New York Fries is a popular fast food chain here - they sell really tasty fries, the skin-on, greasy, spicy kind (with malt vinegar!! [:D]). I wonder where the name came from?

How funny!  I've never heard of it, but then I've seen different chains named after NY in Fl. for example.!  And honestly those don't sound like the preferred style of fries here.  We like them French style - Pommes Frittes ([linkhttp://pommesfrites.ws/]http://pommesfrites.ws/[/link])  this is the BEST place in the city for fries.

There is nothing like a New York bagel, but I'm pretty sure they originated in Israel.  I was there many years ago with the Navy and bagels in Israel are nothing like American bagels - they're huge and not so dense, don't look quite as much like a doughnut as ours.

Yeah, you're right - they are Israeli!

I must say that this thread is making me super hungry (as opposed to the other one which made me want to go boozing!)

Yeah, gaylemarie, pasties.  I wasn't sure if they're just a Michigan thing.

Whenever I see "Pasties" advertised, all I can think of is those things strippers wear! [8D]

I lived in Rhode Island for 3 yrs and they had a lot of great local cuisine (coffee milk anyone?) and their own dialect too (cleansers, bubblers, etc.).

Boston... well of course there is the famous clam chowder. I'm not coming up with anything else I'm afraid. To me, though, nothing says Boston like a Dunkin Donuts coffee "regular" - that's cream and 2 sugars.

I'm new to Omaha so I don't know much about local grub yet. There does seem to be something called the pancrepe, a pancake-crepe hybrid. My SO loves them but I hate pancakes so I haven't tried them. Oh, and Omaha is the original birthplace of the Reuben sandwich!

Whats the difference between coffe milk and coffe with milk?
    • Gold Top Dog
I don't think Jones means milk that you can put in coffee.

But I'm not talking about coffee with milk in it... it's milk with coffee flavoring & sugar. Like chocolate milk but coffee flavored.

Ooookaaayyyyy, I live in Dutchie Wonderland, the home of strange foods.  We have Chow Chow (pickled corn salad), pickled lambs tongue (yum!  not), scrapple ( kinda like meatloaf except it's made with pork parts all ground up) Yum!!  Oh then there's Shoo Fly pie, moon pies & the world famous Yoccos Hotdogs.  YUCK!!! ~LOL~

Oh!  I completely forgot the good suff!  Tastykakes!!!!

You know what's funny is Krispy Creme came to Boston, which was much anticipated... we had all heard about how great they were. But within a year the whole franchise bombed, badly. New Englanders are just way too loyal to Dunkies!

In Southern California we have things that are ‘famous” in our area, but NOT because they stared here, they just came here and STAYED. The “Fish Taco”is one of them and some of the best ones are at a chain called “Rubios” that started as a little shack on the beach in Baja Mexico but soon traveled across the border to San Diego and Southern California. These fish tacos are fabulous!!

Also, anyone who has EVER lived or visit Southern CA will probably be familiar with “Roberto#%92s” or “Alberto#%92s” type taco shops. There are a MILLION of them in San Diego and there is nothing better than their carne asada burritos or rolled tacos with guacamole and shredded cheese at 2 in the morning!!  I honestly can#%92t even order Mexican food anywhere in the US other than in California.. the stuff served other places is foreign and completely tasteless to me…

Wow!  That really seems to be the consensus amongst Californians.  Makes me want to get on a plane tonight!
