    Kennel Fire how sad

There was a very bad Boarding Kennel Fire about 1 hour and 45 minutes from me. I had actually met family members who ran it back in the early 1980's. It had passed down thru family to them. We met at a Boarding Kennel Seminar. Sounds like the place was pretty well totaled and several dogs were lost. Some employees were able to get many of the dogs out but not all. They don't yet know the exact numbers but it's been said 20 to 30 were saved of 40 to 50 who were there. Between the wind and the snow the firefighters had a horrible time. The only water was a half mile away and then with all of the deep snow in the driveway and around the building that became an issue as well. So incredibly sad.

Maureen, that's a heartbreaking story.  To think of how scared the dogs must have been is awful.  I hope they were soon unconscious due to smoke inhalation so they didn't suffer any longer than necessary.

When I was young, a boarding kennel close to my hometown had a fire and not all the dogs survived.  I didn't even have a dog then, but I remember the story really shook me.  It stuck with me always, and to this day it's one of the many fears I have about boarding a dog.  The kennel we used for years with Tonka was very small and had a sprinkler system, so that gave me great relief.  But they retired and closed their business.  We've researched other kennels near us, but most are older and/or large, and none have that safety feature.

My heart goes out to all the dog owners who had to be notified with such tragic news.  So very sad.
