Official West Coast (WA, OR, CA) recommendations thread!

    Its road trip planning time!

BF and I will be taking a road trip from Seattle to San Diego during the month of July-beg. of August.

We will be starting in Washington and passing through Oregon and Coastal California, ending near the Mexico Border.

We are planning to take Highway 1 or 101 through CA (undecided, see Highway 1 or Highway 101 thread).

Please feel free to make any and all recommendations as I am starting to plan an itinerary!

    All suggestions appreciated!

ETA: Sorry to inundate the board with threads about this, but I need help!

I don't have any info regarding California or Washington.  However, I can give you my opinion of a bit of the Oregon coastal route (Hwy 101).  Astoria is the northern-most tip of Oregon, and it's a pretty little town (I think parts of Kindergarten Cop were filmed there).  You can see where the Willamette and Columbia Rivers meet the ocean.  Heading south on 101 from there can be a long, curvy trip (it's not like you can zip along at highway speeds), but if you're in the mosey-ing mode, it has some breathtaking sights.  If you can get a good map of the northern coast, that will help.

Our favorite town along northern 101 is Cannon Beach - it's small enough to walk the main "drag" where the terrific shops and dining are, and the beach is great for walking, tide pool exploring etc.  Also, it's a very dog-friendly town, if you'll be traveling with your buddy.  The time of year you're going is a busy time, but you may still enjoy it, despite some crowds.  And by crowds, I mean along the streets and shops, not the beach itself.  One thing I've never seen out here (compared to the east coast beaches where I grew up) is the wall-to-wall towels and blankets of sunbathers.  Even in the summer, the beaches seem comfortably populated - not overrun with people.  And all the beaches are public - so you don't have to find the one or two spots that aren't restricted to private use for residents only.  Also, the water is freezing, so it's not like everyone is swimming -- just some surfing, lots of wet suits.

There are lots of state parks along 101 worth checking out (I'm not a camper, but if you're doing that, there are lots of great parks for tents, RVs, etc. -- but I think you need to reserve spots in the organized parks ahead of time, not sure).  Again, if you can track down some maps and state park reference guides, that will help.

A drive we like to take with visitors from other states is the Three Capes Loop - it's off 101.  It contains stunning coastal views, with places to stop for walking, hiking, lighthouse visits, etc.  All along 101 as you go south from Astoria are little towns, some are quaint and others are touristy, neon, tacky places with too many fast food joints, chain stores, etc.   For example, Lincoln City is a popular destination, but it's got outlet centers, a casino, lots of traffic, etc.  It depends on what you're looking for.

Further south on 101 is Depoe Bay, which is a fishing village.  It's a good spot to take a whale watching trip or one-day fishing excursion.  Whale pods swim very close to shore certain times of year there.  Continuing south is Florence, which is much less rocky and rugged than the other places I mentioned -- it's known for its dunes, so if you're into the buggy riding, it's around that area.

I haven't gone further south than that, but my understanding is there are some beautiful areas.  If you're going inland at all, Crater Lake is supposed to be awesome.  We haven't made it there yet.

Sounds like a fun trip -- lots of gorgeous photo opportunities!  As much as I dislike living here, I admit that it's a beautiful state (I just think quality of life requires more than natural beauty, and Oregon lacks some pretty important things, in my opinion).  You'll be coming the best time for weather - plenty of sun, rare chance of rain, no humidity.  I'll bet you'll have a wonderful time!

I have only been from Eureka, CA up to Brookings, OR. There are so may beaches to stop at on the way down, but only a few are breathtaking. The first place I would stop would be the Trees of Mystery. But it does cost money to go on the ride through the trees. Just south of that is  Newton B Drury Pkwy. That takes you through some of the larger trees. There are hiking trails up and down that scenic route.

Gold Bluffs Beach. I camp there every summer, and I could never get enough of it. Fern Canyon is about 2 miles down a dirt road from Gold Bluffs Beach. Some of Jurassic Park 2 was filmed there.

Another good stop would be Particks Point. It's a nice tourist place with lots of things to do. About one exit south of that is Trinidad. You HAVE to stop there. It's a pretty little coastal town with some good clam chowder at the resaurant by the dock. And if you get there during low tide, the rocks will be littered with sea stars and anemones.

Yay! This is exactly the kind of thing I want!

A lot of people have put suggestions in other threads, but if they don't mind, it would be great to have them all in one location!

Thanks Shannon! Those photos are great! I can't wait to see them in person!

Oooohhh, I have lot's of recommendations.  Heading south through California:

    Mendocino/Fort Bragg
    Bodega Bay
    Napa/Sonoma (wine country)
    Sausalito
    San Francisco
    Santa Cruz
    Capitola
    Carmel
    Monterey
    Big Sur
    San Luis Obispo
    Santa Barbara
    Malibu
    Santa Monica
    San Diego

I may not have those in the exact right order, but it's pretty close.  All of those areas are on Hwy 1 or 101, and I think you'll probably be using both anyway.   You're going to have a great time!!

The whole Orange County (California of course) coastline is lots of fun, all the little beach towns. Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Balboa Peninsula, Laguna Beach, Dana Point, San Clemente.. 40 miles of the cutest little towns, shops, and restaurants, plus beautiful scenery. I hear Catalina Island is awesome, but I've never been. [linkhttp://www.catalina.com]www.catalina.com[/link]

When you are down near LA, you have to see malibu, santa monica, and palos verdes.  Chelsea has orange county covered.  For san diego, check out carlsbad, del mar, la jolla, mission beach, and coronado island if you can.  If you go to the california parks web page you can get a listing of all the camp grounds if you want to camp and even make some reservations.  The hotels are pretty darn nice if you can swing it :)

Edit:  I've been to catalina and it is really fun, you should check that out if you can get there too.  There is lots of things to do as well.

Here's my post form the other thread:

101 is freeway - sometimes 4 lane, sometimes 10, like in LA.
1 is a smaller road, 2 lane with traffic lights. In some areas, like Malibu, its called "PCH" or Pacific Coast Highway.

1 is really windy, hugs the coast where it can, it's slow and lots of fun, expecially further north, I remember that around Big Sur it's gorgeous. I took as much of the 1 on a trip from LA to SF years ago, loved it.

A lot of coast near Oxnard and San Diego is taken up by military usage. If you drive out by Lompoc, you can see launch towers at Vandenburg.

The 1 between Oxnard and Santa Monica is nice, but from there, passing LAX, it's blecky an durban. It gets nicer again in the south beaches and Palos Verdes, and south of LA, around Laguna Beach and Dana Point is nice too.

If you want to avoid freeways, you could take the 1 from Santa Monica to Ventura, then the 101 to Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, then head out to the coast for Pismo, Morro Bay, Monterrey, Santa Cruz, etc..

At Santa Barbara, there's a nice side track, San Marcos Pass, the 154, that goes up by a lake Cachuma and takes you through one of our So Cal wine regions - Santa Ynez Valley, I think its called. You can have a nice lunch, do a wine tasting or two. The 154 drops you back onto the 101 just south of Santa Maria.

There are a few other wine regions along the way, let me know if you want to hear about 'em.

Astoria is a great place to visit!  Make sure to stop and see the Astoria Column--it is totally cool.

We have wonderful cheese in Tillamook and Bandon.  The Tillamook cheese factory tours are free and fun.

The sand dunes are awesome to see as well.

Lincoln City is crowded during July and August on the weekends, but it managable on the weekdays.

Seaside is fun as well.  Deope Bay is gorgeous! Winchester Bay (mouth of theUmpqua) is great to see.

I forgot--if you're into wines, turn left on highway 18 and come see me!  I am in the heart of Oregon's world class wine country!!!

I used to live in Eureka and went to school in Arcata, just up the road, and just twenty minutes farther north is Trinidad and Patrick's Point. Definately second going there. I'd take the coastal road (101) as much as possible up north, it's just gorgeous. And just south of Eureka is another cool little town, Ferndale, where they filmed a lot of "Outbreak" with Dustin Hoffman. Lots of Victorian homes, neat little shops.

    Turning left in Lincoln City.

That's funny,  I wonder if we've met before.  I am born and raised in McMinnville.

The Bayfront in Newport can be kinda fun.  Some good shops and resaurants.
Depoe Bay is a good, get up and stretch your legs kinda place.

I prefer the california coast to the oregon coast as far as things to see.  I had a blast when I went to Venice Beach.  One of my favorite beaches is Laguna, but it can be pretty crowded now after the show[>:]  I love San Diego.

Have fun.  Hope we get to see lots of pictures.

Ok, so most of my California recs are already listed.... so here are some "tourist" ideas for you....

I would definately consider Catalina.. it is cool and you take a boat over to it.  If you are planning on staying sorta near the coastal areas, I would also suggest Redwoods national Park

    [linkhttp://www.nps.gov/redw/]http://www.nps.gov/redw/[/link]

    AND Hearst Castle

    [linkhttp://www.hearstcastle.org/]http://www.hearstcastle.org/[/link]

and make sure to include some of the Napa Wine country if you like wine at all.

As far as San Diego.. be sure to visit Coronado and downtown san diego (the gaslamp district).  Lots to see in San Diego... if you like Zoos, we have a world famous zoo and incredible wild animal park.. not anything like any other zoos you have probably seen...   [;)]

    [linkhttp://www.sandiegozoo.org/]http://www.sandiegozoo.org/[/link]

    [linkhttp://www.sandiegozoo.org/wap/index.html]http://www.sandiegozoo.org/wap/index.html[/link]

AND Sea World is really neat if you have never been...

    [linkhttp://www.4adventure.com/SWC/default.aspx]http://www.4adventure.com/SWC/default.aspx[/link]

AND of course Disneyland is also a must if you have never been... you gotta do it at least once in life...

If you need help deciding what parts of san diego to stay in let me know.. I can help pinpoint a few and YES.. camping is a great idea along the coast BUT GOOD LUCK.. these campgrounds are ALWAYS full... so you must get reservations really early.. you might be able to get a few mid week though and they are really neat!    [:)]

If you're looking for places to stay on the coast, this site seems to cover a lot of area.  This place, near Big Sur, was recommended by both my MIL and SIL.  They even allow dogs, so I'm hoping we can make it there sometime soon.
