• mrstjohnson Posted : 12/15/2006 11:45:54 AM It's not that he drives my mom nuts in general (they are very very happily married for over 40 years) but my dad worked 50 hours a week for 45 years and suddenly he thinks he will now be content doing nothing, nope after about a week he is going to declare that he is bored (we actually have a pool going).  Also, my mom has a routine that has been in place for a very long time.  Knowing my Dad he is going to want to change that routine, "help" out, perfect it, etc.  That is what is going to drive her nuts.  0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. • marty_ga Posted : 12/15/2006 12:09:29 PM With me, it's more that he will be on a perpetual vacation, and I get more work (this is the guy who doesn't even know how to use the can opener).  He does like to do woodworking and is looking forward to doing more of it, but refuses to clean up his mess in the garage, so it tracks through the house.  I have already talked to him about being better with regular vacuuming out there, but he just doesn't get it.  Then he gets mad when I blow up...sigh. • willowchow Posted : 12/15/2006 3:20:11 PM I can understand.  My FIL was sort of lost when he retired.  He was used to working all day and had worked even multiple jobs at some points in his life.  So, having nothing to do really sort of depressed him.  But, then he got a new routine down and started helping out with a friends business and things fell into place.   I know I would be going crazy if DH and I had to sit in the house together all day every day.  I love him very much but I've always been very independent and used to him being busy.  So, I got into a routine and sometimes when that routine gets broken I feel all out of sorts. 0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. My DH retired in '95 and was soon driving himself nuts.  So he did substitute teaching K thru 12 in four different (but close) cities. After a couple of years of that, he went back to work as a retired anuitant, meaning he could work 50%.  Then, the state made him an offer he couldn't refuse - apparently they have a very hard time finding judges as skilled as he is in doing disability hearings - so he came out of retirement for 9 years and is now doing this whole thing again.[] Whatever floats his little boat.   Joyce 0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. • tacran Posted : 12/17/2006 3:33:09 AM I wish I had some helpful advice, but I'm afraid all I can do is say I understand your concern!  I already know my DH will be one of those guys who doesn't use his retirement all that productively -- when he's home from work due to a sick day or whatever, he'll call me at work more than once:  "Hi, what are you doing?"  Ummmm, trying to work, so I can't talk right now!!  He's not very good at finding projects on his own to do; he wastes a lot of time when he's home.   Some dear friends of ours are struggling with this big time.  The man was in sales for 40+ years and on the road a lot.  The woman has been very independent, fully involved in hobbies and whatnot during his absences.  Now he's home, and he no longer has an audience for his "salesman personality" so he follows her around all day talking to her.  Honestly, she's about to jump off a bridge! 0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available.
