New week, new weather.  In Norse mythology (popular in MN) Niflhelm is the coldest of the 9 worlds of the Aesir.  Located to the north, and home of the dead, who walk around cold and bundles up.  We call it Minnesota.  Also know as Hell in other mythologies.  News report from the big cities show new policies on school closing for weather.  Wind chill has to be below -30 F in Minneapolis to close the schools. 6" of snow in 6 hour or 8 in 24 means closing.  Apparently the kids can not zip up their coats as their finger get too stiff at those temps. But they will adapt as the age.

Anyway, I may have to get a few more dogs, as last night was a one dog night, but the polar vortex (a liberal invention according to Rush Limbough, known as" winter" in MN) is in and it may get cold enough to wear gloves and boots soon.  Not too bad yet, only -10 F last night.  I have 10-40 oil in the truck.  I may have to change that if it gets cold.

Sky is spending less time outside now, and seems insistent on getting back in quickly.  I set up a 60 ft zip line for the rat -taking no chances with this one- and he likes to get tangled at the far end, then barks a lot, and gets untangled as you're walking out to him.

We start on-leash Obedience 1 tonight.  No dogs tonight.  I am hoping that with his age, he will learn to focus a bit.  His energy level is so high he can be a pain.  Run him through the deep grass for an hour or two, and he settles down a bit, but hunting is over and frost bite is possible for the next month or two.

This is the start of my first full week of retirement.

Doug, it has turned very cold here in Pa. too expected snow tomorrow morning, I"m staying in. Good luck with the training of your pup, he sure is a beauty.  I know you are going to enjoy your retirement. :)

Congratulations on retirement, Doug! Thanks for rubbing it in to those of us who started our first full week back to work today. Stick out tongue

It's freezing here, too, but I don't have anything witty to add to Doug's post about it.

Very cold here too, and the worst is yet to come. We had lake effect snow squalls much of the day.  Please note that we are a VERY long way from any of the Great Lakes!

I'm still on disability so as good as retired, and NOT enjoying it one bit.  I'm bored senseless, which is probably why I'm doing wierd things like homemade pasta so often, and baking bread three or four days a week.

You guys in the cold probably don't want to hear that it was 50 here today.  If it's any consolation, it was completely overcast and grey, and the dampness in the air makes it feel very chilly.  I wore my scarf and gloves to work.  Doug, you probably would have been fine in shorts and a T-shirt!  Wink

Congrats on your retirement.  Sky will be glad to have you around all day.  Will Mrs. Doug feel the same?  I've heard different opinions from retired friends!

Glenda, do you know if/when you'll be able to return to work?  Boredom does set in; there are only so many projects on your list before you start to get a little stir crazy at home, especially when cooped up indoors in winter.

Still fighting some kind of bug, but can't stay home from work due to deadlines.  My friend arrives from New England on Thursday.  Her first visit here.  I can't be sick!

    good morning!

"Still fighting some kind of bug, but can't stay home from work due to deadlines."

Tracy did you know you were writing my life with that?  *smile*?    Except mine IS allergy based (except when the lungs get this riled up, any bug you breathe in is suddenly totally at home in your respiratory system.

Once upon a time ... when I moved to FL back in '83 I thot "Gee, no more fall allergies!!" -- nope -- little did I realize that in Florida 12 months of the year are allergy months.    There are days when there just isn't enough Benedryl in the world.

No sense in moaning about it -- I haven't perfected the art of "not breathing"  so it's probably not going away soon. LOL

It's cold. Windchill is supposed to be down to -25 tomorrow morning. Then "balmy" for the weekend--in the 20s!  Ronnie ran zoomies in the snow last night--Mozey was trying to see if the rabbits were still around. Not much else--just cold :-)

Tracy, unfortunately, I can't give you a short answer.  I have muscle spasms and severe head aches caused by the muscle spasms in the upper trap.  Also neck pain.  But, WC hasn't yet decided that this is related to the injury (duh???  It's all freaking attached!!) so until I do PT specifically for that issue, I have to take flexeril in order to not wake up all night with what feels like grasshoppers jumping under my skin.  When I take IT, I feel hungover and groggy until late the following day, so not safe to drive.  If I don't take it, I get MAYBE two hours solid sleep, and again, not safe to drive.  Once WC pulls their heads out of their XXXXX and I get PT and eliminate the spasms, I can go back to work.  Hopefully that will happen before my retirement age which is only a tad over 4 years away.

Cold here too.  Our high of 17 happened this morning.  It is now 7, going to - temps tonight with a windchill up to minus 40!  Guess tonight will require the super warm sleepware!

[Bitter cold here in Pa. also I don't mind it except when it comes to taking Ava out in the morning.  She will NOT go unless we go for a walk.  I tried 4 times this morning taking her in the yard, no luck, so I left for the health club at 10 of 8, DH gets up at 8 I left him a note, he said he took her out thinking she would go in the yard, no luck so he took her for a fast walk so she could do her business, I had not taken her because of the snow and ice the day before, I'm afraid of falling again. Tomorrow it will not get above  12 degrees they say with high winds and wind chills below zero so don't know how we will make out tomorrow.  The rest of the day she goes in the yard but expects her morning walks, so who is very very spoiled.  Hope everyone stays warm..Sorry about your terrible pains Glenda hope they find a solution soon!

Strapped Pipers red jacket on Sky and took him to the local park.  One of us was going crazy and needed to run the dog.  A physical need.  He danced in the snow, picked up the back end of the leash and pranced around.  Really didn't want to come home, but I was about two layers short for the weather.  When we got home, he had the zoomies really bad.

Supposed to get above 0 degrees tomorrow, so I may take him the  WMA with lots of trees.  Watch him find the motherload of pheasants, tucked into the valley.  Piper did that two years ago. right after the season closed.

Morning -- everbuddy is cold this morning just about every where..  Glenda, I feel for you .... I was in muscle spasm h$ll for 18 months.  Did they tell you that you can cut the Flexorill in half?  I'm sorry WC is being such a problem - obviously they've never lived with such a thing..

Stay warm folks -- kids in Florida are totally bummed because hundreds of schools everywhere else are closed today but not here!

    Kate *waving* -- take care!

Take care everyone -- shall I pass out hot mocha for everyone?  It's a lovely way to boost your caffeine intake LOL

Cold here. Was 6 when I was outside a couple of hours ago. Got to get out today and get some more bird seed. Awful cold for these little winged critters. Try to stay warm everyone.

It may get interesting watching Evas' first few steps in boots.  Tried that with Piper a couple of times.  She would rather bite the ice and snow lumps off.

Warming day-up to 12F.  Which brings snow and wind.  Only a few inches of snow, but the wind makes for ground blizzards.  I drove in one once at night.  I could see the stars, I could see the telephone poles.  I could not see the road.  Kind of like driving by braille.  And slow.

Kind of house bound today.  Dog is going nuts.  I decided to wind up the bread machine.  Wife is making beef stew.   May have to open a bottle of wine.

The first Obedience class was called off because of weather.  We do live on the edge of the American tundra and wind and lite snow just don't mix well.  So glad we put new windows on the house over the last few years.

It has just recently struggled up to 5 degrees here.

Got up, used the bathroom and flushed.  Nothing happened.  I left the boiler and the pellet stove going all night, opened every single cold water faucet in the house, and still the water main froze.  Of course getting it thawed just had to be a huge challenge!  Took DS and went to fill the propane tank since he wanted to use the torch.  But, he wasn't getting enough heat out of the torch so out again.....torch was fine, guy said the tank was probably cold.  Took about an hour but he finally got the darned thing thawed.  DS always has an easier way to do things that usually end up being anything but.  Sigh!  The main is wrapped AND has heat tape on it.  Guess tonight I'll leave a space heater on it as well.

I've been repeatedly refilling the bird feeders today...poor little guys.  I also put out little metal bowls of food for the squirrels.  Just way too cold for any critter to have to forage for food.

Hmmmm, speaking of food, last nights chilling would likely hit the spot about now!
