Grrr my neighbor killed my landscaping!!!

Glad that you didn't take the suggestion I had...a nice chocolate pie laced with ex lax!

Ivy IS basically a weed and no matter how awful it looks right now, it'll be back in full force.  We TRIED to kill ours and it would NOT die.

Well, I'm glad she was reasonable.  Definitely needs to hire a better landscaping company next time that won't get her into trouble like that.  Here's hoping the ivy comes back healthy and "happy".

lol well the pie in the face did make for a good visual even if I didn't do it :)

My neighbors Ivy comes over and under my fence. I just cut it off the top and cut what comes under the bottom. I throw the clippings away. I personally don't like the looks of the  Ivy on my side and it tries to strangle my vegetable plants. It is a pain in the neck, that stuff grows fast and is pretty hard to kill. I hope yours fills back in quickly. I'm glad to hear that it wasn't her that did it.She sounds like a nice neighbor, sometimes we're better off when we're mad and have to wait for them to get home, gives us time to cool down a bit.

I may be totally wrong, but in the first pic, that looks sort of like trumpet vine.  If it is, that stuff grows like weeds, even worse!  Does it have orange colored flowers on it?

I am glad you were able to resolve it with your neighbor.  Sounds like she is a decent woman.

WOW!!!  I am glad that I read the entire thread before responding, because I was ready to recomend using Round-Up all over your neighbor's yard!  I'm happy to hear that you neighbor was reasonable.  I hope that your ivy grows back even nicer than before.

It might look pretty sad right now, but it really is almost impossible to get rid of ivy.  It won't be long before it's creeping back over the fence and poking through the wood slats again. [:)]

Well that turned out to be the best case scenario. [:)] I'm glad that you don't have a jerky neighbor!!

edited because I hadn't read the whole thread! I got so mad upon the first post that I replied in haste!

I'm glad she took responsibility for it and was willing to make it up to you.

    I'm sorry about your ivy!

No, the ivy doesn't flower at all. If it grows back and is really hard to kill then I'm just going to cut down the remaining junk and wait for it to grow again. And I'll trim back the overgrown stuff on the sides.

Thanks for all the responses and for listening to me vent. I have this really bad habit of acting/speaking before I think when I'm angry so venting here first helped me calm down before going over there.

Your Ivy looks very ;pretty, and it does add to the view, but if it were me - I wouldn't want that much Ivy growing over a fence.   It will hasten the deterioration of the wood, and the lack of sunlight on the fence will encourage mold.  And the weight of it is not good for the fence either.  It will eventually become a really big on-going battle for you to keep it out of your flower beds and lawn.  Even more so for your neighbors - as it looks like most or all of the roots are on the outside of your fence.  I have Ivy planted in a ten square foot area around my fish pond.  I'm constantly trimming it and pulling out new shoots to keep it in check so that it doesn't spread.   But if you want it to grow back, I don't think you'll have to do anything.  It will probably come back pretty quickly.

This is all so, so true.  I have ivy that creeps in from two different yards, one on the side and one in the back.  It gets to be a real PITA trying to keep it trimmed back and the weight of it has caused the back fence to start falling over toward the other yard.  Fortunately, they have some trees that are holding it up.  It's also a breeding ground for rodents.  We have a problem here with Norway roof rats and the county ag department keeps telling us to keep the trees trimmed away from the roof and keep the ivy thinned out and off the ground.  If your fence gets a good amount of sun, you might want to just get rid of the ivy altogether and try something like morning glory vine. Good luck!

We have Honeysuckle covering much of our fence (planted by the prior owners).  It's beautiful and smells wonderful, but as others said, it too is like a weed.  DH prunes it back heavily every few weeks in the spring/summer and it comes back in days.  The main thing I wanted to mention was the rodents though.  We were having a terrible time the first year or so and couldn't figure out why.  My one dog was actually snatching them out of the vines and then we found a nest of babies [:o].  If you let it grow back, be sure to keep it trimmed up so that you don't have that to deal with.

I have to agree with Joyce (fuzzy dog's mom): I've always gotten rid of ivy when I lived in a temperate zone where it could grow (not in Alaska). It IS a real problem when it comes to mice and rats. Especially rats.

I'm so glad you have a nice neighbor! She seemed to go the whole mile with you on this thing! Sure hope they didn't spray something toxic in your yard. [&:]

I can sit outside in the patio at dusk and entertain mysef watching the rats running along the 2 X 4s.  I don't which is worse ... the fact that I'm watching rats for entertainment or the fact that I'm not bothered more that I'm entertaining myself watching rats.  Either way, ya gotta make sure they don't get inside and that means not giving them a place to breed in your yard. [:D]
