Looking for couch in all the wrong places

I have no furniture in the livingroom. Why? Because:

    1. I love leather - can't afford leather.
    2. Fabric just does not stand up under the insult of three rhodesian ridgebacks and two cats with claws.
    3. I am too cheap to shell out $1000+ for furniture and I don't want to make more credit debt.
    4. My house is very small - 1008 sqft and my living room is very small - call it 12x14. Most furniture is built on a scale that just overwhelms my space.

So I was in Wally buying seed starter stuff and walked through their patio stuff. Guess what? There's a patio sectional of iron and upholstery all pieces about $500.00

    1. It's the right size for my living room. Visually it does not overwhelm.
    2. The fabric is tough because it was made for outdoors.
    3. Did  I say it was $500?

Pair it with a nice bold area rug and I am in like Flynn. I'm going to try to paste the image below...

    Huh - go figure.

ooooh I like that!  I think that's a good option considering the specifications you have listed.

We have no furniture here except my SO's old beat up couch neither one of us likes.  Our apartment living room is small and oddly shaped (longer than it is wide)....and since we are not planning on living here much longer (buying a house) we just don't invite many people over :)

The universe is being plentiful with me this morning!

I've been scouring Craig's list for a loveseat for my tiny living room (been sitting on pillows for year ... it was a zen thing). But now I have a 6'4" BF who takes up the whole room when he sprawls on a pillow, I need to get him upright, heh.

I never shop at WalMart, but I'm going to go find one today ... that outdoor set is perfect!

Thanks soooooo much for sharing your find!

The only thing I'd check out is how the cushions are anchored. There was the wooden version of that kind of couch at one of the places I rented, and when Stevie got up on it, he invariably knocked the cushions on the floor. I used one of those rubber non-slip mats under the cushions to help keep them in place, but it was a challenge. You may have to work on that aspect of it, but I say you go for it! Looks like it just might work!

It sounds cool.  When I was in Africa I noticed a lot of their furniture was much more similar to patio furniture here (wooden frames with thinner but heavy duty cushions) and thought it looked really cool, as long as the whole room is decorated with kind of a worldly theme to match.

My second kitten destroyed my couch, but it was free from my aunt and really hideous.  When I got married, we went to a second hand store and found the perfect couch for $200.  I found the same one online and it's $1800.  It's hard to keep the cats from scratching it, but it's a good shape for just using slip covers in the future.

That is nice looking, and it will most likely do the trick for you!

But I gotta tell the story of my patio furniture.  I got some really nice stuff at Sears a few years ago...for the patio, though.  The cushions lasted exactly one year...the squirrels pulled them apart to pad their nests!  Needless to say, I didn't replace them, and now have just metal frames.  Well, at least they are pretty frames!

That's a really great set.  If you sew (or know someone who does) at some point you could make covers for the cushions, adding a bit of fabric that would let you tie the cushions onto the chairs.

I always buy thrift store couches. As long as they are clean, they work for years and then you just throw them away and get a new one. [:D]

I found a Walmart and had a look at the set. It's pretty nice. Sturdy, yet lightweight - whole thing comes in one big box! The only downside is that the padding in the cushions is a little thin. But I'm thinking I can re-stuff 'em or make new ones when they poop out. They do slide around a little, maybe a little velcro on the slats would help. They are comfy! Gonna have my big lug BF go sit on 'em to make sure he fits :-)

Again, thanks for turning my attenion to patio furniture! I'm only gonna be in my current house for the couple of years. It makes the most sense for me to spend my $ on either patio furniture or a sleeper sofa - something I can use wherever I go next.

    Wow, that is nice looking!

I think that would look good in any livingroom.  It has such a neutral color and really is very nice looking.  I would not have thought "patio furniture".   That's great!

My couch had to go to the dump when I got my puppies - too much pee time up there.   My first experience with pups.....you learn as you go.  So, I have waited 3 yrs, and just had a garage sell chair I was using.  It was getting tough with two dogs wanting on my lap.  I like leather too, but they seem to scratch off the dye that is on there.  The store people say a good quality dye will go all the way thru, but I have an ultra expensive chair that they have scratched the color off of, so I am now suspicious of buying leather again.

Finalllllllly, I was walking thru Ashley Furniture and they had a sell on a microfiber.  It was a very economical price.  So, I thought I would try it - the best thing is that the cushions are attatched.  On my previous couch, it was made big and fluffy on the top of the cushions.  I wanted to avoid that b/c that is where the dogs would go -- comfy and up high -- and it totally messed with the cushions.    So, I was glad this couch was not "as nice".

Have I said how nice it is not to have 80+ lbs on my lap where I can hardly move or breathe?

We - us on this board - are a crazy bunch...........the things we do for our dogs............

Did I say how much I   LOOOOOOOOOOVE having a couch and a seat to myself????  An actual seat to myself!!  Where a dog is happy laying beside me.  Where I can get up for a drink or whatnot without moving and irriating the whole gang.

Gee, it sure is nice having a couch again.

So, I know how you will be feeling!!!

    That calls for a celebration.

Yup, I think next weekend I'm getting it. A little velcro would fix the sliding for sure.  And you can get velcro tape so that should be no problem!  And as for the cushion - can always change those out and still have that solid iron frame.

To the poster who said that the furniture reminded her of what she saw in warmer climes - that would explain why I like it since I'm originally from the caribbean.

Chasza, microfiber won't work for me - I've got three ridgebacks and two cats. This outdoor fabric, which is not ucky plastic, probalby would.

Jeez, my living room is the size of some people's patios apparently!

That rubber shelf liner stuff comes in the perfect size to unroll and put under the cushions. That worked pretty good for us.

Oh, I love the idea of the outdoor fabric being strong.    I am guessing the cats will be harder on the cushions that the dogs (not counting big doggie pillow fights, of course).

I think that is a very ingenious thing to think of.  And, again, I think the furniture is waaaay nice enough to go into a living room.  They make really super nice stuff these days.  Hmmm,  anyone else remember re-webbing outdoor chairs every summer of a couple decades ago?

    Yep, waaaaay nicer stuff now!

Oh, and I still like putting down and tucking in a sofa protector I have from Lands End.  Expensive, but made of super heavy material.  So, I guess you won't have to worry about doing that!!

is it sticky stuff or basically a rubber sheet (can you tell I've never lined my shelves?)

Oh, wait .. I lied! I have that rubber net stuff in my shelves ... is that what you mean?
