands. He didn't like it one bit when I would tell him what to do. But 30 seconds later, he would decide it's what he wanted to do, then do it.

So, newbies should get used to our rules and learn to like it. We did, when we were newbies.

Really?  Respectfully, when does one cross over from being a Newbie to an "established" member?  I see gripes all the time here about members having special privileges and I would not want to encourage a special standing.

I think this issue is important to those who have links and want to share more with members without taking up post space.  For me, I have no links.

i agree. i know some people have links to sites for charities, shelters, etc.
but rules are rules. it did seem unfair to me too, that some established members could get away with breaking them... not only for the signature rule..

i don't know.. maybe you could just add a little rule that members may apply for permission to have links in their sig.. i dunno.. it might be tough to manage. just brainstorming here..

I don't really care either way.

Personally, I'd prefer that we be allowed to have links to our own personal pages like blogs, catster, dogster, MySpace, whatever.  I don't know about you guys, but I'm a webaholic and I love looking at people's pages to learn more about them or see more pics of their dogs.  For example, I did look at Jeano's link to read the story about how she got Sofia.  At another board I frequent (which has over 45,000 members, so it's just as difficult if not way moreso to moderate), we are allowed to use personal links such as I've just mentioned, but not any links to commercial sites or any links soliciting for money, even if it's a relevant charity.

But I guess if ALL links are a big deal, fine, whatever.

PS.  Where can we read the official rules?

i guess it is just a matter of being able to control which are links are "good" and which are "bad".. it's probably kinda hard..

(ok, if that didnt make sense. ignore me. i'm basically sleep-typing..)

Jean, looks to me like rule 10 has been "added to" yes...it also is mentioned in the rules that they may change at any time without notice.

It also says no clickable links...which means if you would like to put an address you can...but it cannot be clickable...from what I read.

The place for links is in your profile IMO. I asked that MORE spaces there for "favorite links" be added...not sure if that's happened yet. IMO those that are curious about a member or want to know more about them should click thier profile. That's what we have them for.

I did not receive any instruction to remove my link but out of respect for the forum I did remove it
    • Gold Top Dog
Yes, but why am I the ONLY ONE who has been ordered to remove links? So far no one else has, as far as I know.
    • Gold Top Dog
janet....yes indeed it is very tedious and likely difficult to sift thru links one after another and judge whether they are competeing, for profit, unrelated to the forum, etc etc etc. That's on top of all the other stuff admin has to do unrelated to the forum...

I recently saw one (sig link) for CAR INSURANCE...lol.
