    Bunnies and Puppies

So, in the spirit of Easter i got a rabbit....
k i'm kidding. No, i really DID get a rabbit, but not because its easter. that would be giving into destructive propaganda.
I have actually been planning on getting a rabbit since last September, so, no.. it wasnt an impulse thing.

As for the mentioning of puppies... Yesterday my husband and i saw a stray bulldog type in our neighbourhood. the people next door and across the street thought she was one of ours - dont know how they made that mistake. Kaydee cant walk and she and the other two are three times the size of this little lady. She looks and acts like a JRT/Pit cross, but there is no way to know. She's full grown, has a docked tail, and LOOKS like she might be spayed.. but i didnt see a scar or tattoo on her belly. the old man next door seems to think she was dropped off.
She's a friendly girl, but we're not going to keep her. She has no training that we can tell, doesnt seem to be house broken at all but she practically demands to come inside. Our plans are to ask around if anyone is missing her, maybe have her scanned for a microchip, though i doubt anyone out here has ever heard of that but it wont hurt to try. if no one is missing her then we're going to work on some manners and basics and try to find her a good home. she would be great for an elderly couple, or someone with kids - so far.... we've only had her since yesterday and there have been no incidents, and i am watching her like a hawk for any bad signs. But other than scratching at the door to come in she's a very good little dog.
If my in laws didnt hate pit bulls so much i would give her to them.  maybe i could pass her off as a JRT mix?. which she may be for all i know. she has an undershot bite, and a bully head, but she is very lean, light framed, and covered in dalmatian like spots. i doubt she is pure pit.. few are these days, but that shouldnt, and doesnt matter.
If my husband can get his computer fixed i'll try to post pictures of her.

How sweet of you to teach her some manners and find her a new home. Its more than alot of people would do?

BTW, why do you think she may be spayed? What would give that away? I'm just curious, not doubting.

i'm only guessing really, it could be that she is just young and hasnt had her first heat yet, but the physical characteristics i've noticed on spayed females that have never had puppies is their nipples are ..well... unused. also the vulva area isnt swollen like on unaltered females. in this area a dog like her would have been bred ASAP (pit bulls, you know the demand for them..) and she doesnt show signs of ever having reproduced.
But like i said, she could just be really really young. she has all her adult teeth so she probably isnt any younger than seven months old.
Some vets dont tattoo a dog after spaying, i've seen that myself in a couple of dogs i've owned in the past. i think its more common today to tattoo them, otherwise how else would you know? unless you look for some kind of physical signs. but again, unless you know the dog you're just guessing, like i am.

I wish this dog could talk. i would love to hear her story because she's a little mystery. she is very very submissive with people. loves children like they are the joy of her life (my 1 yr old cant stand her though- he isnt a dog person it seems)
This evening when i was going outside to feed everyone she was on the porch bouncing straight up and down in front of the door.... If someone dropped her off i wonder why. she is such a sweet heart. If she wandered away from home why hasnt she gone back? she has it in her head that she belongs here with us. and we only noticed her yesterday. But she wont leave our yard unless we leave, and she follows us right back home again, up the steps, and tries to come inside with us, we let her a couple of times and she spent last night inside, but we're having house training issues.... one of the things we're working on. Seems that she lets us know AFTER the fact that she needs to potty..... she will come sit beside us or give us a nudge. we get up to let her out and then... *squish*.... brand new puddle in the livingroom floor.
Sure the carpet needs replacing, but i dont want to replace it next week!
My cousin has let me borrow her crate for Kaydee, but Kaydee doesnt need to be confined anymore since she is getting her legs back to functioning, so i'm thinking we might try to use the crate in house training. i've never crate trained and older dog. my dogs were always crate trained as puppies, so if any of you have some tips for me, i'm open to any and all suggestions. i dont want to traumatize her and make matters worse.

i think a lot of pit type dogs have spots, you only need to look as far as rosie to see them...

you are head and shoulders above a lot of people for taking her in; i applaud you. [sm=clapping%20hands%20smiley.gif]

as for the in-laws, i personally wouldn't give anyone who "hates" pits any type of dog at all.  just my opinion.....

Yup thats her, exept she has black spots abd she's built like...... a Fox Terrier almost. VERY lean, doesnt have a bully chest, but she has the wide hips and muscular thighs. her chest might fill out if she was exorcised more.
And well, my father inlaw, because he worked with cars for so many years met a lot of "junkyard" bulldogs, plus the bad press, so he actually might have a reason to be leary. if all you have ever seen of a breed is man eaters snarling at you behind privacy fences(and lets face it, people love to use pits as junkyard dogs) then you might have biased opinion that they are all like that. He also thinks our female Kaydee is a potential killer just because she growled at him when they first met. Of course a few weeks later he was outside playing fetch with Kaydee. But still says he doesnt trust her. His wife is a different story. She's just agreeing with her husband. She isnt a dog person anyway and thinks i'm not only insane, but am corrupting her oldest son because we not only have three dogs, we have three BULL dogs - they dont know about the new one yet.
So yeah..... its a shame they close their minds and limit themselves like that. This little girl, if she was any other breed, would suit their lifestyle well. But its their loss, and hers too because she needs a small family where she is the main focus.
and i am disappointed in my husband's daughter.... i mentioned the dog to her, she was interested, i showed her the pictures stored on my camera. and she said "ugh.." which translates into "She doesnt look like a frog with hair so i'm not interested" [>:] she wants to buy a bluenose pit from a friend.... i say "ugh" to that!
