    cholesterol update!

A few weeks ago we were discussing cholesterol. I think aleliza was the OP. I got my results back, and good news! I was down to 188! When i was 12, it was 190. 8 months ago it was 140, and 6 months ago it was 139.  My LDL and Triglycerides were down, and HDL was up ( I don't have the numbers with me) I can't believe it went down that much. My main focus was in my diet...I almost eliminated white bread and white potatoes. I also cut back my sugar intake. i still ate an occassional piece of cake or candy bar, instead of 2 or 3 ( i have VERY high metabolism) I've always been pretty active, but joined a gym to make sure i was very active. I also ate a lot more protein than usual. My main diet staples were meat (mostly chicken and sirloin), cheese, and nuts. In the process i lost about 5 lbs and a few inches...hello size 6!! Anyone else lowered their cholesterol without medicine?

Congratulations!! I do not even know what my cholestrol is :( Supposedly I will in July though. That is when my doctor says he wants a full blood work-up. I think it is because I will be 30 then.

I commend you on your hard work to change your eating habits and getting healthier without using medications. I know how difficult it is.

Wow, great job!!! I have to say, I've never had a patient actually do it with diet alone :) It's hard to change old habits I guess but you are a star!! Keep up the good work, your heart and blood vessels will love it!!

Good for you, Megan.  That's interesting about the white bread and potatoes.  I always thought high cholesterol was caused by eating too many animal products (meat, cheese, eggs, etc.) I wouldn't have thought bread or potatoes would even play a part.

Triglycerides are tied in with higher blood sugar.
I think meat low in fat, like chicken, good cut of beef, turkey..... is not bad.
The key is to not eat too much of the fatty meat.

    That coming from a veggie[:D]
DH has to watch his food intake.

I also am pretty much addicted to fries. At first, i went 2 months without touching a fry. Now, if i want some fries, i get them...i just have them like once a week. I read the south beach diet book, and it was pretty much my basis for my new eating style. The south beach diet was created to lower cholesterol. The book actually recommended eating eggs and low fat bacon every morning for breakfast. I usually eat either that, a protein breakfast bar, or raisin bran.

ottoluv, are you a doctor? I'm in nursing school right now...then off to either PA or nurse practitioner school.

That's great good luck, my boyfriend's a nurse getting his masters right now in nurse anesthesia :) I'm a surgeon (people) hee hee.

That's awesome, i'm VERY interested in surgery. I don't think i could do it though...i have a lot of respect for surgeons. I have also considered nurse anesthesist (sp?) Does he like it?

He LOVES it, great hours, great pay, and the exceitment of the OR can't be beat IMO of course. You will find nurses are in HUGE demand in every field, he was making twice what I did as a resident, it's a great career. I've been encouraging all my younger cousins to go into nursing :)

yes, yes, I was the OP a little while ago with the high cholesterol!  It was 206... so not that high, but high enough for concern considering I am only 24!

I am working on a low cholesterol, low fat diet... but the holidays sort of interfered.  I am also exercising more!
I have either cheerios with fruit or oatmeal in the morning, Im cutting way down on sugar, and eating more fruits and veggies.... eating much more fish... and way less shellfish... switched to fat free half and half (weird, I know...), and eating way less cheese (my most favorite food in the world!  No wonder I have high cholesterol...)

    Ill keep you guys posted!

Yay for you Ridgeback... stellar job!

Oh gosh, I think I still owe you an email!  I'm sorry....life has spun a bit out of control lately.

A pretty painless change you can make is to eat whole grain breads...Sara Lee has some wonderful ones and I'm lucky enough to have the factory, and outlet store, not far from here.  The "bad cholestrol" absolutely is tied into high blood sugar so keeping THAT stable helps to keep the cholestrol in line.

One of my biggest challenges with DH is limiting his meat portions to the size of a deck of cards.....he thinks he's starving with that amount no matter how many extra veggies I pile on his plate.  How the heck did we become a nation of over eaters??  Sigh.....

Glenda, don't worry... I can empathize entirely with life spinning out of control... No worries!

My problem exactly, he makes jokes all the time.
Usual question" Are you teasing me"?

I think he sneakes food when out of town[:D]

Interesting about eliminating white grains... I'll have to read up on how blood sugar affects cholesterol. I do know that dietary cholesterol is found only in animal products... is it that high blood sugar somehow makes it stick around?
    • Gold Top Dog
Erin, I don't know what the sugars do or why, but I do know that every time DH has bloodwork done the blood sugar is implicated in his high triglycerites.  His fasting blood sugar last time was 71 and the doc still wasn't happy so doubled his meds....
