I've stayed out of here because I am by all means, not a grammar and/or a spelling nazi. I don't really know if that last sentence was supposed to have a comma or not. However, it seems that others seem to think I am a grammar nazi. When working on some group stuff for a class, one of the group members complimented my grammatical abilities on several occassions. She really thought I knew what I was doing. The truth of the matter is, I barely have a clue. However, she, and most of the other people in the group, were much worse at it than I was. So, I would frequently end up correcting their grammar, because it was actually so bad that I could notice problems with it.
I however can not determine when to use effect vs. affect, and I have trouble keeping my principles straight. I just tend to go with what looks and sounds good, and often times, the other people in my group wrote things that looked and/or sounded like total crap, just like this sentence does.
I do take pride in that I am usually pretty good with spelling. One member of the group, the one who complimented my grammar abilities, was trying to spell the word viscous. Her first attempt was fiscus. What is a fiscus? Is it a weird ficus. Then we told her the word was spelled with a v. So, she came up with viscus. I knew that was still wrong. I knew it was viscous, or viscuous, but I couldn't decide which. However, I then determined that we did not actually need to use that word, and got called the activity she was writing about by a different name. That is what I call creative problem solving.
