    How many Non-Christians Celebrate Xmas?

Just curious if anyone sets up a tree and has Santa gifts but aren't Christians.

I read an interesting article in the paper last week where a Toys for Tots charity (collects and distributes Christmas toys for needy children) refused a donation from a manufacturer of 4,000 talking Jesus dolls. Their explaination was that they thought these particular dolls may be offensive and/or inappropriate for some of the families that will be using the charity. So I would assume that some of the families that give gifts at Christmas are not all of the Christian faith, otherwise a religious item would be appropriate. There was a bit of a backlash and the charity ended up changing their mind.

I don't know about non-Christians, but I personally as a Christian find the idea of a talking Jesus doll offensive....

Offensive, like a bobble head Pope?

We sure do...we do a tree and gifts and all that. Santa is THE MAN around here. Not Christian...neither is my hubby tho he's a believer in the most basic sense. We both used to attend Church as kids...now we don't. It's a tradition I grew up with so I continue it...we never had a big Jesus vibe in my house growing up....more a family and giving and food vibe...and Santa. [;)I also do Halloween tho I'm not Pagan, Thanksgiving tho I'm neither a Pilgrim or Native American decendant,  and I DON'T do Kwaanza even tho I am half Black. If there's a day off, gift, food, or chance to dress up like a crazy person and drink "I'M THERE DUDE!"....

Oh I forgot one...we also do Festivus...tho DH has NOT agreed to the metal pole yet. I do have another use for the pole with which I think I could change his mind however! [sm=biggrin.gif]  [sm=devil.gif]

The Pope doesn't mean much to me (God bless him), and he makes his own rules about what's allowed regarding his image. But I sure don't think Jesus is a figure to be made into dolls (though some of my faith unfortunately don't see it that way, I know). He isn't Just Another Guy to me. Not even a Really Neat Guy who could be made into an action figure, like Orlando Bloom or Harrison Ford.

Toys for Tots gives out toys for the holiday season.  They mainly give out toys so that no child feels unloved during this season. With many of the children, it is all about Santa not the birth of Christ.

Our house has way too many holidays during December. We have our wedding anniversary on the 3rd, Sebastian's birthday on the 5th, Hanukkah is on the 15th this year and  then we have Christmas. I have celebrated Hanukkah and Christmas since birth. My mom is Orthodox Jew and my father is Episcopalian. I am jewish and my husband is christian but not a practicing one.  We do make sure the children understand why we celebrate both holidays though. Every year, we read to them the history behind  each holiday.

What about nativity scenes? with them Jesus's image and Mary and Joseph are made into images. I am not comfortable with the idea of Jesus dolls, but am perfectly comfortable with nativity scenes.

Weird, is like asking who celebrates Hanukkah without being Jewish

naaah Xmas is way too commercialized in the USA to be compared.

I do know some people mind that.

Personally I find the giving spirit and family gatherings enough reason to get jiggy with and enjoy Xmas.

There are any number of Christians who in fact celebrate Hanukkah because they are married to a Jewish person, or are of parents of differing religions.  I didn't find it an odd question at all......

While I enjoy many nativities, I'm not real keen on the light up plastic figures......

Yep, me too.  I'm trying to imagine it done in a really nice way with some wonderful tape of a simple prayer or something....but, no, I just can't see it being anything but tacky.

I have celebrated Hanukkah (Chanukah) with my Jewish friends on many occassions. I have also been know to sit in a few Synagogues on Saturday mornings. Fascinating experience!

I celebrated Hannukah with an ex-boyfriend of mine and I'm not Jewish. I also celebrate Christmas every year even though I don't really consider myself Christian. I didn't grow up with religion in my life and I'm not baptized (the looks I get when I tell people that are amazing. Especially when I was younger. The comments were/are worse). Just as someone else said, it's more of a traditional thing with my family. I believe in God and in Jesus, but in no means am I religious person. I've hardly ever been in a church unless for a wedding or a funeral.

I'm not Christian and I celebrate Christmas. I think it is not just a Christian holiday, it really depends on how you celebrate it... for Christians obviously it is a religious holiday about the birth of Christ, but for other people it's a winter festival about giving, and I see nothing wrong with that. As for talking Jesus dolls... I don't know about offensive but for me or my future children they would certainly be an odd present. I'd imagine that there would be plenty of Christian churches out there that have toy drives and would appreciate such a donation.
