The name Xerxes (Ed, for you!), "300", and questions/comments about forum rules. :)

I just saw the movie "300" last night. I FINALLY know how to pronounce your dog's name.

    Awesome name.

    And, actually, awesome movie.

Oh wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't know how to say Xerxes (that's the dog you're talking about, right? Or Gaia?). I just looked it up like three days ago. [:D]

I am still trying to understand the forum rules.  Now this thread breaks rule #8, right?

    D'oh!
I didn't even mention which dog.
Sorry, Xerxes is the dog I'm talking about.
    Zerkzeez is how it's pronounced.
I was saying the first "X" correctly but when it came down to the "xes" at the end I wasn't adding the "rk" sound. I was pronouncing the second "x" like another "Z". So I was saying it like "Zerzeez". Well, I never "said" it aloud, just in my head.

Man! Why are you like, telling on me, Dave??
I probably should have PMed him, but I figured that I am not the only one who might not get how to pronounce his dog's name and if anyone had seen the movie "300" they might get it.

No matter how many times it is phonetically spelled for pronouncement, the next day in my mind it is going to be Xerox.  I am so bad with names.

Change the thread title and then you have not broken the rules.

    Thats funny, I thought ZerZess

I've always "said" Xerxes, exactly like it's spelled x's and all.  and that's still after seeing "300".  heh... just can't get it out of my head now that I've been "saying" it for months.   lol...

    zerxzes....

    zerckszes...

    something like that.  heh.

I watched enough Discovery channel that I did know how to pronounce it...and I also learned that "Nefer" means beautiful...how's that for cultured lmao (heck all my culture comes from yogurt....live and active!)?

Still haven't seen that flick...I was all geared up to but it's since petered out.....happens often!

Good grief... Don't pretend that you're trying to "learn" the rules. [&o]

All you guys/gals rock!  And yes that was one rockin' movie.

Gina, you're gonna have to get Elias a Gladiator shield and sword now, and take pics to offset all the high heels and tiara pics.[;)]

ETA: I almost forgot that I was glad they pronounced his name the way I've been saying it.[;)]
(Although one of my friends still calls him "Penis" and the darn fool that the dog is, he actually responds to it!)

Good grief Charlie Brown, if I am anything I am not pretentious.  I like the rule, a lot, but it was safer to speak up with Chewbecca than the other threads that referenced "Jamie".

Exactly, you weren't trying to learn anything. [;)]

the only reason i know how to pronounce that name is because i had a teacher in high school that MADE US learn how to pronounce Greek names.  she wrote all the names on the blackboard - with the proper pronunciations - told us to learn them or else.... [:'(] THEN we each had to stand up in front of the class and prove to her that we knew how to pronounce them.
I honestly think her dog chewed up her list of things to teach and she was just making stuff up..... or she just wanted to torture us because she knew the majority of the class was "redneck" or "gangsta" and she wanted to expose them to as much culture as she possibly could.

about the movie..... i love history, and especially love Greek/Roman type history, and i love it even more when they make films about it. but since this is a film about a particular battle, i have to ask an incredibly silly question..... How gory is it? I know today's society has to see blood and guts spilled on screen in order for things to be "accurate" but its a turn off to me. Too much eye candy and Special FX is just a filler to cover up holes in the story. If its two hours of slashing, cutting, chopping, and only 30 minutes of dialog and plot, then i'll be sure to miss it.. or at the very least wait for it to come out on DVD so i can fastforward to the actual plot.
The film Gladiator would have been amazing if they just didnt get so nasty with it. i know its about a Gladiator, but so was Spartacus with Kirk Douglas and i dont remember seeing as much gore... but that was a different time.
