    What a Letter

Doug Patton, a freelance columnist and political speechwriter:

Are we fighting a war on terror or aren't we? Was it or was it not started by Islamic people who brought it to our shores on September 11, 2001?  Were people from all over the world, mostly Americans, not brutally murdered that day, in downtown Manhattan , across the Potomac from our nation's capitol and in a field in Pennsylvania?  Did nearly three thousand men, women and children die a horrible, burning or crushing death that day, or didn't they?

And I'm supposed to care that a copy of the Koran was "desecrated" when an overworked American soldier kicked it or got it wet?  Well, I don't. I don't care at all.

I'll start caring when Osama bin Laden turns himself in and repents for incinerating all those innocent people on 9/11.  I'll care about the Koran when the fanatics in the Middle East start caring about the Holy Bible, the mere possession of which is a crime in Saudi Arabia.

I'll care when Abu Musab al-Zarqawi tells the world he is sorry for hacking off Nick Berg's head while Berg screamed through his gurgling slashed throat.  I'll care when the cowardly so-called "insurgents" in Iraq come out and fight like men instead of disrespecting their own religion by hiding in mosques.

I'll care when the mindless zealots who blow themselves up in search of nirvana care about the innocent children within range of their suicide bombs.  I'll care when the American media stops pretending that their First Amendment liberties are somehow derived from international law instead of the United States Constitution's Bill of Rights.

In the meantime, when I hear a story about a brave marine roughing up an Iraqi terrorist to obtain information, know this: I don't care.

When I see a fuzzy photo of a pile of naked Iraqi prisoners who have been humiliated in what amounts to a college-hazing incident, rest assured that I don't care.  When I see a wounded terrorist get shot in the head when he is told not to move because he might be booby-trapped, you can take it to the bank that I don't care.

When I hear that a prisoner, who was issued a Koran and a prayer mat, and fed "special" food that is paid for by my tax dollars, is complaining that his holy book is being "mishandled," you can absolutely believe in your heart of hearts that I don't care.

And oh, by the way, I've noticed that sometimes it's spelled "Koran" and other times "Quran." Well, Jimmy Crack Corn and ---- you guessed it -- I don't care ! ! ! ! !

Just a question, were all those terrorists living in Iraq after 9/11?

Well if the terrorists were not living in Iraq and Saddam didnt do anything to USA why there are troops there? North Korea is the one making nuclear tests and the people is in worse conditions, Fidel Castro is in the hospital and the citizens are not allowed to get out of the country, easier target if you ask me [;)]

Hey Billy, that reminded me of good ol' Judge Roy Bean's quote... (reprinted here with absolutely NO authority...[:D])

"You have been tried by twelve good men and true, not of your peers but as high above you as heaven is of hell, and they have said you are guilty. Time will pass and seasons will come and go. Spring with its wavin#%92 green grass and heaps of sweet-smellin#%92 flowers on every hill and in every dale. Then sultry Summer, with her shimmerin#%92 heat-waves on the baked horizon. And Fall, with her yeller harvest moon and the hills growin#%92 brown and golden under a sinkin#%92 sun. And finally Winter, with its bitin#%92, whinin#%92 wind, and all the land will be mantled with snow. But you won#%92t be here to see any of ‘em; not by a damn sight, because it#%92s the order of this court that you be took to the nearest tree and hanged by the neck til you#%92re , , , you olive-colored son of a billy goat."

Any judges got the balls to say that anymore??

Iraq had given refuge to suspects, and had, at one time biological and chemical weapons which Saddam had used against the Kurds (if you want links with graphic pics I'll post 'em.)  Also, the crimes against humanity in Iraq were unspeakable.  Also Saddam took a pot shot at "daddy" Bush.

We don't need Cuba.  Heck 1/2 the commonweal of Cuba is making boats out of pickup trucks trying to get to us.

North Korea:  That situation is very precipitous.  The South Koreans are on edge and don't want to do anything that will spark a heated exchange.  After all the North has stockpiled about 30 days supply of weapons, ammo and everything else they need right there at the border.  Tunnels that reach miles into RoK have been discovered, who knows how many tunnels haven't been discovered?  If you want to know what tension feels like, man a tower at the DMZ for a shift.

I think that if the people of the USA wern't so squeemish about the war in Iraq, then north Korea wouldn't be near so bold as they are now.  But people have been complaining about Bush and this war so the people in North Korea are like "Heh, they don't have the guts to do anything to us. It would be political suicide with what the American climate is right now." And it probably would be.
And arn't we supposed to be fighting the war on terrorisim? Not the war on Afganistan, or Iraq, or even the war against Saddam Insane. But if Afanistan or Iraq are being terrorist, then that is who we should and did go after.

The "war on terror" has created far more terrorism throughout the world. It is not working, clearly. The US should recognize this and change its methods, not keep a strategy that is having the total opposite of the desired effect.

I don't know that I agree with that.  When was the last successful ist attack on US soil?

The US is not the world, contrary to what the US often thinks :) Many studies show that terrorism has increased worldwide and US actions are considered directly related.

Spy agencies also say that the war in Iraq increases terrorism threat:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/24/world/middleeast/24terror.html?ex=1316750400&en=da252be85d1b39fa&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

The NIE data, which as now been declassified and can be found here:

    http://noquarter.typepad.com/my_weblog/2006/09/the_facts_behin.html

There is a lot of evidence of this. The Independent and The Guardian have had many good articles about it, as has CommonDreams:

    http://www.commondreams.org/headlines03/0520-02.htm

I also consider many of America's actions, including the invasion and occupation if Iraq to be terror. I don't know what else to call the loss of 650,000+ civilian lives.
