Why would anyone want a Fila???

I was reading the latest Dog World today and it's a rare breed special. I'm familar with Filas, but I read more about them and just how aggressive they are. They absolutely detest strangers and have a hair trigger for biting in order to protect their owner or home. Below is an excerpt from this site: [linkhttp://www.operationk9rescue.com/breed-fila.asp]http://www.operationk9rescue.com/breed-fila.asp[/link]

Filas are very protective and are stranger aggressive. They will not hesitate to attack someone if they feel that person is a threat. This can include children who walk past your fence on their way to school every day. This can also include family members whom your Fila does not live with. If you have guests over on a regular basis, your probably should NOT have a Fila. A Fila in full temperament because a potentially dangerous situation.

I just truly don't understand why or how anyone would take on such a liability when there are other breeds that are just as naturally able to protect, but not so aggressive. Like a well bred Bullmastiff is supposed to be a naturally good judge of character and can even be friendly to strangers, while protecting you in an instant if you need it.

With a Fila, they're so aggressive, you can't even have friends or family over around the dog. Yikes! It just seems like it would be incredibly hard to spend 10-15 years avoiding all the situations where your Fila could attack an innocent person. How does a dog like that go to the vet, even with a muzzle on? I guess I think it's borderline unethical to purposely breed a dog that aggressive..

A client of mine, who I really don't care for, want to breed their American Bulldog to their friends Fila, so they can sell the puppies at their store.  What an idiot[:@]   Mind you, they also brag about their aggressive wolf-hybrid.

any dog can be aggressive....there are huge dogs even small dogs that will be aggressive strangers or people they dont know well
people get dogs because they love the breed and the people who truly love the breed of dog they are getting, will be very commited to socializing and training and make their dog the best ambassador to the breed
there are good and bad dogs to every breed

had to edit out the word bite there...i was meaning aggresive

I think you may have missed my point. Filas are different from any other breed in that it's CORRECT temperament for them to absolutely hate strangers and be aggressive towards them. No matter how much socialization you do, they will detest strangers to the point that you have to live your life walking on eggshells (in my opinion) to prevent them from biting. I just don't understand why anyone would actually want that when there are other protective breeds that are so much less aggressive.

I would be really interested to hear their opinion. I still don't think I'll understand why there's a need for a dog as aggressive as the Fila when other breeds can do the same job.

There is a fila owner here, but I don't remember his name.

The fila would not be the right dog for me, I like having people over and I can't make any promises that I wouldn't be making any new friends.
From what I've read, they're GREAT with their owners. They're ok with others AS LONG AS you introduce them into the dog's life before 8 months old. Anytime after that, it's not suggested.

There are other natural guard dogs that aren't as anti-social.

But people who buy these dogs, I believe, know what they're getting into. I hope.

Oh, and I've only been able to search and find 2 breeders in the US for these dogs.
    • Gold Top Dog
They are called a Fila Brasileiro to be exact.
Why on god's green earth would you blame a dog that was bred by humans to be this way? Centuries ago when the world was much more rural and differnet then it was today, these dogs were admired by their couragesness, loyalty, and determination. They are to be respected for the service they have given to humans WHO MADE THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE!
If you were a woman in the counrty side and your husband left you with your kids and went to battle that dog would be your best friend, he would guard you with his life and die happily knowing he protected you and your family. I only wish humans had as much loyalty, courage, and honor as these dogs do!
Now that we live in a differnt day and age where their service isnt needed are we supposed to shun them? No the responsible thing would be to try and cleanse the line instead of exterminating them. The responsible thing would be to recognize how humans think they can play GOD and breed something to be made this way and then discard them because they are deemed vicious.

    Wait.
I don't have any problem with the breed. I don't blame them for how they are. I just wouldn't own one.
Maybe I missed something, I mean, I surely could have, but did someone say they blame filas for being, well, filas?

Just out of curiousity, do you mean breed the stranger aggressiveness out of the breed?
    • Gold Top Dog
Yup, you got it! Aggressivness is bred into a dog over decades, it can be bred out of a dog as well!

Also, I think it's really important for people to give some serious thoughts to the traits in the dog they are thinking of getting ... to really understand how the dog is and to consider whether or not they are the type of person who can handle a dog known for aggression.  There are way too many people getting dogs just because of the *image* it projects and they don't have a clue how to handle or train the dog.

You got it! I ince heard of a breeder who would take payment of a dog but wouldnt hand over the ownership UNTIL the dog had been sent away to specific training by a accredited school that trained these dogs properly. I think that should be a law for breeds such as this. Heck if thats what I'd have to do to get my pit bulls I'd do the same thing. I also belive that dogs deemed "vicious" SHOULD be registered through their local county so it would be easier to hold owners accountable for their dog!
