Allergy question

    Allergy question

Forgive my ignorance but before now allergies aren't something I've been at all familiar with!

Can an inhalant allergy like to some pollen or something....cause a headache or feeling of pressure in your face? In the absence of sneezing or watery eyes?

I've had a headache for a couple days now...and prior I was thinking I must have developed an allergy. I did have sneezing but that's stopped...same with itchy feeling in the throat and nose...all stopped. Now it's just this pressure in my face...that I can even feel thru my teeth (going to the dentist to rule out tooth trouble)it's more one side than the other but even walking makes my head hurt at this point! Needless to say I am grumpy as can be! I've also got a lot of snot up in my head...thick and clear stuff that comes out when I blow...but my nose doesn't run on it's own...weird! Claritin or Sudafed will clear my nose...but not higher up...where it seems the snot is...but it does help my head feel clearer in general perception wise..and I am a bit less grumpy. Tylenol helps a small amount but not really...

I just wonder how I can feel this bad and not have other symptoms like sneezing or watery eyes or etc...

Anyone have any thoughts? Medications OTC or otherwise they'd recommend? I am hoping this is seasonal and will go away in a month or so once summer heat kicks in...

Of course;) That would be a sinus headache. I'd really reccomend natural remedies, as every drug I've tried for allergies knocks me out. QBC (bromelain is the second ingredient, I can't spell the first or remember the third) works well for me, as do homeopathics.

That sounds like a sinus infection, my daughter had one like that a few months ago, teeth hurting and everything. She had to take antibiotics for three weeks to get rid of it. Also humidify the air, and drink tons of fluids. They said she could take 3 advil at a time for the pain.

Yep, I get the same thing.  I always say "I don't have allergies" but I do get those sinus headaches when pollens are really high around here.  Sacramento is horrible for folks with allergies and I'm thankful I don't have all the problems others do, but I do get those nasty headaches for a few days at a time when pollens are bad.  I personally haven't tried homeopathics because Motrin (or generic) works wonderfully for almost any problem I have.
I used to be a dental assistant and it was very common for folks to come in thinking they had a toothache.  The x-rays would show impacted sinuses though and no problems with any teeth and we'd refer them to their regular Dr.  You can sometimes tell the difference if you feel pain and/or pressure when you bend your head over.  If it makes it worse, it's probably allergies or a sinus infection and I'd head for the Dr.

Motrin doesn't touch my sinus headaches. I quit eating dairy, though, and that's pretty much cleared them up. Dairy can cause inflamation of the mucous membranes, and increase sinussy reactions.

Our pollen level is only medium right now and if you don't normally have allergies, it probably isn't that....I am always affected when it is allergies.  The first thing I thought of too was a sinus infection.  I remember when I was in high school I had one and my face got so swolen from it that I finally went in and that was the problem.  I had the same symptoms as you.  I would make an appt with the doc and put yourself out of your missery.

This is the best place I have found to look to see what is in the air ;pollen-wise!  Feel better soon!

That definitely sounds like a sinus infection to me. You might need antibiotics, and I would suggest taking a decongestant also, because without that all the stuff won't drain out, which was my problem last year. I got an antibiotic, which cleared up the infection, but I was still congested. Then someone else told me to get a decongestant, and that finally cured the rest of it. Although,I apparently have horribly damaged sinuses, so sinus infections are probably going to be inevitable for me, or at least until it gets so horrible that I require some sort of surgery, or at least I think that's what's going to happen.
This is probably going to sound like torture, but if you have one, or can pick one up cheaply, get one of those handheld electronic massagers and run it on your face. Make sure you use the soft pads and put it on a low setting. It sounds like torture, it feels wierd, and might be hard to do (it was easier for me if someone else did it to me) but I really felt that it helped me. You'll probably blow out a ton of snot after you do it, but it really does help. It also helps if you have a cold, and your chest is congested. Run it over your chest and back. It always makes me cough right after, but I think it helps, so I let my mom run it on me.

Hey boneyjean, remember that HUGE windy day we had  a week or so ago? Just DEMON winds...well that day and the day after my daughter had HELLACIOUS allergies...poor thing, I recall the pollen counts were super high for oak and maple that day....well a day or so later I, too also developed the same issue...itchy nose an dthroat, watery eyes, runny nose followed by stuffed up. All the rest went away cept the stuffy nose and now this new pain etc..

I do think it is a sinus infection brought on by all that dust and crap getting into my nose...sigh. My son who's 2 has been SO cranky lately..intermittent fever and runny nose...off his food (amazing for him! I think it's because it hurts him to chew, like me)...so I think he's got one too. I am setting an appt for him on Friday I hope. Myself I'm going to try to get in next week...

I'm going the decongestant route now...and pain stuff (acetomenaphin)...doing the same for my son. My daughter seems fine after her initial bout...

    I hate this tho..it's bad!

Oh I do!  I had a hard time keeping my skirt from flying over my head a few times!  [:D]  I sneezed like a lunatic and then I guess it passed for me.

Even when it is just allergies, I often use Dayquil when I get them really bad like that b/c it has the pain reliever and the decongestant and doesn't make me tired.  Otherwise I use Claritin and Nasonex daily!  They don't always do the trick though when I feel like you said you do.

Hope you all feel better soon!

    Hi Gina,

Sinuses! UGH!! The bain of my world for the past few months too.  I have found using just a plain nasal salt water spray, plus the antihistamine, decongestant, and pain meds helps tremendously.  Use the nasal spray several times a day. It helps keep the gunk in your head washed out.  It isn't pleasant, and it will definitely make your throat feel horrible, and possibly even make you sick to your stomach some, but it will keep the mucous from sitting in your sinus cavities and getting infected (and turning green).

My favorite combination has been the nasal spray, Alka-seltzer Cold Liquid gels, and a product called Watkins Menthol Camphor Ointment. I use it at night in my nose and ears.  It works wonders, and has been something I have used since childhood.  And even better, Walmart has started carrying it! You don't have to find a vendor anymore[sm=dance.gif]!

The A-S Cold medicine would make you think it is for a 'cold', but it works tremendously on the headache, sinus pressure, and nasal congestion. Not to mention, you don't have to pick the silly plastic card off the shelf and go to the pharmacy to get the actual box of meds. It has pseudophedrine in it, but it is in the wrong form for the meth cooks to use, so it isn't behind lock and key like all the rest of the stuff is. (Yes, I live in Texas too).

I hope you feel better soon! Allergies are the worst this time of year. By the way, glad you are back!  I love the pics of the beagle puppies! Specially Cuatro - I just love his little face!!!

I had those exact symptoms for the last three months, and went to four doctors and tried four different antibiotics and nothing, finally went to an ENT who said allergies, which I have never had before and gave me something I forget... but boy is it nice to not feel like that anymore.  I had literally forgotten what it was like to feel "normal".  Hope you get to feeling better!

It is entirely possible for allergies to CAUSE things like a sinus infection, asthma, all sorts of really awful stuff.  When I lived in WV and CA and was being stuck with cortizone every month, something I had already demonstrated allergies to, my other allergies were dreadful.  Now I just deal with the seasonal stuff and don't need a ton of different meds and inhalers and everything else.  But, I suffer this time of year....everything from coughing, sneezing, dry eyes, etc.......

yes I think it's not full blown allergies...it was an overstimulation of my immune system that day with the extreme winds and high pollen count. Basically I think that both overloaded my normally non allergic nose and sinuses...and then sat there...festering.

I was actually SICK  afew days afterwards with a cold, body aches, and slight fever, same as my daughter and son...then as I said all went away cept the pressure....grrr.

I've narrowed it down to my maxilla sinuses because of the pain in my teeth. The decongestant I took helped a bit last night...and coupled with the pain killer I think I will hang out and see if maybe I can drain it out myself without a doc's visit...I think I'd be given antibiotics and such and I'll avoid that if possible. It finally rained here so no doubt the more humid air will help too :)

Thanks guys for all the input...I and my family appreciate it!

Gina, I didn't have allergies till I hit college, at least not that I noticed.  I would get sick every spring and it would just get worse and worse till I did have an infection.  Now, when spring starts, I take generic claritin on days I know I will be outside a lot and I keep all that at bay.  But like others have said, you probably need antibiotics to help kick it now.  It's possible to develop allergies later in life, which sucks.  ;)

A year or so ago we went to FL for vacation in late fall and man was I miserable!  My allergies kicked into high gear for some reason and I had to buy decongestants at the hotel!  yuck...
