I said I didn't care about a ring...

ETA: Oh yeah, so how did he give it to you? Did he do anything special?

No, not really special but it was kind of a funny moment, which is fitting because he's a funny guy. [:)]

We had been at his mother's house all afternoon & evening spending time with his mom & stepdad. In the afternoon my SO's brother called and asked him to please come over and pick up some boxes that SO has been storing in his garage... I remember casually wondering what the urgency was all about since the boxes have been there for years but it was just a passing thought. We stayed over for dinner, then played dominoes until 11:30 and finally went home. On the drive home he kept asking me if I'd had fun and repeating how much his family loves me. He was also joking about how horrified I was going to be at the dumb stuff in those boxes, a lot of Star Wars toys and whatnot. I've heard about these boxes of old toys and junk for years.

When we got home he asked me, "So, would you say this has been a night you'll always remember?" I was just like what are you talking about.... He then pulled a little box off a high shelf and said something like "Some things have recently come together for me" or something weird and vague - I can't even really remember, why is it we always forget these moments?! He knelt down and continued to give me this weird meandering mysterious speech, and I was just 100% SURE this was just a rambling joke and he was going to open the box and show me some oddball vintage Yoda figurine or something. Finally he opened the box and explained how he got the ring... I was totally surprised, never saw it coming up until the instant I saw it! [:D]

The ring's absolutely beautiful & so much more special than simply an "expensive ring he bought at the store." Beautiful!

that is such a gorgeous ring, i would care alot about it too if it came with such wonderful connotations. i am so jealous.

dh says platinum is alien metal, it is one of his favorites to work with. you can torch it until its redhot and stick your hand on it as soon as you remove the flame and it won't burn your skin.

major sybomlism in this lovely peice of jewelry?

That really is a great story!  It definitely means more than any ring you could have bought, no matter the price.  It is beautiful!

Off topic...I thought that fact about the platinum not buring your skin was very interesting!  I think I must be the nerdiest person here to find that so cool!

My wife's engagement ring is a one of a kind that we got from her favorite jeweler, who deals primarily in estate jewelry. It is a commissioned piece from 1923. I had the wedding bands cast from 14 ct white gold to match the hatch pattern on the bottom of the engagement ring. Her wedding band has a bend in it so that it will sit right next to the engagement ring on her finger when wearing both.

Your ring looks a lot like my mom's.  Hers was platinum, too.  I believe what you have is late 1930's, early 1940's (my mom was married in July 1940)- the setting is called a "fishtail setting" I think.  Beautiful.

Beautiful - and platinum is supposed to be the best setting available!

If you haven't thought about it, do add a rider to your insurance to cover this ring.  You have to already have either renter's or homeowner's insurance, and must have the ring appraised by a certified jewelry appraiser (doesn't cost much) in order to add it.  I have a one carat solitaire engagement ring that belonged to my mom and I keep it insured even though I don't wear it.  It's value only goes up, and right now it's worth about $5900.  The insurance rider is only about $65.00 per year.  It won't replace the sentimental value, but does cover the financial portion if you lose it or it's stolen.

    Congrats!

It is absolutely beautiful.  Mine is platnum too and it is great.  It doesn't bend out of shape.

Just a warning, get it insured immediately!   Even if you rent, you can still get an insurance rider on it.  Otherwise, if anything happens, lost, stolen, stone falls out, etc. you are out.  I think it costs about $10 - $20 per $1000 appraisal per year.  For example, if the ring is worth $6000, it should cost you about $60 - $120 per year in insurance.  I know the ring is irreplaceable; however, trust me it is worth it!  Your regular insurance doesn't cover it, so you have to ask your agent for a rider...they will know what you mean.

My mom lost the diamond out of her engagement ring twice and didn't have it insured...my dad has completely given up trying to replace it.  On the other hand, my sister lost her's, had it insured and had pictures of it so they were able to recreate it for her.
