Removing collar at night?

    Removing collar at night?

    Okay...
So, Saturday my DH and I went to this couples babyshower in LA. We live an hour south of LA, and my DH had to park our car in a parking garage to get to the shower. Anywho...the power went out and there was no manual override on the garage gate. So, we were stuck in LA for the evening. We called the neighbors to ask them to go to our house and care for Marley (which luckily they were there and were willing to do). We told them to just crate him for the evening, and let him out in the morning.

Here comes the question...I always take off Marley's collar at night. I asked DH if he thought they would take his collar off. He said I was the only weirdo who took off my dog's collar at night. Are there any other weirdo's here? [sm=biggrin.gif]

Nope, you're not! [:)] I take my boys' collars off anytime they go in their crates (which is during the day) and at night while they sleep. I've heard that the collars can get caught up on their crates and they could be strangled, so I'm a stickler for that. Otherwise, I think it's just more comfortable for them to sleep without collars.

Gracie only gets a collar on when we go outside or for a ride/walk somewhere.  Otherwise, she's nekkid!
I think if someone asked me to take care of their dog, I would have left the collar on and done exactly as instructed.  If the owner said take it off, I would.  If they didn't, I wouldn't.  (we're talking flat nylon/leather buckle/snap collars - no dog should be left unattended with a choke, prong, or other training collars on.)

For about the first six months, I took Zoey's collar off whenever she went into her crate. I too worried about her catching it on the inside of her crate somewhere.  She's very calm in her crate now, so I don't have the same worries. Marleysmom, I  think you'll find that a lot of people do as you do.  In fact, taking off a young pup's collar is now common practice among my friends/family members, due to the tragic hanging death of my brother/sister-in-laws' 10 week old Bischon.

*raising hand* I'm a weirdo! Rupert only wears his collar to go out.

You're not a weirdo!  I take Sam's collar off while he's milling about and massage his neck when I do take it off.  Can you imagine having to wear a turtleneck for days... with that fabric rubbin' all over your neck?!  It'd irritate me, that's for sure. [:D]

Another weirdo here. My dogs only wear collars if we're leaving the house/yard. Otherwise they're naked all the time.

    <----------  Is also a weirdo  [:D]

But don't you worry they will escape accidentally and be out there in the big bad world without ID?  I think you're kinda darned if you do, darned if you don't!  I'm not sure what to do!

I take my dog's collar off everytime I crate him.  I have heard it from friends that have had tragedies of their dog's collar catching on something and it choking them and I have read it in books to always take the collar off in the crate.

Lana only wears a colar when going out.  When we're home, she doesn't have it on at all.

Yup, I always like to take  the dogs collars off at night. I think it makes them more comfortable, and plus they don't jingle around. I also like to keep the fur on their necks smooth, and if they have a collar on all the time, it will make it stand up. I don't know if anyone else does this, but I am constantly adjusting the collar on their necks during the day, so that it's on the top of the fur, and doesn't dig down into the fur, and be kinda 'buried' ( they have medium length fur). That's just something that annoys me [;)] lol

Even though Cassidy doesn't sleep in a crate, she always gets her collar off at night. I used to take Mirelle's collar off when she was sleeping too, but now that she doesn't sleep in a crate, I have to leave it on. Because I have her tethered at night, so her collar stays on [&:] But whenever she is in her crate I take it off, and I also try to take it off some during the day.

Aha! I am NOT the only weirdo! [sm=rofl.gif] I will have to show this to DH.

I take the collars off about 50% of the time.
I'm concerned about the collars catching on something, but I'm also concerned about the potential of an emergency at our home when we are not there and the dogs not having ID.
I guess microchipping would solve that, though.

The other reason to keep the collar on would be laziness on my part, I guess!    My female Weim tends to get us up early in the a.m. for a trip outside.   She roams the yard for a good long time if I don't have her on an expansion lead to pull her back inside to bed.   In my sleepy state, I always seem to get to the porch door and have to return for the collar!

Please take collars off when ever they are crated, Trixie got her collarr caught on the crate and if I wasn't home she would of hung herself because she panicked and was twisting and pulling. And I thought I took the collar off.

Jan Trixie was 7 at the time and very calm in her crate.
