I can still taste the lobster rolls at the Pearl Oyster Bar......droooooooool.  I also had a nice sandwich on a gorgeous day at the cafe in Bryant Park - IMHO, one of the prettiest parks in the city.

One of these days I am going to make it back to NYC!

    scrapple

You know, I grew up in Maryland and scrapple was a totally normal, every day food item (even though it's rather disgusting..), then I move to California and find out some people have NO idea what scrapple is! So funny!

As for local specialties, like I said, I grew up in Maryland, so someone says that and the first thing I think is "crab cake!" Oh yeah, I don't live there anymore... But seriously. If you've never had a Maryland crab cake, you've never had a crab cake! I don't know what that garbage is that everyone else calls a crab cake...

Here in Cali? I dunno.. I don't get out much. [;)] Fish tacos like Shelly mentioned are definitely a biggie. Oh! In-N-Out burgers! OMG they're soooo good. They're regularly voted best burgers, which is quite a feat for a fast food place!

Oh! I completely forgot the good suff! Tastykakes!!!!

Ha! I just sent my sister (she moved to Seattle)  boxes of butterscotch krimpets and bags of Unique pretzels.  They are both her fave and she can't get either out west.  I went to MSU and all my Detroit friends loved Tastykakes and I always had to smuggle some back in my suitcase for them!!

I grew up with a Shoo-Fly and /or Funnycake on our table every morning.  I bake them and take them to work and even people around here haven't all been exposed to those yummy pies!!  They remind me of my grandmothers.  Also, Snickerdoodles!  My one Grandmother was PA Dutch and she always had some great homey food around.  Loved her chicken pot pies too.

Of course Philly cheese steaks and soft pretzels are to die for as well.  My family makes a ton of chow-chow to sell for their church.  I can't stand the stuff, but my kids like it for some reason!!  Yuck![:'(]

At the State Fair of Texas, you can get what is called Funnel Cake, though others call it Indian Fry Bread. Batter squeezed in from a baker's funnel is cooked in oil and here, they top it with confectioner's sugar. Satan get thee behind me .... and push![sm=devil.gif]

indian fry bread is soooo delicious. the cashino thats in the next town over from here has big festivals all the time and they sell tons of it, literally it must add up to tons.

raja19, i am not a big fan of pickled bologna because pork grosses me out a little, but it is hard to think about people never having heard it. it's basically ring bologna soaked in vinegar. its sliced up and usually served with cheese and crackers.

Hmmmm..ya Im not the biggest fan of normal bologna so I think I'd be even less of one with the pickled bologna. But nope never ever heard of it!

Ah, one of the benefits in living all around the US is all the food. Let's see . . . yes, best Mexican food is CA, ohhhh those fish tacos! Memphis, it's gotta be the bbq (sorry Carolina and TX folks), KY, burgoo is okay, mint juleps are nasty, Fazoli's and Long John Silver's and of course, KFC all speak for themselves. The best from KY is "the name of which I cannot speak without getting iDog sued", which is a pie similar to pecan pie with chocolate chips in it named after a famous race the first Sat. in May. Really, I can't say the name because it's trademarked by a tiny bakery who will sue anybody from Southern Living Magazine to churches that put that name in their cookbook. Um, OK, the Indian fry bread, and here in VA it's the apples!
