I can't stand Imus, either.  I'd rather pee in my own coffee and drink it, than listen to that man... which is why I don't.

I'm probably inviting trouble, but the only thing that really bothers me about this situation is apparently you're allowed to call random young women "hoes" you just cant have any hint of racism.

Its nice to see Rutgers doing a news conference now, discussing what type of students and hard workers the team is.

FCC does have rules about when and what you can say. IMO if he violated those with his comments he should be disciplined up to and including firing. Same as anyone else who signs a behavior code of conduct for their workplace.

This is why Howard is no longer on terrestrial radio, but...Howard is one of the least hateful men I've ever listened to...he does hate Imus tho..lmao. Besides Howard is half black...he'd never stoop so low! [sm=rotfl.gif]

That had me laughing out loud..........[:D]

They are both shock-jocks, maybe Imus needs to move to satellite radio, also.
• Gold Top Dog
yeah its wrong for an old white man call them nappy headed hoes..... but its ok for young black men to call them *content removed* when they "rap" about them.
Lets all be hypocrites now.

DumDog...I wanted to address your post....and not just Dumdog....I've noticed.. other folks on many a blog etc making this same point and so I want to ask,

How exactly do you know  that Sharpton, Jackson,...other black leaders...are "ok" with the kinds of reference you mention?

Why can they also not have a big issue with it and in fact speak against it? Because they have:
"Black boys and girls are not immune to these images either. They think gangsta rap is exciting, and we have got to say it is not exciting. It is not fresh. It is not new. Gangsta rap represents the same old chains that we have been trying to break free from for the past 400 years. Damaging stereotypes diminish the self-esteem of young people all over America. Rap is one of many outlets that reflect narrow racist and misogynist stereotypes, and its power increases with every #1 single. More of us should speak out and talk about how it is contributing to the breakdown of society, giving our kids the wrong image of who they are and who they can-Al Sharpton"

How do you know many elders and pillars in the black community..not celebrities..but actual people...are 'ok' with it? Isn't that a rather large assumption to make? Aren't you assuming that because some black men and women refer to them as x or y in a song....and they sell even a million records...that ALL black folks are 'ok' with it?

Here's my take on Imus...he has a job...like many here do...his happens to be broadcasting on radio. We all have codes of conduct in the workplace and ways we are expected to act. If..we or a co worker were to say what Imus said...do you think they'd be disciplined? Do you think they might even be fired? He has been suspended and I think that's fair. If Al or anyone else wants to call for his job...then they can. Fact is this...he represents a company...if that company does not like or appreciate the image an employee puts forth in conjunction with their name...due to customer complaints or poor service or whatever. That company is doing no wrong in firing them. If that company is fine with the discipline the administered, want to keep the employee because they feel it's an abberation or they can deal with it with perhaps sensitivity training...then that is also..their choice.

It's only a race issue if you make it one, really. It's more a workplace behavior issue to me. He acted a fool at work...and he has been disciplined...if it's not the first offense...then perhaps more measures should be taken. But that's his employers call. Al is free to complain and the co. is free to ignore him. As are we.

i agree RW but my point was that an old fella behind a microphone says the same thing and people call out the heavy artillery and start gunning for his job. Why didnt they do that the first day someone said X orY in their rap song?  or ANY song for that matter?
Why did they allow it to continue? They banned Cop Killer, but what about "You's a Hoe" or "Shake that @$$"?
The song "Goodbye Earl" was under fire because its about killing an abusive husband and getting rid of the body, and well no one missed him anyway,so it was a good thing but there were groups wanting to ban the song.. but what about Slim Shady and... well. ALL of his music....but in particular his song about the crazed fan stuffing his pregnant girlfriend in the trunk of the car and killing them all?
The first Godsmack CD was banned from walmart because some 13 yr old kid bought it and his dad complained to the store for selling it to him..... WHAT?!!?
I dont doubt that a lot of "elders" dislike the garbage selling as #1 songs..  i know a lot of young people that disagree with it too, but if the FCC really wants to do its job then they dont need to make so many exceptions. What exactly is freedom of speech again because the lines are really grey now.... its ok if SHE says, but HE cant..... Well THEY were just kidding and it was funny, but THOSE people were serious and it was in poor taste!
Just like this forum, some words are not allowed and will be removed, no acceptions, no matter the connotations.
I know that no one is ready to go back to the uptight days of "I love Lucy" and "Leave It To Beaver" when married couples slept in separate beds and everyone's clothing covered head to toe, but why didnt we cling to the moral ideals of watching our mouths and treating others with respect? I mean, come on! Elvis shook his hips and people had heart attacks (for different reasons of course), but when you turn the tv on the music channel now.... you are likely to get a full frontal anatomy lesson!! Country music was mostly decent until Shania Twain showed her belly button..... now country videos are as skanky as rock and rap videos. is this really progress or just pitching a fit and screaming until we get our way?
If those old timers dont like the decline of language in music (and/or other public things that represent their culture) then they should not allow it in their home. They should have been parents and taught their kids better, and i mean this for all races, not just one in particular.
I dont want to go off topic again, with yet another thread so i'll shut my yap because this whole thing will lead to me ranting about a chain of events throughout history that has lead us to this point.... and honestly i'm not feeling well right now and its effecting my attitude, so ..... i'm sorry. believe it or not i've edited this reply three times.... this is the short version [:'(]

DumDog....the forum isn't really relevant in a freedom of speech debate...it's a privately owned an operated space that you sign an agreement to use, after agreeing to all it's terms and conditions to use it. Just like a person's workplace is a privately owned property in many cases..with rules that you agree to follow as a condition of employment. Apples and Oranges, really.

As to the rest? I have read many things on the hows and why's of  the language used in rap music...IMO it goes a lot deeper and it's not anything I will be discussing here. BTW..who is "they?" Fcc? Black community? Parents? Government in general?

People protest...because it's their right to do so...and as I nor you are privvy to their other activities on the equality front (perhaps because that doesn't make as good of TV?)...I really couldn't make judgements about what they do or don't do, as regards to rap music. Perhaps they boycott? Should we minimize that as a tactic to voice our opinions now?

It's my understanding that the FCC requires certain things to be censored...but I haven't listened to terrestrial radio in so long...I have no idea how well that's done these days. FCC can control the radio waves if they so choose...and if majority would like them too. Walmart bans things because they are concerned about money. If majority of their shoppers would go elsewhere because of a Godsmack CD...why the heck would they sell it to make a point and lose their precious income? Freedom may be American but so is making money...and IMO that's what it all boils down to...making money.

true the forum is privately owned, people sign agreements, businesses are the same, they expect a certain code of conduct but people still protest and sue businesses over things like this.
Maybe it doesnt compare, but did you read inthe news last Christmas about the Rabi that threatened a lawsuit against an airport because they had a Christmas tree and NO a Monora? .. how ever you spell it... So the airport took the tree down and said "fine... we just wont celebrate ANYTHING"   i know you cant mix religion and government, but.. i dont know, are airports government run, or how does that work? i really dont know.. but anyway. its used by the public, but it has CEOS and company presidents and what not.

i uh.. dont remember who "they" are lol i used it loosely meaning "if the shoe fits" i guess...
i dont know about any hows and whys in rap music.. i just figured they did it because they wanted to and knew they could get away with it.

According to my husband the FCC has a list of words (seven i think) that are absolutely NEVER to be said on the air.. i wont list them because i dont wanna get banned [:D]
as for terrestrial radio... the newest music i listen to is 1994, except for certain artists, the rest is all 80's 70's and 60's. i think the stuff they churn out today is junk, so i dont bother tuning in.... thats how i protest.. if you could even call it that.
Thats why i dont know anything about Imus, or Stern.. infact when Anna Nicole died and i heard the name Howard Stern mentioned i almost gagged.... thinking "Now THERE'S an odd couple"

When you're a celebrity, no matter what caliber, you have a certain amount of responsibility otherwise if you speak your mind too freely your tongue will cut your own throat..

maybe its a blanket statement, but i think the world is full of crybabies, more than there used to be it seems. i still think its being hypocritical for EVERYONE to attack that cantankerous old fart for his statement. If a black guy had said it, it would be ok. THAT has been proven. Regardless of the punishment, there's still people out there that want him lynched and removed from his job. they dont work with that company. Heck, some of them arent even black. I didnt HEAR the comment, i only read it. it was bad, but it wasnt that bad. not like he was quoting hitler or burning crosses.
