A Question of Etiquette

Just a thought, but there may come a time when you entertain and perhaps you would serve wine to your guests.

I've thought of that too, but given that my hubby can't touch it and I'm allergic to it (my face turns beet red and burns), people that come to our place know they're not getting wine.  That, and people that come to our place drink out of cans and bottles [8D]

hey post a pic... maybe I want it

Haha, ok, here is the silver one:

And here is the one I registered for.  It matches a large serving bowl and my dishes which are a matte finish black on the outside/bottom and a bright aqua/turquois crackle gloss on the inside.  I LOVE my platter and bowl - I actually have the platter displayed on a plate stand and the bowl in the living room holding our remote controls.

I do appreciate many of the gifts we got but didn't register for, but they were from friends who know our tastes.  For example, the following are cool things we didn'g register for:

Someone got us nicer floor lamps than what I picked

(I did a photo project of textures and still objects, hence these random pics of all my crap)

wow, fancy schmancy.... are they heavy?  i like them, personally, but i see how they don't fit with your scheme...

Oooooohh, I love that platter too and I'm sure the bowl must be beautiful.  The gift from the uncle seems like one of those traditional kind of gifts you see advertised all the time.  Honestly, I'm sure he thought it would probably be a lovely gift, but I'm with you, it wouldn't ever be used in my home.

I bet that salad bowl and serving utensils would fetch a good price on eBay!  Go for it!

I think the bowl is very pretty, but definitely not my taste.  ;)  I agree, sell it on eBay.

We have discussions about this all the time.  My BF hates "lists" because he feels that if you don't know him well enough to know what he would want, don't get him anything at all.  I agree in principle, but people will still get you something, so why not give them hints?

I would give it to someone in the family... or, honestly, just keep it in the basement and hand it down to your kids (maybe it'll be retro cool then). It's not like it will take up that much room in the moving van. I guess I just squirm at the idea of making money off a gift someone picked out for you. A lot of people really don't like giving from a registry, although I'm a fan of registries myself... so it's not exactly the rude gesture it may seem that he picked out this not-you set.

Nope, it's pretty light, a LOT lighter than the other one I picked out.

BTW, I didn't mean it to sound like I'd be making money of this.  I know how much it cost and I never sell things for more than they are worth.  I sell lots of stuff for friends and family on eBay and a school forum and always post the current value if bought new.  I probably made it sound like it's worth a lot more than it is, my bad.  It's worth $100 new which for my family is a frickin LOT of money to spend on a gift or a bowl.  We are definitely $20 Target gift card people! :)

Which reminds me, I have to re-post my wedding dress for sale.  That's another bone of contention.  My in-laws think I'm insane for wanting to off load my wedding dress.  My mom's all about selling so I can add more in the pot for a car and she's the one that bought it, so....

I think you should do *whatever* you want!  Sell it, keep it, throw it away - when he gave it to you, it became yours.  That's what happens when you GIVE something to someone!   You do not have the right to dictate how the object is used or the  money is spent, when you gift it to someone else.

    *bump*

Just got an e-mail from my supervisor at the Humane Society.  We are having a benefit garage sale in May, so I can donate all the stuff I'm trying to sell and get a tax write-off [:)]
