    THANK YOU!!

Thank  you, all of you, so much for all you kind words and good wishes -  the e-mails, PMs and cards.  It really meant a lot.  You guys are all so great - you're like a second family.  And if you ever wonder whether those little gestures really mean anything ... the answer is "yes, they surely do." Now I have some information I want to pass on to you.  Mels' biopsy showed that there was no particular starting point for his cancer.  It just very suddenly appeared everywhere.  The diagnosis was melanoma. He had sort of a strange mole on his upper back thigh, but it didn't look a bit different than it ever did - no change in shape, color or size.  When I asked the doctors, the answer was that sometimes there is no obvious change in a mole, and it might not have even been that mole.  It could have been another, much smaller one.  Apparently the malignancy can go into the blood stream, where it spreads just like a fire, without ever showing anything unusual on the outside.  His sister has about three moles that she's been trying to get rid of for years and the doctors she's seen (both military and civilian) have told her she'd have to pay for it herself because removal would be considered cosmetic.  Sorry - I know where these moles are - and unless she's planning to start a second career as a stripper, there's no way this could be considered cosmetic. I told her to get back to the Dr. and tell him her  brother just died from melanoma and she wants these things gone ASAP.  So my message to all of you is this ... if you have moles anywhere, keep an eye on them.  And if your gut tells you they should be removed, don't let a doctor convince you that it's for cosmetic purposes. If they can be malignant without ever changing a bit, don't fool around with them.  And thanks again for all your support.  A big ((((HUG)))) to all of you.

I'm glad to see you back and posting.  I would have bet money on the cigs all those years ago, but never on a mole!  Thanks for sharing the warning.

Welcome back, Joyce.  I'm so very sorry to hear about Mel.  I had no idea.  I know there's nothing I can say to ease your loss, just let you know that you're in my thoughts & prayers.  ((HUGS))

I learned you lesson with FIL.  He was lucky that they caught it in time.  Since then I've had a cancerous growth removed from my face & another one that I MADE them remove when they wanted to "keep an eye on it".   Thank you for your cautionary words & I hope that people really take your words to heart.

Joyce, I am so sorry for your loss. When I first read of your husband being sick, it sounded so much like my My father-in-law who passed away last July, that I was afraid this would be the outcome for your husband. I'm not sure if they ever did figure out where the cancer originated in my father in law. It was only about 3 weeks from the time that they actually diagnosed that he had cancer until he passed away.
My thoughts are with you and your family.

I forgot to mention, Thank you for sharing the info about the moles. Any sores that do not heal should also be checked out.

Joyce, thanks so much for sharing this with us. I have a lot of moles and all the dermatologists I've seen generally just take a look-see at them. I'm going to get more insistent from now on. It's good to hear from you.

I'm glad your back too Joyce.
And, thank you, thank you, I've had something I've been wanting looked at for awhile but keep putting it off.  You've just convinced me to get it checked.

Joyce -I am so sorry and can only imagine how tough this has been for you and your family.  Thank you for the great advice you've given everyone.  I'll add that it isn't just moles, but watch for small areas of skin that might be discolored.  I was at the Dr. and asked about a mole.  He  looked at it and said i should come back for a biopsy.  When i went back, he looked at the mole and said that's fine - i don't think a biopsy is necessary (made me mad that i had gone back).  I then asked what a small 3/8 inch area of discoloration was on my leg.  He said it was probably nothing but he WOULD biopsy it.  He did, and a few days later i got the call that it was cancerous.  It was not yucky - just slightly red like a birthmark so get those checked out too.
