I don't know what to think about this one...I guess they aren't the only city around the USA to do something similar...
I just wish as much effort time and resources would be expended on getting along...

I agree with you there Gina.  Drastic measures for drastic times I guess...
    • Gold Top Dog
    That does seem pretty drastic.

I heard something about Bush approving an 800 mile fence to "protect" the border. First, I don't see how that's going to help. People will find a way over or under the fence. And second, why can't we just use the money on finding an actual solution to the problem?

"In a series of 6-0 votes, the council members without discussion approved fines for landlords who rent to illegal immigrants, and allowed local authorities to screen suspects in police custody to see if they are in the country illegally."

I don't think this is drastic at all.  I wish this would happen where I live.  We have a TON of illegals here.  I have no problem with immigrants, but I do have a problem with people breaking the law to get here.

    I agree. Totally.
AND, I don't see how this is turned into a racist matter.
I don't care where the illegal immigrants come from. If they're illegal, then it's...ILLEGAL. It's not about racism to me.

I think the racism perhaps arises when you try to make using a native language aside from English on signs or advertisements illegal...such as they have done.

i dont necessarily have a problem with illegal immigrants. many of them contribute more to our society than a lot of the people who were born in this country.

    • Gold Top Dog
On of the biggest problems I see is this will make it harder for the people who are here legaly to be reconized as members of their community.

This will be used to unfairly racially profile people...no doubt. All they need is a description of "Hispanic Male" and there's carte blanche to do the above to every Latino you meet. Tho of course they will be sued out their hineys if they try that with the wrong person.

Very similar to the law about sagging pants they tried to pass earlier in or around Dallas. They wouldn't be stopping fat white men who expose their butt cracks...we all know who they'd be stopping.

All I see coming is a bunch of lawsuits, yet more waste of my money....and everyone else's.

I should have clarifyed that to me, the illegal immigrant "issue" is not about racism. I cannot, however, speak for anyone else.
    Sorry.

exactly Xebby...NO ONE here should be assumed to be illegal because of a name or ethnicity...but that is exactly what will happen. Illegal until proven legal.

Drawing more lines when there should be a better way...

When my grandfather on my dad's side came here, he realized that to succeed here, he would need to learn English.  He would not let his children speak anything but.  So, what happened?  His first generation American kids became: an interior designer, a lawyer, a business owner, a CPA, and a housewife (with two daughters who went to ivy league schools).  Not bad.   If they had bilingual education in those days, they would probably have ended up working at McD's speaking Lithuanian.  Frankly, I think he made the right choice.

    I DO agree with this.

    Spiritdogs...

I'm sorry I do not agree. I think if you want to advertise in both English and Spanish you should be allowed to. If you want to write a sign for your garage sale in Spanish Russian or Vietnamese you should be allowed to....if you want to put a Vietnamese sign on your church...you should be allowed to.

Cultures cluster together and they always have, and they always will. If they start businesses within those clusters and they have entire strip malls in Vietnamese with english along the bottom, so what?. No one stops you or I from shopping there. I personally think English is in far greater danger of being "lost forever as a language" via AMERICAN youth born here speaking their slang and using their text messaging than any group of non English speakers.

    But hey...that's just me.

I'm with you, Gina.  If all the illegals left CA, the entire economy of the state would collapse and I think most of us that live here know that. The "anti illegals" would be the first ones screaming about having to pay $6 for a head of lettuce. Job require English? Fine ... speak it there.  Off the job, you should be able to speak/read/write etc. in whatever language you want.
