Glenda, I'm glad to hear your mother's procedure went well. It's always a worry when people of very advanced ages have to go under any kind of anesthesia.
Callie, good news that you're back at work. I hope things have stabilized for good for you now. You've had to deal with too much!
When I got to our neighborhood after work yesterday, I was stunned. Nearly every yard had a tree with several limbs broken off (or worse). I got to our house to find a front yard that looked like a tornado or something had blown through. A huge pear tree was in pieces, a crepe myrtle was split to the ground in 3 places, and our gorgeous coral bark maple was broken at about a foot above the ground. The side and backyards didn't fare much better -- another huge pear tree split apart, another crepe myrtle, and a flowering currant -- all a wreck.
Our street sits just a few hundred feet above the main part of town, but that must've been enough to keep the ice solid all day, and the weight of it, along with plenty of leaves still on everything, was too much. We had no power for a while last night (dinner was on the grille), and off again for a couple hours this morning. Still too much ice to try clean up the mess, so we'll see what we can do this weekend.
I am grateful that nothing damaged our house (with Ruby inside!), but I'm so sad about the loss of so many major focal parts of our tiny yard. The expense of clearing it all away will be bad enough, but if we want to replace anything, that'll be even more. And it'll be another 10+ years before anything will mature to that level. I know -- first world problem -- but I'm so bummed.
Hope everyone is staying warm wherever you are -- good time to snuggle with our dogs with some tea or cocoa and a good book!
