Petland is a pet store that sells puppies. They buy puppies from what we call puppy mills (not sure if you are familiar with that term) but a puppy mill is pretty much where they produce mass quanities of puppies with no concern for their health, well being or happiness. A lot of the dogs who are the breeders at puppy mills are never, ever touched. They are not treated as living beings with feelings but are treated as possessions there to make them money. A lot of times puppy mills have horrible living conditions for the dogs as well. Puppy mill dogs are treated horribly and petland buys their dogs from puppy mills.

It's also a pet store, meaning they sell other animals such as birds and mice and stuff like that, plus pet products. I've gone there several times but it really is sad the way they sell puppies there [:(]  AKC stands for the American Kennel Club, a large registry for purebred dogs. They have a lot of shows. To learn more about that you can do a search for "AKC", and go to their website.

I hate to see the way the puppies are kept in those small cages on the wire floors too.  I feel so bad for them.[&o]  It has to be uncomfortable.

I hate Petland, it is such a sad place.  Petland buys their puppies from the Hunte Corp- a broker who supplies them with dogs from puppymills.  Petland sells many other animals, and the cages for the small animals and birds are left open on the top- so people can touch them and handle them.  It's a very horrible store.

Along with what others have said, in order to sell a 6 week old puppy, they must pull them from mom at about 4 weeks, when they should be with mom at least 2 months to 10 weeks, to learn proper socialization and doggy manners. There is care and time in that which is not evident in a puppy mill. Part of the reason it costs a good chunk of money from a legitimate breeder is the time involved. Plus, pet stores do not have a take back policy and do not guarantee the health of some of their dogs. And the dams are bred constantly. This results in a worn-out dam and sickly litters. As well as horrid living conditions. For the puppy mill to make a profit, they must mass-produce and there are too many dogs for them to handle properly. And yet, Petland is still going to charge legitimate breeder price, or higher, without producing health certs. And the AKC wants to join up with them in getting pet store puppy buyers to AKC register their pets. Not because the pets are actually AKC quality but because the AKC wants more money. IMHO, AKC has lost any respect I could have for them. Hunte Corp., a huge puppy mill is the primary supplier for Petland.

What value does an AKC reg have now?

We don't have a Petland here in Newfoundland, but we have a Pets Unlimited. They get their puppies from a mill too.It is so sad.My mom's friend's friend bought a pug from them and ended up giving the pug to my mom's friend, because he was sick and had keenl cough,a hernia, was allergic to several things...etc.She now is spending lots and lots of money on vet bills.

I hate puppy mills and have NO respect for anyone who supports them!

In ireland the irish kennel club forbid puppies being used as prises in raffles, sold in auctions and also sold on the open market, as a result we do not have any pups in petshops. The petshops will advertise (for free) any litters available from regular customers of the shop.Im not saying its perfect, but at least the prospective buyers get to see whare the pups come from. Also, interestingly, both the IKC and most prtshops will strongly advise that potential buyers see one or both parents with the pups.It sounds common sense, but, common sense is not so common around the world!!!!
