Glad you are okay, Jen. I have been in 3 car accidents, none my fault, and the seat belt has saved my life.
My mother was killed in one of those accidents - she was wearing a seat belt. We were broadsided on the driver's side (mom was driving) by a guy going about 50mph on a dirt road. Many people have pointed out over the years that she died in spite of the seat belt, but had she not been wearing it, I don't think the results would have been any different. That was in 1980, long before airbags, and in a Trans Am (low to the ground, not much room inside). I think a lot has to do with where and how you are hit, the speed, etc.
The second accident I was in, I was a front seat passenger in the car. We were stopped for a school bus and a guy who was late for work saw neither the bus nor the fact that we were stopped. The guy who rear-ended us was in a van was going over 60 mph. This was in 1985 - again, no air bags. I had the seat belt on and that's the only thing that prevented me from going through the windshield. Yes, I had whiplash, but was very fortunate.
I lived with a family for a while who not only didn't use seat belts, they didn't even have them available in the van. I remember a couple of times when the driver had to slam on the brakes and I went flying. And the driver thought putting his arm out was going to stop me.
I'd much rather risk it with a seat belt. Worn properly, it helps.
