Told I was getting promotion, but . . .

    Told I was getting promotion, but . . .

This is long, but I think it's all neccessary details in order to hopefully help me. Thanks guys!

A few weeks back, my entire department got moved around and most of changed supervisors. When I met with my old supervisor, who was telling me who I would now be reporting too, he said it was a good thing and that it would present growth opportunities. Then he said, in a low voice, that my name was "next on the list" of being promoted to a Rep II. I didn't know what that meant and he said it meant a title change and a raise. Since he didn't say I had it, I didn't get all excited. He continued by listing all of the reasons of why I "would be" getting it. He said it just needed to be approved. I didn't ask questions because my thoughts were still occupied with my new supervisor and because he hadn't said I was getting it so I didn't want to make too much of it.

When I came out of the office and went back to my desk, my team lead came up to me and said, "So did you get any good news?" with this huge smile on her face. I said, "No." and just told her who I would now be under. She then pressed at it and said, "You didn't get good news? He didn't say ANYTHING else to you?" Then I mentioned the promotion, but that he hadn't made it sound to clear. She then says, "Girl! You got it! Congratulations! That's a huge thing! They don't just hand that promotion out!" Then she explained what the actual title change would mean. So I got a little bit excited. I reiterated to her that he hadn't said that I had it.

Well, later that day, my old supervisor walks by and gives me more details about it. I didn't bring it up, he did. He just started telling me what it was and so forth. At this point, I probably should've asked for more clarification about if I would really be getting it, but I didn't know how to ask. The next day, my lead came back up to me and totally changed her tune. She said that he had made it sound like to her that it was already in the bag for me, but that if he didn't tell me when it would go into effect, that I would probably never see it. She said there were people here that have been here for years that have never gotten it. She said he should've never mentioned it to me at all unless I was definitely gonna get it. I was thinking the same thing.

So I left it alone. A week has passed and this last Saturday, when I was hear working overtime, one of my co-workers didn't want to make some phone calls and told my old supervisor (who is still someone that I semi-report too) that he didn't want to do it and my old supervisor looks at me and says, "With that new title, comes great responsiblity", insinuating that I would have to make the calls. That's not a problem. I don't mind making the calls, but what was the reference to the new title that I DO NOT have? It confused me even more and he had already walked away.

I just want to know if I'm getting it or not. I don't know how to ask about it. What do I say? Should I say anything? Plus, I'm no longer under him and my lead says that that's probably why I won't be getting it now. She said that all he had to do was hand it over to our head manager for approval, but now that I'm not under him, it would have to be my current supervisor to push it through and "fight for me", as my lead says. She said that since my new supervisor doesn't know me and what I do, she most likely won't consider it a priority and won't do it.

I feel  . . .stupid in a way for even getting at all excited about it and then I feel irritated that my old sup would even say something to me about it if it wasn't for sure. Any advice on how to handle this or if I should just leave it alone? I just want to know! [:)] I just want to know if I should expect it or not.

No one should say you've gotten a promotion or it's in the works if it's not going to happen.  Granted these things can take time, but you have every right to go first back to the old supe and ask if he still has access to any details about the promotion he informed you of.

Take a few minutes and outline who told you what very briefly and in a bulleted list.  You can talk to the old supe and the new supe - one of them should have some detail for you.

Your attitude is right - you don't want to be confrontational - just seeking clarification.

However, if there is a lot of back pedaling, I might consider talking to your HR rep.  No one should dangle a carrot like that in front of you with no intention of following through.

It is POSSIBLE, that the old supe started paperwork and someone or something has stalled it - I think it makes most sense to start with him.  Remind him of the recent comment about the new title and say you've heard nothing more officially since that first conversation, so you are curious.

Good luck - let me know what happens!  What industry is your employer in, btw - just curious!

I feel bad for you Ash,,,I kind of know what your going thru. And I really don't have any answers for you,,,I've no experience myself in this sort of thing. I do though, want to say that I have been thru things with my son and his company,,,him waiting to hear about promotions,,, them mentioning titles and new responsibilities to him,,,and  almost never seeing them happen.  He too doesn't feel like he should press it or ask.    I guess I don't blame him either.   But I have come to realize over the years...that companies really just don't care about their employees...often.   You can be hard working, dedicated, know you job and do it...etc etc......and it just doesn't seem to matter.  Keep that in mind so that you don't get hurt.
I too would see if you  could contact your HR person and see just what MIGHT or MIGHT NOT be happening with your job.  You have a right to know, especially since "things" were mentioned to you.  GOOD LUCK!

I would ask your old sup about it. Not about whether you have the promotion, just what it entails and when you could possibly know the decision.
