IT"S SO HOT!!!!!!

One of the people who died in Sacramento was 60 (not really old at all by today's standards) but he was living in an old hotel in downtown Sac that had been converted to low income apartments years ago.  He was up on the 5th. or 6th. floor, and of course, no AC.  It's the sort of place that if you can afford AC, you had a small unit in the window. While it was so hot here, Max just sacked out in front of a fan (or up on our bed under the ceiling fan) and was truly content to just be a couch potato for a week.

Miserable here in Minneapolis, too.  It's only 98 degrees here right now, but with 46% humidity and a 74 degree dew point it feels like every bit of the 108 heat index.

It's just too ridiculous to have the dogs out - we don't have central air and the 3 units are working furiously to make it mostly tolerable.  It's best in our bedroom so that's where we are all hanging!

I think we discovered the answer to changing the weather. It was 110 last Sat. when our AC went out (115 on Sunday) and stayed over 100 degrees thru Wednesday when they could finally get around to replacing the whole unit.  It only cost $1750, but we managed to end the heat spell for all of Northern California  [;)]

Well, it has been about 95 to 97 here, and the heat indexes are up to 106 to 107. And then we have the humidity too, and that's awful. We don't have AC in our house, and today I saw that it was over 90 degrees inside, but I don't know how much more, because the thermostat needle couldn't go any higher than it was! And when it's not any cooler outside, that's just not very fun. The dogs have been so hot  I've been taking them out to the creek every day to swim, and they lay in front of the fan inside, or go down to the basement where it is cooler.

luckily the last week or so, the temps have settled out at our typical 95-100 degrees. the humidity is high, but about the same as most summers. so except for a week or so in june, we have had a typical SC summer.... hot and miserable.

fortunately for less fortunate people, there is an organization in this state that provides AC's and fans to elderly people and low income people.

Right now it's 84 for now and it feels like its in the 90's with all this humidy.  Where also in a heat advisory until 6 tonight because the temperture is to go up and with the humidty their saying it will be 100 to 104 degrees for us.  So that means I have to move Tigger down to the basement again. This has been the worst summer for us and especially for Tigger trying to keep him cool. I wish we had AC but all we have are fans since our stupid house isn't able to handle AC or we end up with no power if we turn on more then three items with AC running. I'm sweating in my chair and the rest of the gang is trying to find a cool spot to wait out the weather.

I'm just dying at home. It's like 105. Hot  and sticky. I can't even clean the house. It's so bad, I havn't been able to eat or sleep. It really does make you sick. I really can't take it anymore.

I hear we're in for it tonight and tomorrow.  Luckily, we have air conditioning in most of the house, and a wading pool outside for the dogs... I don't envy you - I hate the heat.  I did hear that some of the stores are selling the little A/C units (5,000 BTU's) for about $88.

I don't know, to me this people dying thing doesn't make sense.  Maybe it's my mood today or something.  But, aren't there places people can go, like a mall or something like that where it's cooler??  And, why are the cattle out in this at all?? Isn't there a barn or something for shelter?

Unfortunately, it's usually the elders who don't even realize who the President is, or that it's 2006, who never get to the shelters.  So, it's best to check on any older people you know to see that they are ok...
As to the cattle, the barns are usually hotter than the open areas. Their body heat plus no breeze makes for a virtual oven.
Animals will at least try to find the coolest spots.  But, in some heat waves, there's just not enough shelter.

An elderly couple a little south of us who died in the heat wave were found with their heater on - apparently they turned the switch the wrong way.  But again, like Anne said, it's usually the elderly that this type of thing happens to - so if you know or live near elderly people it sure wouldn't hurt to check on them every now and then. OT, but it wasn't that many years ago that an elderly couple in CA got into their hot tub, had a couple of glasses of wine and went to sleep in there.  The water temp was a little higher than it should have been and the actually cooked (slowly simmered) to death.  Heck of a way to go.

just got back from lunch. it is 97 here (1:30 pm edt). usually our high is around 3pm or so, so i guess the temp is going to top out a little higher than 97. according to weather.com the humidity is around 43%, so the actual feel is probably closer to 100-101 right now.

93 here with a heat index of 105...yikes. Looks like pool time tonight!

When our central AC unit went out last weekend my DH went looking for one of these.  Most stores were sold out, but he managed to find one for $99.  The box said it said it was for 100 sf area, and our master bdrm is probably twice that but he put it in the window and that room stayed between 77 (at night) to 84 (mid-afternoon) for 5 days.  It was the best $99 we've spent all year.

After 5PM here and still 99 degrees...the heat index is 106.  The dogs are getting restless, they've been inside for MOST of the day where it's cool but when they go out they wilt pretty quickly.

    It's currently 92, with a heat index of 101.  [&o]

It was 99 earlier, according to the meteorologist.

I can't stand it much longer, even though I have no choice.  The humidity ruins everything; I could easily deal with a 100 degree day, granted the air was nice and arid.  Piece of cake.

We had a really nice day today. It was only 85 to 90 which is almost the coolest weather we have had all month. I think that tomorrow might only be in the low 90s again. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Yesterday was pretty hot. At 5:30 it was still 107' and we had 46% humidity. I can handle the heat, it was the humidity (really not used to it) that made it so bad. I finally gave up, and went outside. (The dogs stayed inside in the AC) I sat in the shade, and kept spraying myself off with the hose. An hour later when I went inside and took a shower, I was feeling much better.
