    MomStuff-1st Field Trip today-freaked out.

You might notice me trying extra hard to distract myself today lol!

Lily has her Kindergarten field trip today...and I am trying not to freak out. I for some reason am just not comfortable with her begin bussed around by the school. I don't know why...lack of seatbelts? Lack of confidence in the driver? who knows...Neither am I comfy with her being away from school on the college campus to watch the theater program do some show...*sigh*. I am so over protective, it's really bad.

The whole reason we made this last move was to be within walking distance of a elem. school that was recognized or better...so she would not have to bus.

Trying not to see buses flipping thru the air in my head right now...or her getting lost on the college campus and being scared...*sigh*....it's all me, Lily is a good kid and her teachers are good at what they do...and they care about the kids too...but I just need to vent on my own insecurity...lol!

    Thanks for listening.

Gina- no worries about the bus thing. I work in injury prevention and there are reasons why they have been so slow to add seatbelts onto buses… school bus crashes are VERY low and the seats actually work to sort of “compartmentalize” the kids so for all but the worst crashes the kids don#%92t normally move around too much (trying not to be too graphic here for you less you have bad images floating around in your head!)[8|]

But honestly Lily is FAR more likely to be injured when riding in your vehicle than she is in a school bus… so NO WORRIES…don#%92t stress yourself out over it![:)]

Yes the wreck thing is worrying me today, thank you for the facts...it helps.

In general tho...the buses themselves aren't why I dind't want her busing daily as a Kindergartner. That was more because they bus all the kids together k-6th and I am just sure she'd be hearing some things and seeing some things she wouldn't really know what to do with...and even perhaps getting picked on. I know when I was in school buses were pretty rowdy! The littler ones did get picked on...and the driver was the only adult and they were driving, lol!

When I called the ISD transport. office to ask about attendants on the bus and supervision...I got put on hold every time for EVER and the people seems hurried and a bit rude. Not warm fuzzies at all...I think I made a good choice in that respect...since I still to this day don't know if they have attendants or protect the small kids in some way.

Yeah, that doesn't instill a lot of confidence does it?[:@]

I understand your concerns... I think in my area the real young ones are bused seperate so I have never really thought about this issue...

Gina - are they using chaperones for the field trip?  Could you have volunteered?  I'm sure she'll be just fine and hopefully will have a lot of fun, but I'd probably feel the same way that you do.  They have field trips to the state capitol here all the time, but I always see several parent chaperones with them.  Maybe you could see if you could do that in the future.

I could have yes..but I have Elias and well...he's not really invited, lol! Where I go...he must go.
Legalities being what they are, siblings aren't really invited on field trips unless they go in the parents car...and I do not drive [;)]

Yeah, I thought about Elias, but thought he'd be able to tag along.  I didn't realize you don't drive though, so I guess that option is out.  I'm sure that Lily will be just fine, but I'm guessing it's not going to be the most relaxing day for you [;)]

Oh boy do I know that feeling! I sure do empathize.

If it makes you feel any better - at least she's not a 5th grader who is a patrol going on the trip to DC in June for a week and you were not one of the four parents to win the lottery draw to go as chaperones.  After swearing to not get her a cell phone before she can drive I have seriously been contemplating it for that week!  As well as trying to find a microchip GPS unit to implant! LOL!

Oh geez..  I totally understand.  We don't bus the boys to school either, for much the same reasons you listed!  Their school is so small, that buses are run according to neighborhood ONLY - not grade or age group.  This means they'd be riding with HS'ers...  uh, no thank you.  As for field trips, I know it's freaky.   It was *really* scary at first and these kids go to majorly crowded places/events all over NYC.  Anyway - after a few of them, we became more comfortable.  If you trust the school administration and Lily then *try* to chill out a bit.  I know easier said than done...

Robin, I saw this today and thought I would pass it on.

It is based on cell phone technology, and while it does operate as a cell phone - you can program only three numbers into the phone that can be called.  But, more importantly, it acts as a GPS tracker!  They were talking about it for Alzhiemer patients, but it would be great for kids too. I love the idea!

You'll have to let us know how she did...I bet she had a wonderful time - and typical of a child--she probably didn't have a care in the world, while you were home stressing out!

Thanks Amy - looks like a great product.  Now if I can only find somewhere to rent for a week and not buy!   LOL!

Em went on her first field trip last week. To an ice-cream parlour (the marble slab kind). I was worried that she'd eat a bunch of chocolate ice cream and go all PCP-like out there(she's very sensitive to the effects of the smallest amount of caffeine)! I  did think about it the whole time she was gone, wondering if she was behaving, having fun, etc. It was three parents driving their mini-vans to transport the kids (she goes to a small, private Montessori school, no buses). But all turned out okay. Even though she did eat chocolate ice cream with oreo crumbles in it!

She will be ok :) I was nervous and scared too...with my first 1 I brought her and picked her up so she didn't have to ride the bus too so I know how u feel :) I've also chaperoned many times and we take really good care of the kids...usually they are put in small groups with each adult  and the kids are checked on constantly :) I have never heard of anyone losing 1 :)
Hope she gets home soon and you cna relax again :)

How was the field trip? [:)]
