Differing Pregnancy Tests

    Differing Pregnancy Tests

I had a hunch that I might be pregnant (missed period by about 3 days) so I took two pregnancy tests this weekend.  They were the 1- or 2-line kind.  Both showed positive.

So I went to see the doctor today.  His test showed negative.  (Urine test.)

I wasn't buying it, so tonight I bought the digital kind of pregnancy test so the results weren't exactly up for interpretation.  The result:  "PREGNANT".

I will make another appointment with the doctor maybe for a blood test, but I - wrongly? - assumed that the test the doctor performed would be more accurate.

Any ideas what might be going on?

The doctor's test could've been wrong...My girlfriend had the same thing happen to her and she was indeed pregnant.

Wait another week, go back to the dr. for another test...

For whatever reason, the doc's test could not detect it this early.....just a guess.  Good luck![sm=wink.gif]

Hmm, I found this (at [linkhttp://www.peeonastick.com]www.peeonastick.com[/link] - haha) just after I posted -

"25. My HPT was positive, but the urine test at my doctor's was negative. Huh? Urine-based pregnancy tests vary widely in sensitivity. Often a home-based test (HPT) is much more sensitive than the kind your doctor's office uses. (Often doctors or clinics use tests that are sensitive to 50-100 mIU/mL of hCG; most home tests detect a level of 15-50 mIU/mL of hCG. See the [linkhttp://www.peeonastick.com/hpts.html]HPT Overview[/link] for various HPT sensitivities.) Practically speaking, this usually works just fine. By the time a woman suspects pregnancy and confirms with her doctor, she has usually missed her period, is farther along in her pregnancy, and has higher levels of hCG in her urine-- so a less-sensitive test will suffice. [....] Because HPT's are extremely reliable, you should consider yourself pregnant following a positive test. Your doctor should retest your urine again in a few days, after your hCG has had time to increase."

PS - Thanks for the good luck wishes!

If your urine was diluted when you took the test at the dr's it may not have shown up. Was it later in the day or had you had water to drink beforehand? If it's very early in the pregnancy those things could dilute the amount of detectable pregnancy hormone in the urine. Wait a week and then you should know for sure.

It was at 8:15 this morning.  The urine (I can't believe I'm discussing this!) was yellowish - not clear, so it should have been ok... I'd think.

Waiting is definitely the hardest thing to do!

first urine of the morning will contain the most hormones too, so try to get an early appt. with the doctor. are you hoping?

The tests I took over the weekend were on Saturday evening and on Sunday morning - first thing.  (Both positive)

The test at the dr. was at 8:15, 2nd pee maybe.  (Negative)

The test tonight was at about 6:30. (Positive)

It definitely wasn't planned, I'll tell you that much!  It's not a terrible thing either, though, if that makes sense...

Hmm, sounds like another addition to the gaggle of i-doggers currently pregnant. (Welcome to the club lol).

I'd definitely go back for another test in the coming days just to find out for sure. Good luck!

Thanks for the well-wishes, suggestions, and support!  I put a call into the doctor this morning at 8:02, but no return call yet.  I'm going to go get a blood test as soon as he'll let me come in.

This waiting and knowing - or not knowing, I'm not sure - is too much!

PS - Yes, I knew it was dangerous reading this forum!

I believe Congratulations are in order!!  From what I understand, you cannot get a false positive from a pregnancy test, only a false negative.  IOW - the test is detecting HGC, it cannot detect it if it isn't there!  It can miss it because the amount of hormone in your urine is simply not strong enough for the test to detect, in which case you'd get a false negative (as in what happened at the Dr.'s office).  You're preggers my friend!!

You can get a false positive...it's just highly unlikely and much les slikely than a fals negative..here's one reason one might get a false positive...and if I read correctly this was even a blood test...

"A young woman with amenorrhea had a consistently positive pregnancy test result (serum radioimmunoassay measurement of ..beta..-human chorionic gonadotropin hormone).^ No fetal or placental tissue was found after uterine curettage and exploratory laparotomy.^ The false-positive pregnancy test result was due to heterophilic antibovine and antigoat antibodies in the patient`s serum.^ These antibodies interfered with radioimmunoassays using goat antibodies.^ This case shows that serum heterophilic antibodies can interfere with immunoassays and result in unnecessary diagnostic procedures and/or unnecessary treatment."

Yep, that's pretty much what I figured!  It'll be nice to actually hear the words from the doctor, though.  Maybe it will make it more...real?

Edit:  Whoops - thanks Gina for the helpful info!
