Do you speak another language?

I took 4 years of Latin and 2 years of Spanish.  The Latin didn't turn out to be quite as useless as I thought it would - it comes in extremely  handy for crossword puzzles and other word games. The Spanish ... all I can say is that if I had known at the time I was going to marry into a Mexican family I would definitely paid more attention. It's on my list of things to pick up again one of these days.

A second language? I can't even get English right!
Ok, so I am learning Spanish, but only because my Spanish teacher is the best in the world.  I still don't know very much of it.

Si. Yo hablo Espanol un poco.
 
Parlo l'Italiano.
 
Truth is my comprehension at this point, is far superior to my ability to generate sentences.  But I did do a bit better translating espencer's paragraph than Google Language tools did!!!  I took both in high school and grew up with native Italian speakers.  I was "certified" during grad school as competent in reading both, but at this point the two languages are sometimes a bit muddled in my head. Really trying to get my Italian back.  Did OK while we were in Italy a few years ago. 
 
I also was able to read and speak Middle English and Old English in Grad School, but can't anymore - well, I can read Middle English, but my pronunciation would suck.
 
And if anyone has ever studied a Generative Model of the English language, you definitely won't call it easy - the rules to describe how we construct sentences are incredibly complex!!!!
 
But I LOVE language study.  Truly, I do.
 
 

You are never going to waste your time by learning another lenguage, is like an investment, we should have one part of the forum that just speaks spanish so the people that toke it a while ago dont forget it, it helps a lot when you chat with people too, my english got way better when i started doing that with some tourists that spent some time at the hotel where i was working

German on my end, I learned it while my father was stationed there for many years, and later we returned, when DH and I were stationed there again. I actually spent many years in Germany due to the military, and I had fun.

It wasn't until I started studying languages and linguistics until I realized that most of the things you are struggling with (excluding gender) like tenses: 1st, 2nd, 3rd person, present progressive, past progressive, etc.  exist in english, we just don't realize it as native speakers,  and though you are not suppossed to translate ver batim from one language to another, the tenses and uses for them, and frequently the structure are very similar:
 
Take the present progressive, for example:
 
I am thinking = estoy pensando
 
We combine the use of the verb "be" + verb + ing, where Spanish does essentially the same thing: "be" + verb + ando (ing).
 
When you think about it that way, it doesn't make it seem so foreign.

Bingo.  For me it was really brought home when I took a class in History of the English Language.  And that is when we looked at this Generative Model exercise that attempted to describe all the if then rules of Modern English with regard to tense, gender, plural vs singular, etc.  It's complex, it's rules are just deeply ingrained in us and we (meaning native speakers) learned them by osmosis rather than a strict course of study.

I speak fluent Filipino and English. I'm studying Spanish as well, and it's not so bad because a lot of Filipino words are Spanish in origin. The only problem is that I don't have anyone to speak it with on a regular basis, so I get a little rusty now and then.

I took French from the fourth grade through high school, but I understand and read better than I speak.  My grandfather was bilingual in French and English, and even though his dialect was Canadian, we understood one another.  Sadly, since he died back in 1971, I've gotten very rusty with no one to speak to. 
I'm told, however, that I'm fluent in equne and canine. []

Oh, I forgot, that now since I'm so close to Canada that I do speak FLUENT Canadian.

i only know limited words and phrases in a few different languages. dh knows alot of spanish from going to mexico and has alot of mexican friends. he also knows quite a bit of french because he worked with a french-canadian carpet installer for a long time when he was younger. he said alain would always be saying "turtleneck" under his breath and when he finally asked about it, he told him it means something derogatory in french and just sounds like turtleneck, so sometimes when i'm mad i will say turtleneck in a silly french accent [] 

I only know a few isolated words and phrases in a few languages, mostly stuff I remembered from school which means not enough to get by as a tourist asking for directions or choosing from a menu or asking for something in a shop unfortunately.  But I can talk about a few things I have done and about myself a little in German.

Actually that's a lie, I'm not in the least bit musical.

This is true though:

Ich habe drei grosse Schwester, zwei grosse Bruder, eine kleine Schwester und einen kleinen Bruder. Ich verde eine Baby in April  haben.  Meine Katzename ist Greebo.

That's not entirely correct spelling and grammar wise, I'm rusty!!!

I took 2 years of French in highschool and can still recite the French alphabet and count to like 50 or something. But that's about it.
