    Serendipity

In the New Year's Eve thread, I had mentioned how, on last New Year's, I performed "Down Under" by Men At Work.

Last night, on an episode of "Scrubs," there was Colin Hayes (the singer) with just a guitar, performing "Overkill."

How's that for a freaky concantenation reaching back 20-something years?

First off, that is the link to the video of the song.

Now, here's a link to a halfway decent definition of serendipity.

Although possibly purely coincidental, it can seem connected that I was talking about singing a Men At Work song and later, last night, get to see Colin Hayes after 20-something years performing, "unplugged", another great hit, "Overkill."

Also, I wonder if this means I could soon be another man at work, i.e., gainfully employed.

    LOVE 80's music [:D]

I was simutaneously in college and starting electrical work in 1983, when "Down Under" was getting big. "Overkill" was the next big hit. Of the original band members, one has died, one went on to be come a teacher, and Colin Hayes, the singer, went on to be a record producer.

I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
    And she said,

"Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

I was about 19, strong as an ox and I knew everything.

Now, I'm old and get a clearer idea every day of how much I don't know.

Thanks, Amy. I still haven't landed a job, yet, though I've had one interview with a city to be an inspector. I have other apps out. The problem is most private companies aren't looking for a master, just apprentices and journeymen. The only advantage of working cheap for this last company is that I'm not asking for more than what I was making, which is top journeyman pay.

I also gathered information today that my former employer is about to make a mistake that could get his company shut down. Mistakes that I was trying to discuss with him and he decided he didn't need me any more. So be it. Business is business and I'll see ya in the funny papers.

Ron, I know we're about the same age - so I'm a fellow Men at Work fan!  I remember how we tried to decipher the lyrics to "Down Under."  It took us forever to figure out what a "vegemite sandwich" was!  I think Colin Hayes has a good voice -- it's too bad he doesn't have more of a solo career now.

Well, these days, he's primarily a record producer. And yes, I do wish he would put out a new album of his own. I loved the tone of guitar that they would use. It was mainly a combination of chorus and reverb and delay in a special effects rack but it had a way of musically describing the expansiveness of Australia. To me, their guitar sound means Australia as much as hearing a dijiredoo (sp?).

Wow at 19 i was skinny (a little bit as Conan O'Brian on "Pale Force") [:D]

I love how they were using the sax in their songs

LOL! It's such a shame you don't get vegemite (or marmite- the much better equivalent) over there- you're missing out! [:D]

I had some vegemite, once. I thought it was good.

"Buying bread from a man in Brussels.
He was 6 foot 4 and full of muscles.
I said, do you speak my language?
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich.

Do you come from the Land down under?"

A lot of people don't like it because it's salty- it might be a bit of an acquired taste.
If you ever have the urge for more, I'd be happy to send some over!  [:)]
