Legal collars are the same legal collars for obedience. So, slip collar (chain or nylon) are legal; as are buckles. I would check the AKC website but I do not believe limited slip or martigales have been approved yet. No prong collars are supposed to be on site, but folks often ignore that. Safest approach dont take them.
Jamie is right. You best be talking to your dog and looking like a team. Also, you will need to have a J loop in your lead. A tight lead or guiding the dog is likely to end your run with an NQ. Timing is the key. The lost points of crooked sits etc, are really minimal. If you forget an obstacle, do it over, it can be the difference between qualifying and getting a leg and not qualifying at all. Make sure you take advance of the opportunity to walk the course repeatedly. I usually wait until most folks have left so I can walk the whole course beginning to end without the bottle neck. Prior to that I just go from obstacle to obstacle to make sure I understand the sign.
Tight fast turns are what get you placements.
