    Irresponsible people...ugh!

Yesterday, before spending far too much money at Home Depot, Brett and I stopped at Petsmart to look at fish. Well, that was my excuse...I really wanted to see the cats available for adoption.[:D] While standing by the cats, I was quickly annoyed by a mom and several of her annoying children. The young girl, probably 9 or 10 years old, was knocking on the glass to get the attention of three kittens who were asleep in their litter box. Her older sister, the loudest, most obnoxious teenager on the planet, did the same. She then made some stupid comment like, "The paper says they're litter box trained. That must mean they sleep in their litter box." So yeah, they really knew nothing about cats other than they meow and look cute. By the time I started reading the info sheets, the entire family had crowded up the area. So, as the mom kind of wanders away, the youger girl calls for an employee to come to the adoption center because she wants a kitten, and when her mom returned, she didn't even tell the kid, "No, you can't have a cat." She said, "You better get one you like. We already had to get rid of one dog." Now, I didn't hear that part, but Brett did. Can you say red flag?!!?! Do not adopt to these people! Unfortunately, representatives from the shelter weren't at the store, so they couldn't screen potential adopters, and most employees there are indifferent, so there's no telling who can pick up an animal in an impulse adoption. Our rescue group does bring cats there during adoption days, but NO ONE can EVER leave with an animal that very day...potential adopters have to be screened, vet records have to be checked,  homes have to be visited, etc. The humane society in our area has a similar protocal so I know their cats aren't flying out of the Petsmart either. Unfortunately, the shetler can't have someone there all the time, so whoever comes in can adopt, even though they do have to sign a contract.

By this point, I had already told Brett, "That family DOES NOT need an animal. It'll end up with a worse life than it had before." Then he told me the "getting rid of the dog" thing, and I prayed they didn't adopt one of those poor kittens so I stopped one of the employees and distracted her lol. I don't know if the family left with a cat or not, but I pray they didn't.

After that incident, we were on our way out when we saw a sign that read: Free to good home--Fancy Rat, Black Russian Hamster. The rat was already taken, but I inquired about the hamster. The employee informed me that he was mean and bullied his cage mates (duh, if you have 400 hamsters in one spot, someone is bound to get annoyed), and I said, "I'll take him." I haven't had any problems with him so far, but he's been so occupied tunneling through his Carefresh bedding that he hasn't even run in his wheel yet. We had another dwarf hamster for four years, and I had kept all of his old stuff so it was only a matter of fixing up his cage and giving him a name, Steve. [;)]

A definite yay for the hamster, but I can't believe the Petsmart there lets the shelter just set up the cats and leave them. We do have one area in the Petsmart here where cats are all the time that is kept by a rescue group, and although they are not there all the time, someone from the group is there a good amount of the time. Plus, if you want to adopt, you have to fill out their paperwork and wait for them to look over it. I'm not sure which group it is anymore, as there used to be two, and one left, but one of the two was extremely nitpicky. The shelter Max is from also brings cats in on Friday nights and Saturdays, but the regular adoption rules still apply. They aren't too strict, but they do call your vet if  have/ have had other pets, and if not they require references. And, at least I know this is the policy with the dogs, if a potential adopter just seems shady, they aren't going to get anything. The people holding the dogs will let the person in charge know if something seems wrong about a potential adopter, and I assume they do the same over with the cats.

Ok I have to see a pic of Steve. Our Teddy Bear Hampster we got is now named Spinny Minney. (yeah  my daughter named her)

I hate when people put "Free to Good Home" for kittens. I drove by 3 today. I would love to stop, but I know the shelter is full.

Do you need me to modify your signature photo? [:D]

Yay for Steve the hamster!  I really hope those people didn't get a kitten.  That's all they need.

Angeltrudelle- I'm not being nit picky, but I thought you might like to know: there's no such thing as a teddy bear hamster.  A "teddy bear" is a Syrian hamster.  I only recently found that out myself when I was researching proper care of hamsters.

LOL! I didn't even think of that! I'll include the only pic I was able to get of Compton-@ $$ Steve (he's gangsta, you know). He's been buried under his Carefresh for so long that I had to make sure he was still alive.

Good news about the crazy family who tried to get a cat...they didn't. *phew* We went back to Petsmart today for some fish, so I checked the cat area, and all the same ones that were there yesterday were still there today. Hopefully, if they filled out an application, they were stupid enough to put that they got rid of their dog. There's a section on the application that asks if you have or had any other pets and what happened to them. Maybe they're too stupid to be deceptive. *shrugs*

Meanwhile, Brown is ridiculously obsessed with the new hamster. I think I'm the only person whose pets have pets lol. Brown obsessed over our old hamster too, and he spent hours staring at the cage waiting for a peak at the hamster. When I took out all the old hamster stuff, Brown freaked! He started panting and pacing up and down and driving me nuts. Then, when he saw the hamster, he ran back and forth up and down the living room until I put the cage on the floor for him to stare into the cage. Even now, he's still staring at the cage, waiting for Steve to pop up. Btw, here's a picture of Steve.

Awww!  Steve looks a lot like my Tyson.  My dog Cheyenne is obsessed with Tyson the hamster as well.  I thought I was the only one with a dog who had a pet.[;)]

lol...yay for Steve.  Congratulations on the new addition.  I am glad that family did not get the kitten.

It irritates the heck out of me when people think of animals as just things to get and when the newness has worn off to get rid off.  I have been cussed out many times for telling people they don't need a live animal of any kind, that if all they want is to say I have a ___ then get it in a stuffed animal.

You know, I can think of a worse scenario with the Ignorant Family:

They get a kitten AND the hamster.

I like rats and hamsters, but Sofia would eat them!
