Veterinary assistant certificate

    Veterinary assistant certificate

I#%92ve been thinking really hard about this.  I could go to a vet tech program and get my vet assistant certificate in 31 weeks.  I worked as a tech without the certificate and can do most of what those with the certificate can do, I just can#%92t handle the controlled drugs, no big deal, I just get paid much less.

Now if I have the certificate I can work almost anywhere and get paid more than double of what I made before.  I#%92ve been in college for 5 years and have about one and a half years to go.  I#%92ve always loved my job as a tech but a lot of vets will not hirer me because I don#%92t have that certificate even though I have over a year of experience as a tech.

I do not want to give up on the college I already completed to do this but I thought maybe I could take off a semester, get the certificate, work as a tech, doing what I love, and be a part time student till I get my bachelors degree then maybe go to vet school, if I can get in.

    I wish school wasn#%92t so confusing…

I don't know about quitting college.
I quit college for a while with the intention of going back, before I knew what happened I was married and never made it back. Think long and hard about this.[;)]

No, I would not quit college but I can't do both at the same time.  I did take a semester off of college a year or so ago and then went back because there was nothing for me without a degree.  I love being a vet tech but the pay is so low and without the certificate it's hard for me to find a job anywere.

I also need the experance to get into vet school so either way I'm going to have to do some work in a related field.  I just enjoy working with animals and even if I was a tech for the reast of my life I would be happy.

Well, if you are certain you are going back then go for the certificate, when you are finished you can go back to college and like you said make more money working as a certified vet tech. That could actually help your financial situation when it comes to getting loans, you won't have to borrow as much money, cause you make more. I certainly borrowed my way through my college time[:@]

I suppose its my area, on top of the hurricane.  I got the job as a vet tech at the humane society no problem.  Im a quick learner... the vets all loved me in no time!  I quit, for various undisclosed reasons, BUT I had planned on getting a job at a vet.  I didnt, a property came about which is my major goal in life.  Anyway, Im rambling, I guess I want to say, put yourself above the rest.  Be better.  Dont be the one saying I can do it but....

ya know?? Cause you may be way better than that next guy with that piece of paper but they get your job.  Good luck!!![:)]

I was looking over the classes required for an associate in veterinary science and they seen like a piece of cake to me.  I basically got on the job training and know most of what it takes to get through those classes.  I'm sure I'll still have to work at it but I'll at least be a few steps ahead of everyone else.  This seems to be more of the direction I want to go anyway and it's accreted so these credits I earn will transfer and I can also transfer in some of the credits I already earned, which judging by their classes required for the degree I#%92m already more than half way done.  To add to that I can still get the same finical aid I#%92m receiving now.  After looking through everything, I decided to go even further than a certificate and get a degree in animal science.

I'm at the point where I am tiered of going one semester after another to a 5 year college without any direction of where I'm headed.  With a degree in Vet Science, I don#%92t  have to work for a vet clinic I will be qualified to work for zoos, laboratories, and other such related fields.  I would just need to take a placement test when I am done and that will help place me with a job.  I don#%92t know why I didn#%92t think of this before; it#%92s exactly what I want to do.  I can#%92t believe I was a full time student for 5 years and never gave this a thought.

On Friday I have an appointment to meet with an advisor, I have a million questions to ask.  Come Friday afternoon I should know if this is what I want to do.

    Well Greg,
If there is anything I can tell you about working with animals is that it#%92s not an easy job.  You will get peed on, pooped on, spat upon and every kind of fluid that comes from a living thing will end up on you somehow at sometime.  Then there is the cleaning, lots and lots of smelly cleaning.  Then there are the teeth, you will have to watch out for the sharp teeth and claws.  The hardest part I found being a tech was dealing with my emotions.  It#%92s not easy watching an animal being euthanized, especially if you get attached to it.  You have to be alert at all times, if the vet ask for a pair of hemostats you better know exactly what type he is asking for and what size, there is no time to second guess yourself when an animals life is on the line.

I have worked with techs that just could not do the job.  They did not like the sight of blood and guts or could not keep up with the instructions.  It#%92s not a job for everyone so you better know exactly what you#%92re getting yourself into.  On the other hand I love it, I love seeing my hard work pay off.  When I see a dog walk out the clinic that came in almost dead it is such a wonderful feeling.

Amanda, it sounds to me like you're going to do just great no matter which path you decide to take.  Good luck!

Thanks, I have been thinking alot about all those things ad I agree, with you, but I think I could do it. The things you mentioned with practice i think I would be able to accomplish. Sure it wouldn't be the most pleasent thing getting pead on, or other things, but it wouldn't matter. Thanks for the advice.

No matter how messy the job is I, I just love working with animals.  The reward is more then worth the effort put into it.

Thanks, that really does mean a lot to me. [:)]

Tomorrow is my meeting with an advisor.  I feel like I#%92m starting
college all over again for the 4th time now.  I have copies of my transcripts and a notepad with questions on it.  I went and bought some new clothing just so I can look nice just incase I meet anyone important.  My Dad said he would go with me, when it comes to dealing with people and getting things straightened out he#%92s the one who I trust (and probably the one who will be paying for most of it).  I kind of see this as my chance to finally get this college thing right so I want everything to go well.

Don't feel bad about taking your time figuring out exactly what you want to do.  DH had already put 20 years in the Navy and retired before he made that decision and today he's a judge.  I, on the other hand, have not figured that one out yet.[:D]
