Running a marathon for the American Stroke Association

O.K. It's my turn to ask for donations. [:)]

I know Glenda is raising money for MS and in no way am I trying to take away from that, but I felt there was no harm in asking for my cause either so I hope this doesn't rub anybody the wrong way.

I have signed up to run a marathon for the American Stroke Association.  The marathon is taking place in San Francisco, CA oon July 27th. It was one of my personal goals to run a marathon this year and I chose this one because my grandfather, Manuel Chairez, died from stroke complications six years ago. He had his first stroke at the age of 44, which left him paralyzed on the right side of his body. Over the next few years, he was able to recover some of his functionality, but not to the full extent. His second stroke was at the age of 62 and he passed on shortly thereafter.

I was very close to my grandfather and am running this marathon in memory of him. Please support me by donating whatever you may be able to spare. Below is a copy of the email I have sent out to fellow friends and family.

    Thank you!

I'm training to run a 26.2 mile MARATHON to help the American Stroke Association.

Through the association's Train To End Stroke program, I have a coach, a team, training schedules, and special clinics – and I'm raising thousands of dollars for stroke research and education programs. That's important, because someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds and someone dies of one every 3.1 minutes. And 29 percent of people who have strokes are under age 65.

I'm asking for your support through your good thoughts and a generous contribution to the American Stroke Association. I am especially proud to run on behalf of many who've had a stroke and desperately need our help. You can run with me in spirit.

P.S. Your tax-deductible contribution, sent as soon as possible, is greatly appreciated!  Every dollar makes a difference toward stroke research and education.  If your company has a matching gift program, please send me the matching gift form along with your check – and potentially double your donation!

Awesome Sylvia!! Besides being interested in contributing, I'd love to hear how the training's going.  I've always wanted to try to run a marathon, but never could imagine doing it.  I admire you for going for it and I'm sure your grandfather would be very proud [:)]

Anyone can run 26 miles.  It is the additional 385 yards that will kill you.  [:)]

The training is kicking my butt! It's so much fun though! I think Ash loves it more than I do though! [:D] I'm trying to build up to running 25 miles a week right now. For some reason, when I joined, I didn't think it would be that hard. I don't know why I thought that since I'm out of shape, but I thought, "25 miles a week? I can do that! No problem!" Ummmm . . . yeah, not so easy. Especially when American Idol is on!

I've written a blog about my marathon training. It's the last link on my signature, if anyone is interested in reading about my efforts. [:D

For some strange reason, the idea of jogging/running doesn't seem like it would be that hard, but I know it is.  I'm in pretty decent shape and can do 40-50 min's on the stairmaster or elliptical with no problems, but running is a differnet story.  That's why I think training for something like this would be great.  I think I give up because there's no real goal for me.  Maybe you can be my inspiration to try it someday [:)]

    Hi everybody!

O.K. I just wanted to say that I have been receiving donations on my website and many of them are from people I do not know! [:D]  Everyone who donates should be receiving a thank you card in their email, but I just want to let everyone know that if you do or have donated to my site, THANK YOU. A million times thank you! I cannot express my appreciation enough! It's for a wonderful cause and if you know anyone who has had a stroke or passed on from stroke or stroke complications, ;please feel free to include their name and I will run in their memory as well.

There are about three people who have donated that I wonder if they are from dog.com, but since I don't know your last name, I can't personally thank you. I don't want to assume these people are from the forum because if they aren't they may think I'm crazy or something.  Unless you specify on there somewhere that you're from the forum or you pm me and let me know, I won't know for sure. So I've just sent out the auto thank you cards so far. Please know that if you are one of these people, I sincerely do thank you. [:D] [:D] [:D] [:D

Good for you girl!!!  And good luck in your training.  My grandmother had numerous strokes and one finally took her life as well.  You got a donation from me!

Thank you! Anything is sincerely and DEEPLY appreciated. I am so excited about this marathon! It feels great to participate in something like this! I know my abuelito (grandfather) would be very happy about this. [:D

That's great! I could never run 26 miles. Unless someone/thing was chasing me. And then I think after a mile or so I'd just give up. [sm=biggrin.gif]

eta: I love all the "title" choices. Can I be "The Honorable"?[sm=proud.gif]
