    Springfield, MA--UPDATE!!!

Is anyone from there or has anyone visited there?

The person who is interested in Jet lives there. I have heard not to adopt an Am Staff/Pit bull to anyone in the town but that seems a little prejudice to me.

If you live there, what is it like? And if you know the area please PM me so I can ask you about the specific area she is in..

This lady sound super, super nice and responsible but people have really been bashing this town.

I looked at pictures of the houses for sale in Springfield and jeez, they are nice!

Hope this doesnt sound bad, these people I have contacted about doing a home visit have made me nervous. And I wanted to know a little more about the town/area she lived in.

One of the people I contacted said they would "drive by" to see if it was in a good neighborhood or not and if it wasnt, they wouldnt do the home visit. I mean really, how bad can it be?!?

I am from Massachusetts so I've been to & through Springfield a number of times. It definitely has a bad rap... but really it's just like any American factory town that becomes depressed after its major manufacturing companies shut down or abandon the city. That's not to say that nice people with nice homes can't live there! Like anywhere it has its nice neighborhoods and not so nice neighborhoods. The surrounding farmlands are quite beautiful.

I'm about 30 miles from there.  In my opinion, Springfield is like any small city - some good areas, some probably not so good.  I'm not aware of the city having a bad reputation.

Yanke... it may be just a stereotype within Mass, you know how people love to pick on their neighbors. Springfield is the 2nd poorest town in the state after Holyoke. So it has its problems... but like yanke said, it's a small city, not a small town, so you can't make a broad judgement on the whole place.

perhaps there have been issues with dog fighting rings in that area?

I live about 20 mins away.  I agree with what everyone has said.  Small city, same problems as any small city.  Some pretty depressed areas, some not so.  There are some not so great areas that I wouldn't want to live in but every city has them.  If you want, PM me and I will let you know if I know the exact area.  Not sure about the idea of not adopting pit mixes in the area.  Maybe contact the MSPCA or Angell Memorial (big vet hosp in Springfield) and see if anyone there can shed light on that?

agreed, and since agilebs brings up veterinary hosp names- what does their vet reference give you?  I presume this is not their first pet.

All I know about Springfield is I travel thru it when I attend any of the dozens of dog shows at ESE center in West Springfield.  (So, therefore, I know where it is on the map - southwestern MA, near the CT border/Pioneer Valley area)

Well, I lived close by 30 years ago (in Longmeadow) and I rather liked it.  Nice historic town with gracious homes.  So I'm no help, but I wouldn't worry about it so much.

I Live ont he north shore and have driven thru it many times but I hVent really spent muvh time there. There is a Stereotype or general bad impression asJones mentioned btu I can't speak to it's merit. The parts I have dirven through are much more city and a bit run down but many cities have that problem...

    That's what I thought.

I started thinking about it and it cant be much worse than LR.

    Agile-I am Pm'ing you.

Thanks everyone! I told her I would visit some time. To me, it looks like a nice town, I am sure the worst towns in the NE are a lot nicer than the ones here in the south. I wonder what those people would think if they had to come here? Their heads would probably explode!

She never gave me her vet reference. She had a pit bull but it got cancer & died, I think this was over a year ago. I guess she doesnt have the vet info anymore.

That's why the home visit is so important. I cant send him off without doing a HV or having a vet reference....

I don't like that. She would at least remember what town the vet was in and something about the name - esp if the dog had cancer, she'd remember who was treating or advising.  Even if she didn't have a phone number or address, you can search that online if you have a name and town.  THAT ("forgetting" who gave healthcare advice to the dog even 2 years ago) would raise a big red flag to me.

I have only been through there and got off my bus there to meet my friends I was meeting. I didnt spend much time there. but the area I was in didnt look to good (But again it was justa bus stop/station.). It just reminded me of Toornto (my home town/city)> But again I'm from anada and was only there becuase my grayhound bus made its stop for me there. I was going to a small hick town in Mass where the bus didnt go.
