    My Turn -- Car Shopping

We are shopping for another car for my wife.  I deliberately did not say "new" because I haven't bought a brand new car since the early 1980's.  Buying new just does not make financial sense.  For example, one of the cars we looked at was a 2005 Pontiac GTO.  The car has 6200, yes, six thousand two hundred, miles on it and is priced at about $26,000.  When the car was brand new, it sold for about $34,000.  So, you've got a 2 year old car with very low miles that is worth $8,000 less than the original owner paid for it.  My philosophy is I will let someone else take that hit.  I can't afford to piddle away that kind of money.  Now, if you buy a brand new car and drive it until the wheels fall off, it may BEGIN to approach economic good sense, but even amortized over say, 10 years, why increase your expenses by $800 a year?  And so, I usually buy "program" cars.

Anyway, I wanted to get your folks input on the cars we are considering.  We have eliminated the '05 GTO from consideration because it is black.  I owned a black car once and swore I would never own another.  Black is beautiful, when it is clean, but black cars are impossible to keep clean.  So here are the cars we are considering:

First, a 2004 Pontiac GTO.  Red with red/black leather interior.  18,000 miles.  Priced at $24,000, it is a little higher than it should be, but the car is exceptional.  Here is a link:

Secondly, for your consideration, a 2007 Monte Carlo SS.  2200 miles and priced just short of $26,000.  Red with grey leather interior.  Here is a link:

    [linkhttp://www.rsportscars.com/eng/cars/montecarlo_ss.asp]http://www.rsportscars.com/eng/cars/montecarlo_ss.asp[/link]

And lastly, a 2005 Mustang GT.  Red with black leather interior.  5 speed manual.  3200 miles and priced again, just short of $26,000.  Here is a link:

Personally, I think the Mustang is too high, although it is a very nice car and obviously has low miles.  New, with similar equipment, is around $32,000.  I have just never been much of a Ford man but this is definitely a fun car to drive.

    So, which car???

How long are you planning on keeping it?

Are you concerned about gas mileage?

Actually, my vote is for the Monte no mater how long you plan on keeping it. It's a good-looking, nice performing car and has the lowest cost of ownership.

This is a tough one for me Billy becasue I personally would not buy any of those cars, especially for that particular price range,  so I can't be of help in that arena.  What I can do for you is provide you with safety information so I will get back to you with this info in a little bit and my personal pick will be strictly based on "safety".   Btw- how did I KNOW it was gonna be red...lmao![;)

Billy, I feel much the same as you, I just don't buy new cars.  Why buy new when I can knock $10,000 off the price to buy something a year or two old with less than 20,000 miles on it.

Anyway, every time I have bought a used car I have found it on [linkhttp://www.cars.com]www.cars.com[/link].  I really like this website b/c I can track down all the specs I want before I got out looking for it.  That way I go to the car instead of driving around to dealerships and hoping that I find something I like.  I have always been able to get the car with the most added amenities, the lowest mileage at the best price this way.  I have also been able to have some say in the color this way.

    Good luck in your search!

I bought a 2004 RX-8 a few years ago but it was between that and the new Mustang body style which I love to death.  So the Mustang of course would be my vote just b/c I love it so much!  The Ford dealership SUCKS to deal with though.  I always had Honda's before and would be in and out in a matter or hours.  With Ford, it takes DAYS for them to do any type of work on my car.  And of course, everything on the RX-8 is totally overpriced.  Thank God for a great warranty!

Probably to around 100,000 miles.  Her current car has 114,000 miles on it.

No help from me but good luck.  Car shopping sucks.

Well, seeing as how these cars are all V-8s, I would say, no.  [:)]

FYO, my Mom has an older Mustang and although she loves to drive it, she says it stinks in snow.

Same here.  Nothing like washing your car, putting away the hose and stuff only to turn around and watch the film of dust settling on it [:-].  My last car was red though and I'm not sure I'd do that again either.  I tend to like foreign cars best, but if I was picking between these 3 models, I'd probably go for the Mustang.

Well, best laid plans…. The NHTSA website is down for maintenance so I can#%92t get those crash results right now and two of the vehicles, IIHS either didn#%92t test or they are not giving the results for them online.

I was able to get some results for your mustang GT and it has an acceptable rating with some areas rated as “good” so that doesn#%92t look too bad.  If you are interested here is the report:

I was able to find one rating for the monte carlo and it has some good ratings as well.. but I wish I knew what organization tested this vehicle. It doesn#%92t say…. But hopefully done by one of the big companies without stake in that vehicle.  Here is the report if you are interested:

SO I would say that either one of those should be a decent option in terms of safety.

Again, I personally would not consider these types of vehicles for this price range, but speaking from just a “looks” standpoint, IMO, the mustang absolutely beats the other two out.  That said, Jim has owned 2 fords now and both have had problems and we will likely never own a ford again.  His first ford was a Probe GT, and while he LOVED that car, it was always in the shop. 5 Years ago he traded in the probe for a focus ZX3  (figuring the car problems he had were specific to the probe…) but that car has been in the shop multiple times a year since we have owned it.  SO, no more fords for us.  We actually vowed to only buy foreign after his ZX3, and yet we somehow I ended up with a Chrysler 2 years ago…. So what the heck to we know anyway! [;)]   AND btw- I LOVE my black car.. even when it is filthy. [:)

I just turned in my Monte Carlo in November and I loved it!!  It was a great car!  We had to get rid of it because the lease was up (I will never lease again) and we needed something with four doors for the baby car seat.  We never had one problem with the car ever!

I also agree that black is beautiful (my Monte Carlo was black), but it was a pain to keep clean.  We ended up getting silver this time and it is much better!

As I said, I am not a real fan of Ford either Shel, but to be fair, a Probe is actually a Mazda that is branded Ford.

I forgot about my lease.  I have had, if not owned, another brand new vehicle.  In 1996, I leased a Toyota T-100, SR-5 trim.  Very nice pickup.  When the lease was up 3 years later, I had 17,000 miles on it.  Someone got a hell of a deal.  I will never lease again either.  The only good thing I can see about leasing, assuming the vehicle is not for business, is that you can drive a nicer car than you can afford to buy.
