Well, here's the update. The *^%%$ at the hospital did a mammogram (as ordered) and a bone DENSITY scan instead of a bone scan. The difference is a big one: the density scan is done with an MRI-type machine. The other is done by injecting a radioactive isotope into you and then using a Geiger counter to see if it travels to a cancerous growth. I am NOT NOT NOT paying for the density scan since the hospital screwed up and did it any way.
My mammogram came back normal, so this is a good sign.
I have been sent to an orthopedic specialist who finally showed me my xrays. I would have been weirded out as a medical provider looking at these too! I took human physiology years ago and know just what these bones are supposed to look like and trust me, this join is NOT normal. It looks like someone wadded up packing tape and stuck it around the joint or sort of like a piece of pumice. This doctor looked me over carefully (checked other joints for malformations, etc.) and told me he thinks there's nothing to worry about. However, he has ordered an MRI of the area because he said he would feel terrible if he told me everything is fine and then the growth turned out to be malignant down the line.
He also told me that I could go ahead and visit my parents in April, so that's good news as well.
