    Showing Rally

Could anyone out their help me?  I was wondering what kind of collars are legal for AKC Rally competition.  This is my first show and I want to make sure I don't mess up something as simple as the wrong collar.

I believe it is a buckle collar. I would check on the AKC site...I'm sure they tell you. Did you go to a class to do the rally?

I'm going to attempt to get a rally title on one of the Am Staffs this year and if she does OK, I'll be working the rest and heading towards a CD

I haven't been to the rally class yet, my mom goes and I have been going to obedience.  I couldn't find it on AKC, all I could find was for obedience.  Maybe I'll email akc if I can't get an answer.  I was hoping I could use a choke collar, my dog is very rambuncious and sometimes needs a correction.  Maybe I'll get more info on this site.  Thanks.

The Obedience regulations are the same as the Rally as it is "Rally Obedience'.
I just was on there to check for you.

Have fun! Let us know how you do

Reading the akc regulations an ordinary choke collar would be o.k. I believe, because all they refer to is prong collars and shock collars.  Do you think this is right?

You can ask there if it is acceptable before going in the ring. Take a buckle collar with you just in case.

One thing I have learned from my friends is that the more you talk to your dog and are positive the better the score as this is supposed to be fun for you and your dog

Good to know.  I am very excited to go.  I always showed horses so this is my first Dog show on April 8th and 9th.  I will let you know how it goes.  Good luck with you Am Staffs (p.s. I like your website, I got the pit bull on one try) I had to try and convince my mom the a staffordshire terrier is not the same thing as a pit bull.  Your dogs are beautiful.

I really want to do rally and I think the brindlewonderkid is ready, but it seems like the local stuff always conflicts agility.

I am just getting into it,  I went on the akc website and you can find out where all the shows are for rally and agility.  Maybe you'll have to travel a little ways,  I love going away on the weekends, I used to show horses and traveled a lot, this will be much easier!

    Thanks!
I enjoy them, my daughter and son have been very involved since we started showing. They LOVE it DS has ;put a championship his girl Faith, the dog in my avatar and has showed her son Markie, my specials dog and has many Best of Breeds and a Group 1 win all under the age of 16. I think it's great your going to do this and of course we'd love to see pictures and hear all about the shows.

    Good luck! keep us posted!!

Legal collars are the same legal collars for obedience.  So, slip collar (chain or nylon) are legal; as are buckles. I would check the AKC website but I do not believe limited slip or martigales have been approved yet.  No prong collars are supposed to be on site, but folks often ignore that.  Safest approach dont take them.

Jamie is right.  You best be talking to your dog and looking like a team.  Also, you will need to have a J loop in your lead.  A tight lead or guiding the dog is likely to end your run with an NQ.  Timing is the key.  The lost points of  crooked sits etc, are really minimal.  If you forget an obstacle, do it over, it can be the difference between qualifying and getting a leg and not qualifying at all.  Make sure you take advance of the opportunity to walk the course repeatedly.  I usually wait until most folks have left so I can walk the whole course beginning to end without the bottle neck.  Prior to that I just go from obstacle to obstacle to make sure I understand the sign.

Tight fast turns are what get you placements.

Wow, thank you all for the tips. I rarely see Rally talk in the Training section, so this was a treat. I'm taking Ellie (the one to your left here) to a Rally event in April. Actually, it's just an exposition but still--we're doing 10-15 signs and showing Boise, Idaho what Rally O can do for them. (Most people here having bird dogs and working/herding dogs.) I don't have a purebred (sometimes I sigh about that but mostly I don't) but there should be enough little local things to do with Ellie (and even Murphy) that I'll stay busy.

Oh, I needed each and every tip. Ellie is so easily distracted but she looks so good when she's working well with me, with her tail held high and a smile on her face.

There is always AKC  ILP...  If your dog looks even some what predominantly one breed, there is a chance you could get an ILP number and compete in performance events.  In  UKC you can compete with a mix breed dog if you get a number.  Both registries required vet signed papers indicating spay or neuter and pics.  The forms are downloadable from the websites.

Another tip I got from my friend who is doing Rally with her frenchies is to make "Flash cards" to study the signs used on the course. She gave my son her set as he was showing interest in doing Rally. That was before we moved off the old house and got the new one...I haven't tried locating them yet but feel as if I might need to make my own.

The thing I love is that Rally is SO easy to set up in your own backyard for practice!!  This website has the sings (might not be up to date but it's a start) and helps you lay out a course for practicing:
