Sore Paws

    Sore Paws

Bailey has bloody sores on the insides of both of her back paws.  I knew of one spot on one paw but just now she was running through the yard and started yelping but kept running.  I thought she may have stepped on a nail as we just got a new roof and they were everywhere.  Weve gotten most Im sure but its possible.  I looked and both paws have these sores on each side of the big pad in the middle.

She is 30 pounds and I just gave her a 25mg pill of Benadryl.  Im scared.  I shouldnt be worried about giving her that Benadryl right?  I need reassurance that that was okay...  I dunno I kinda freak out about this stuff.  If she goes to sleep b/c it makes her drowsy is there any risk with that?  Just let her sleep?

Whats up with her paws?  I will take her to the vet tomorrow but for now is there anything else I can do?

    Thanks guys.

I wouldn't worry about the benedryl.  I'm not sure if thats a standard pill size or not since I dont have any here right now, but my parents dog was about 40 lbs and worked up a tolerance to the point where she could get a whole "human-sized" pill, as per the vet, in order to calm her down.  It did make her sleepy, though, but that was the desired effect.

I'm not sure about the sores, I just posted something this afternoon in the illness section about the effects of aloe from the ASPCA website, so I'm not even sure if I would recommend that unless you knew Bailey wouldn't lick at it and ingest it.

    Good Luck! :)

That's a perfect dose of Benadryl. We were at the vet two weeks ago and they said 1mg per pound. She may get a little drowsy, but I doubt it. Odin is 55 lbs and we gave him 50mg twice a day for a couple of days and he just got a little groggy.

As far as her paws, I'd clean them with a washcloth and put hydrogen peroxide or alcohol (the h.p. won't sting) on them. She probably wouldn't let you put a bandaid on, but just try and keep them clean, so they don't get infected. Hope she feels better soon!!

Thanks guys!  The benadryl didnt seem to phase her... Im just worried about the sores... will check it out tomorrow at the vet.  I feel bad for her, although she doesnt seem to mind it now.... Im glad its not bothering her, but we need to get it taken care of.

    Hi Amy.

How are Bailey's pooties doing? What was wrong??

This morning they were dark spots (kinda scabbed over looking)... just looking a lot better... but I called the vet and told them all about it and asked if they thought I should bring her in.  They said to wait because she may have stepped on something.  I was hesitant, but went ahead and made an appointment for Monday anyway.  I know they were only open for a few hours today so maybe she was busy and the fact that it sounded better made Monday a better option.  I dont care as long as it doesnt seem to be bothering her.  Last night it was sort of oozing, pink flesh looking and a little bloody.  Now its kinda like it dried up and better...

I do just want them to look at it and tell me if it was something she stepped on and will just heal or I think Ive heard something about allergies causing that, but I could be wrong.  And if she stepped on something I dont think it would have gotten both paws.

Are the sores in the same area on each paw that's affected, and do the sores look similar to each other?  My dog used to get sores on his pads, kind of like a flat scrape, as if you'd pulled off a ring tab of skin (yuk!)  It was from hard running, and quick turns.  Once I started limiting the speed of his free running a bit, the problem completely went away.  I don't know if this could be anything like what happened to your dog?

I hope the vet can get him sorted out for you!

This most likely isn't your problem but it's worth posting because if it is the problem it's not likely that anyone will realize it:

If ashes (generally wood ash) become mixed with water, lye is created. (This plus fat is how early soap was made.) If the dog (or kid, or you) step in or play in these damp or wet ashes they can burn you from light burns to taking the skin off in layers (looks like a multi-layered sunburn). This most often seems to occur in houses where they are wood stoves (and ashes are removed to buckets or such) but also in barbecue pits where wood is used to flavor the food.

Hmmm, theres no ash around that I know of.  I suppose it could be from running.  It looks like little circles of a flat scrapes as you described and is in the same spot on each paw.

I did just read in abother section about gold bond powder so I may try that.

Poor Baiwey. Was she walking on hot blacktop recently? Maybe they're blisters?
